I have 5+ experience in a reputed consultancy firm. Do I stand a chance to get a call from IIT K ?

I knw i will receive lot of groans abt this,.......but actuallt i am bound to post this....here is comes...
I get really frustrated by the seniors at IIT when they show such a "nice" picture of IIT....and i have faced it my self ... placement senerio which wasn't good atall and summers are always in doldrums at the lower iits.....there are least no of visitng faculty .... avg packages are not the same they show at their website...this thing is really pathetic.. :-x:-x:-x

secondly be prepared that u will always be looked down at iit....it is supposed to be college for B.tech...same things we did to Mtech and MCA ppl at our college:rockedov:...lot of clarifiction awill coem on this....but thats the realty....

There are many things that many people say:

1) Some one told me that 80% of seats in one of the so called topmost "series" of Bschools are filled up under the table with donations and so on...

2) Another thing I heard abt one of the so-called top B school clubbing up the figures of multiple placements of a candidate to arrive at his salary and then calculate avg placement figure for the batch..

3) I've also heard about some top pvt B school inflating its figure by around 2 lac by virtue of CTC phenomenon..

I'v also heard about Bschools getting their students placed in companies which never stepped on their campus
and the companies themselves are unaware of such "placements"

But if I put them all here, PG guys would ban me for blabbering without basis and without proof. As a future manager you need to look beyond that which is just visible or that which is just being potrayed.. This includes gossips and tea-talk

As for IIT, its a governmental institute and has no motivation to lie, cheat and deciet. It does not earn from your fees.

Anyways thanks for your point of view and you are free to apply or not apply. This thread is meant only for helping applicants and not raising controversies or endless arguments

it clears my doubts..actually the coaching institutes create the confusion by telling that an mba from iit is not good..it is famous for their btech etc etc..

that is why i thought why not to ask from u people itself...

Don't talk about coaching classes.. I know how and what all of them are... IIT's do not pay for any advertisement or putting posters in such coaching classes or their material.

Why you should apply to IITK if you intend to pursue an MBA -

Usually the factors that business aspirants generally consider while applying to any B-school or MBA pogram are:

Institute's global reputation
Quality of faculty, their qualification, experience and global recognition
Courses taught
Student profile
Placements

1) Brand Image - Globally an IIT is more well known than any other educational institute in India generally

2)Faculty would be the best that you would possibly get in any Institute in India -

At IITK we have Proffs who could earn 10 times more in corporate sector or shifting to other foreign B-schools than what they are earning at IITK. They prefer to be at IITK because they love the campus culture, freedom to conduct research and innovation rather than in a corporate board room or (which they find boring)

Almost all faculty are PHD's from IIMA, IIMB, IIMC and top global B-schools along with years of experience and international recognitions. They provide consulting services to various MNC's and are bigshots in their field of interest.

3)Infrastructure - Well whatever I say about this would be insufficient and you would appreciate only if you visit the campus just once.

AC lecture halls, 24 hour highspeed LAN and wireless internet, 5-star like hostels (just see my Hall 7 at IITK on google images), single occupancy rooms, multiple facilites for all possible sports, swimming, gym,etc.
We have one of the best libraries of the country..
There are classes to learn Japanese, German, French and other global languages free of cost

4) Hobbies and overall personality development -
There are around 40 hobby clubs who have professional guides for all kinds of activities like dance, music, singing, writing, poetry, languages, literature, astronomy,photography, adventure sports, science and technology...and so on (I don't even remember)... Gliding club where you would get to fly ... Festivals like Antaragni, Events like Megabucks, Udghosh with annual budget of more than 1 crore or so..

There are parties on various occasions with DJ disco and snacks and all by IITK gymkhana.. All free of cost to you..

5) Guest lectures and corporate Interaction takes place almost every week with one or the other big shot coming to campus from varied fields and industries.. You get the advantage of numbers here.. BTech's, MTechs, PHD's, Proffs, RA's and MBA's as well - The contacts are unlimited and so is the reach of the alumni

6) A large community - IITK has one of the most intelligent brains of the country. You benefit from their brains, enthusiasm and initiative as well. This is not just an isolate institute with just 200-300 people pursuign some degree. Its a whole world of possibilities.

