Adding to what was earlier mentioned my recommendation would be

a) Give one mock test (GMAT prep software) without any prep whatsoever.
b) Start preparing in different sections.
c) Maybe after a month of preparation start giving MGMAT mock tests with a gap of 7-10 days each.
d) By the time you finish these tests, you will be done with 2 months of prep.
e) After giving the first 3 MGMAT tests if you feel that you need more prep, increase the gap of test to around 2 weeks.
f) Finally give the second mock test (GMAT prep software) few days before the actual GMAT date.

You can tweak the above as per your choice.

The sooner the better cos you don't want to mix both your app effort & GMAT effort and risk not concentrating on both There is no best time (date/month wise) to give GMAT. You should GMAT when your are done with your prep and are scoring well in your mocks. Also give atleast a month before the actual deadline. Just in case you want to give a second shot (you can re-apply with atleast a month's gap) you can do so before the deadline closes.
