I feel that a combination of Permanent faculty and Visiting faculty reflects the academic health. I'll take your words abt Permanent faculty of MDI, but when it comes to Visiting faculty I beg to differ. Again it boils downs to availability - in big city Mumbai with innumerable and famous colleges, corporates and financial hub or elsewhere

why do i get the feel that it is better to borrow faculty than to have them onboard?
all i said was that the higher faculty strength was indicative. extension of your logic would mean that if spj was located at nariman point they shouldnt have permanent faculty at all????

Okie by industry interaction I mean
1. Big shots from industry comming to campus and sharing their view
2. Students going to these companies for short term live project.
If we both agree on this, then tell me where on the earth is MORE INDUSTRY and MORE BIGSHOTS than mumbai. Again Mumbai Darshan starts

This case I feel MDI definitely scores. But again Mumbai factor comes into play :smile:.

Yeps! I agree exchange programs are higher, infact higher than few IIMs. I'm not sure about the learning part but yes you need to have deep pocket to avail this luxury - somewhere between 1 -3 L. Frankly speaking when most of us are studying by taking education loan, I somehow find it not very appealing. Again your call.

Finally! u appreciated anything of SPJ. Believe me it counts a lot when u go for summers or even when u switch jobs. Networking is everything in MBA. Check out ITC - filled with IIMC or ICICI - filled with IIMA or Network of JBIMS finance people in Mumbai.

here's my 2 cents worth

unfrtunately, i did not geta call from spj. but i do have a call from mdi. even if i had got both calls, i think i would have still bet on mdi.

undoubtedly both insti's are quite close, but i would stil focus on certain things.

to me some of the most important criteria is:

1> faculty: nothing could matter more than this, coz this is what ur here for. i feel that mdi scores coz it has one of the highest permanent faculty strengths in india. nd the faculty is definitely good.

2>industry interaction: this is what makes things practical. mdi is again slightly better (its one thing they've been trumpeting about for years).

3>location : here both are even-stevens. there are corporates in near equal numbers in both delhi and mumbai. so this shouldnt matter.

4>class profile & placements: spj is heavily loaded in favour of guys with work-ex. but as far as i know, this years mdi batch also has an increased proportion of workex guys(if pg discussions are any indicators). again, if with workex guys in spj, the sals are compareable with mdi then mdi should score (not sure of sals, i still need to dig deeper on this one).

5> infrastructure : both seem to be somewhat equal

6> fees: both equal (nearly)

7> exchange programes : i think mdi has an edge here. higher number students made it abroad i think.

8> board members: mdi definitely has an edge here

9> alumini base: sp jain is definitely way ahead of mdi on this count. on of the best alumini networks in the tier 2 schools.

10> growth prospects : personally i feel that mdi has beter chances


anyways, all this turns out to be rubbish in the end. we all take the school that we have a gut feel for. this is mine. hope ur gut feel turns out good for u all

i agree with bingo that most insti's dont come out clearly with sal calculations. to have expected the mdi guys to stand up for their insti by getting info which they usually would not have access to and/or would not be allowed to reveal was dumb. its a different thing that they did come out with it.

from my side, if u think the insti is fudging, drop it. dont apply. if want a discussion, get the data, put it on the board along with ur concerns, lets talk. if u feel ur altruism is on a high, go file a pil. dont flame and disuse a lovely forum.

some background info:
well manipal was a little diff. it was less hotter than last year(if thats possible). anyways for those yet to go there, it's best if you book rooms in advance. the whole place is almost full. most hotels give non-ac double rooms for 250 approx. i stayed in hotel bhavani. place is clean and quite ok. warning:most hotels are on 24 hr checkout sobe careful when you intimate the checkout. some general info:
best restaurant in town:dollops at tiger circle.
best bar: down town(gfloor hotel bhavani).
some 4 movie halls are there.
distance of tapmi from most hotels: 1 km
canteen at tapmi also serves meals for 20 bucks (unlimited rotis and rice)

my view of tapmi:
when i attended the presentation last year, there was a sense of apprehension on the faces of all faculty. prob due to the totally rehauled course module. this year it seems they are more confident. the new campus has not yet been completed so the hostel is the same one,tired looking, but spartan and clean. all the classes are held in the academic block which is sufficient but somehow is not my idea of how a bschool should look.the course looks rigorous, and quite exciting. placements are flying this year. the entire current batch got placed in one day compared the traditional fortnight it used to take.marketing guys ended up getting better sals(cannot corroborate. this came from a tapmi senior). teachers are all the same. no great additions.

the process:
by now everyone will have some idea of the process. i would like to add that try not to make a fishmarket. the panel are sick of it and are willing to throw out the entire group if it happens. another point is that the panel will contain one senior industry person and/or a tapmi aluminus. so dont take them all to be acadamecians.

the case study:
well my case was on one mr. gurminder, a 52 yr old graduate who owned a chain of petrol pumps on the delhi-gurgaon. he is a principled man and wants to move with the times. having enuf space in petrol pumps, he plans to retail some products. he does a survey among 100 customers and his findings are tabulated. among 7 categories alcohol gets the highest rating(8.5), three others get the same rating(7), cold storage items, consumer products, and soft drinks. he decides to retail three highest rated products. the question is what should mr gurminder do?

10 mins to read, 20 to discuss. decent discussion. panel interrupted once though. this was followed by a 200 word summary in 10 mins.

extempore:
most topics have already been given. my topics were
1 noise pollution in cities.
2 if ignorance is bliss, why arent more people happy
3 publicity is a social disease

i spoke on the 2nd one. time given: 3 min to prepare, 3 to speak.

panel interview
this year the panels seem to be more interested in the candidtes focus. why mba, why what is the oportunity cost, how do you plan to recover, etc.
avg length:15 mins

it was mostly the regular questions

do a cost benifit analysis of doing mba

the essay:
the heading went something like "based on your life-experiences what were your career choices(list them) and how will mba help you in ur chosen career option". 350 words max. 20 mins.

directors interview
four of tapmi's senior most faculty were there. director, prof balasubramanian, prof vasudev, cant remeber the last one's name. avg length:5 mins.
it seemed like this was only a confirmation stage. dont know how it helps. anyways the questions were quite regular ones

if ur lucky u'll finish in one day. if not, u r gonna have to stay over for 2 days (mostly for the 5 min diro intervew).


anyways, thats my experience at tapmi. results they say could be out in first week of march. no of approx seats is 120-130. well tahats it.

for starters i seem to have lost my last years case so sorry.

looking a the scene, i guess my last years experience could also be useful ( i think there was a tapmi gd/pi thread last year too. i f some one can find it pls post.) so here goes tapmi 2004

case described a situation where a manager had to deal with maintainence of taxi's in a taxi company. there were about 14 people if remeber correctly. it was a fishmarket for 20 mins. we discussed the various factors which could have contributed like drivers, manger, comapany policies etc. solutions were generic, repeatitive and yet debated (dont knw how we managed that ).

well in extempore u r given three topics. usually one is a proverb/saying, one could be current affairs topic, and one creative. in the give time to think try to pik the one where you can show your maturity (hah like thats possible ). i chse "tough times never last but tough people do". was decent in my attempt ( the girl next to me chose cat v/s dogs and spoke on how cats say meow whereas dogs say bow-wow ).

next road block: panel interview. three members, p1, p2, p3. p2 was from communication/litterature background. m: me

p1: what is the difference b/w elctrical and electronics?
m: explained connotation difference.
p1: what is that? (pointed to a switch board)
m: told him.
p1: is it electrical or tronics