Batch profile - IITK 2010 MBA batch has only 15% of students below 1 year of work ex (freshers should not worry - I myself am one :angel:).. 80-90% are from top colleges like IIT's, DCE, NSIT and top NIT's.

What else do you want.. Name it and we have it.. I am able to mention only a few aspects of my first hand glimpse of IITK and donot find time to write comprehensively.. There are so many other facilites and possibilities that even I am not aware of - you cannot expect this in an institution which has only 200-300 ppl pursuing a degree.. This is a centre of innovation and excellence and not just any other educational institution

And an IIT would never brag about all this.. Because its mission is to produce future leaders, visionaries who would add to the intellectual pool of India and it is not an educational institute which earns money out of its fees and views education as a business or industry.. Hence it would never waste money on various modes of bragging and advertisement or paying news channels for conducting various kinds of programs to establish an image.

Well friend... Same question can be asked of any other MBA institute of the globe.. And the answer would depend on the person asking the question and his expectations..

If you think IIT's are too inferior for you, you might want to apply to Harvard, Stanford..

what r my chances of getting a call ? Also..

1.) I am unable to find iit-R application form on their website..can someone put up the direct link .
2.) Can i speed post the application ? Does it require any other enclosure barring the D.D. ?

You can try your luck, but the chances of getting a call from IITK are really very very less if you are General Category student.

I think it would be too difficult to get a call from IITR, but still you should confirm with them first.. Try NIT Calicut if you wish as it is also accepting JMET score this year.

You can get calls from IIT Kanpur, IIT Kgp, IIT R and IITM

Try your best shot to get into MBA this year... Its a good time for study as when you come out the recession will be over... Also its generally observed that people with more than 3 years work ex develop several constraints while pursuing their MBA and so you are in a right position..

I have a call from IIFT, and am expecting 2-3 more calls (MDI,IMT,NITIE) at least from CAT....if not more (117-122 score)...i have already decided to apply for IITb and IITd...what about IIT-kgp?...should i also keep it in my radar?....looking for info and advice that will help me decide

You may apply for IIT Kanpur and IIT Kgp

Here in IITK we have many people who have given interviews in IIMs, FMS, XLRI etc and they are quite happy with their decision to join IITK.. I assure you once you reach the campus of IITK do give your interviews you will be pleased with your decision..

I'm an OBC candidate but while applying i filled it in general category.(NON Creamy thing came ).

I have 19 months experience in IT sector.

Which IIT's should i apply?Will OBC certificate be of any help now?

You should apply as this time OBC quota has increased and is also taken into consideration while giving the calls unlike last year.

However we will confirm if you can still be considered under the OBC quota and tell you.. However you mention it in your IITK application form.

You should apply. At your rank and profile, I would not suggest you to take a risk of not applying.

last time for iit kgp it was around 1000, for kanpur i think
it was around 2000. not sure about kanpur though.

For Kanpur it was within 1600.. With a rank of 1505 you should definitely not take this risk of not applying to IIT Kanpur.

We are not questioning the credibility based on any institute's predictions.
We agree that cut off went very high. But even after that why there are differences in marks and corresponding ranks. If there had been one or two cases everybody would have been happy with that but I have read numerous posts about it and also heard the same from many of my friends.
Why is it that person getting close to 80 marks getting rank < 100
and person with marks 85 around 400 ranks ?
Person with 77 and 71 getting same rank 1343 (me being one)
Person with 67 marks having rank 0f 2100 and many guys with 76+ for sure didnt even qualify inspite of getting higher marks in every sections.

and why this year IITs havnt disclosed the marks unlike last year??
I am sure the only answer to this is "These things are decided by JMET committee".
but again even if there were few ambiguous questions present but even marks differences of more than that are giving unreasonable results.

If the similar kind of things are happening with so many guys ofcourse these types of questions will arise whether somebody agree or not.
