There is no need to study much before the course starts. You will get to study sufficient once it does:) You will have only basic courses in your 1st sem like marketing, eonomics, org. mgmt, quantitative methods. If you want to study, have a look through harold koontz's management book. It will give you a complete picture and put all the subjects in perspective. ATB!

In what way is the room alotment in our hands. I mean whether is it getting preferred room partner of getting it single or double.

Some more queries:

1) Does quality of food vary between different hostels?

2) Someone said that the hostels have 3 meals a day. So after lunch we r getting dinner. Do we get some evening snack or we will have to manage that on our own.

3)For the swimming pool , will i get an instructor if i want to learn swimming?

4) What are the usual class timings?

5) Which specialization at IIT D will u rate the best (your opinion) -> finance, marketing, operation etc.

The dean office will only allocate hostels, not rooms.
Once you reach your hostel, the hostel caretaker will show you all the vacant rooms and you can choose the one you want.
Quality of food is almost consistent, not much of a difference here.
There are evening snacks in every hostel and this does vary from hostel to hostel.
Swimming pool has instructors but there main responsibility is to act like lifeguards, so wont be able to teach you much. Although, most of us learn from fellow students and that is a great way to make friends and learn to swim.
Usual class timings is 8 to 5 with sufficient breaks in between.
Finance, marketing and IT are the most coveted specializations here. This year, HR and operations also saw an upswing with many students going for jobs in these areas. If you are talking from job perspective, you will get an entire year to decide where you want to be. Good luck..

hii seniors i want to know what is the daily routine of classes? Is hostal is necessary for localities too? is evening classes r also held in DMS.

Hostel is not compulsory but most of the localites do take it. Class timings can vary and you can't rule out evenings( some profs love to teach). Usually, they should be around 8 to 5. Hostel is more of a convenience than necessity but once you are here in IIT, there are so many things you will see and want to do, i will suggest taking a hostel.

I have got thru DLM program of IIT D 2008-10. I have a few querries.


1) What was the highest package bagged by the fresher in the class of 2008 (i am a fresher). If u dont know the exact data then tell the highest amongst the ones u know.

2) What do companies consider for summer internship b coz even the full first year is not over by the time summer placements start. Will being a fresher be a disadvantage there?

3) Have read in a post about too much of guitar playing in the hostel resulting in many "broken strings". Does IIT Delhi have some optional music training facility available for interested people? or we wil have to manage on our own?

I can't disclose the exact figures here but i'm a fresher and all of us have got very good packages and profiles. For summers, this won't be a factor at all. I got through the 1st company i sat for and this is true for most of the freshers. Companies prefer freshers in many cases and are looking for your enthusiasm and willingness to learn. So no worries there
and for the guitar part, there is a music room in every hostel where you get professionals coming in to teach you. Join the music club and so many countless others if you want to go a step beyond. ATB!

he is waitlisted @ 44 for IITD , could anyone please throw some light on the prospects of the WL being cleared and what was the last waiting list to be confirmed last year

This is the usual range of WL clearance. Last to last year, WL 45 was the last one. Last year, it was around 100 due to obc thing. That is not a very good indicator though. Picture becomes much clearer once 1st WL is out. So the best thing is to wait and watch till then.

I am WL 11, however i am told there are fair chances of my converting the call, and i plan to join if it does...i would like to know if there are bulk laptop deals at the start of the session, and if there is, what brand do ppl generally buy and how much discount (%age) can we get?
I am planning to buy a lappy but wud wait if the discount if a modest sum

Bulk laptop deals are negotiated by students themselves and you can start the process once you all get to know each other through yahoogroups and all. People in our batch got very generous discounts on HP. I will suggest waiting for some time and buying it in bulk.

Business suits are required only for special occasions. You won't need them very much. Single/Shared room initially depends on the hostel you get. However, in 2nd year, its always a single room.

A lot of people who are here were getting handsome salaries like you have mentioned. Freshers are getting all sorts of options in their profiles and that should be the judging criteria than mere package. It is hovering around 10 for current batch. Also, when you consider the usual increase that we are getting, you can calculate yours in 2 years from now.

This issue about mobility and stuff without bike has been raised before, though I'm yet to meet a single person who has rued this fact about vehicle restriction. Campus is the perfect place for long walks and moreover the things here keep students busy enough to do without life's little luxuries. And everyone gets so involved in life within IIT, you don't miss anything else much. However, the best way to learn this truth is by experiencing it.

Taking another step away from the ordinary, we had a lecture by Swami Bodhananda. Swami Bodhananda is highly respected in America and India as an accomplished teacher of Vedanta and meditation and is the Spiritual Founder and Director of 12 organizations and ashrams under the umbrella of the Sambodh Foundation. He delivered amazing insights into strategy based on ancient texts such as chanakyaniti. This was coupled with a discourse on values and ethics. This interaction was a very different experience for students as opposed to the usual industry guest lectures we have regularly. This also gave us a totally different perspective of things which is something that is strongly encouraged at DMS; thinking differently.
