It doesn't hold less value but would be more helpful to take later as some of the skills you would gain while preparing would help while you are writing your essays for the schools.

I am new to this forum n dont know whether this is the right thread to be posting my doubt. so please excuse me if its not. I am a final year engineering student graduating in june 2011. i am very interested in doing an MBA from abroad. I did a little bit of prep for CAT2010 but managed only 98%ile and that too with a disastrous quant score. i am planning to write the GMAT smtime before july.
My doubt is whether it is advisable to take the GMAT now. i feel at this point of time i can devote more time to my prep and manage a decent score. but i only plan on applying to any b-schools after atleast 3 years of work ex. Also i am aiming for top 20 b-schools. is it true that GMAT scores that are 3-4 years old hold less significance in the eyes of the adcoms????
as for my profile: doing engineering in ECE from a decent college in north india with 7.33/10.

Great GMAT score and GPA. Having no work-experience for an international candidate is not recommended in the US B-Schools. You can surely try ISB and other Indian B-schools if you want to go for an MBA right away after graduation or if you want to go for a US B-School, I would recommend getting 2-3 years of work experience before you apply.

Your GMAT is on the lower side. Tough having backlogs is not good but it won't be the deciding factor. You need to have stellar recos from work, have great leadership stories in your essays and have a good resume. That would give you a good shot at some very good B-Schools.

Are you planning to apply this for the class of 2013 or 2014? R3 would definitely be very very tough for international candidates.

R3 would be the toughest in these schools. Is it possible for you to wait and apply next year with a good GMAT score? That would give you ample time to work on your essays, recos and resume. I would say that you should surely think about it.

You have good work experience. Though the GMAT is on the lower side but that shouldn't prevent you from applying to any of the schools.

All of the schools you named are good and you surely would stand a chance if you write good essays, have a good resume and get good recos.

Job prospects in Europe in general are not as great as they are in the US now. European firms are still cutting down on workforce.

Regarding the cost of B-schools in US, almost all of them have same cost but the schools ranked lower offer good scholarships. Though almost every top B-school has loan programs for international students and once you have a job in the US, its not difficult to pay that loan back.

And finally if you are more interested in the 1 year programs, there are good schools in the US with 1 year programs.

i was focused on MBA from europe bec of 1 yr and less expensive than U.S. but as was going to this thread and found job prospects may be bleak in U.K. after MBA. So found some colleges in other euroean countries

MBS germany
warsaw school of economics
euorpean business schol

Please tell whether for bocconi and MBS, do i stand good chances for this GMAT score...

Also i was searchin U.S. colleges but found them on expensive side.. so i would aprreciate a lot if someone could mention some of the less expensive and decent colleges in U.S.

Completely agree with Bhavya. Essays, Resume and Recos form more than 75% of your application. And looking at your profile, you definitely have a good shot at top 15 B-schools. All the Best!

Overall a decent profile. With a 700+ GMAT you can definitely make it to top 15 schools. Make sure you have some good leadership experience strories for your essays/resume/recos. Your success will depend on how well you craft your essays etc.

CFA will help if your career goal is to move to finance post MBA.

Hey all u guys
I got an admit to schulich :)

recieved their email few days ago......

okay but im in a bit of dilemma here.....
see ive got admit into Olin university too.... and both schulich and Olin hardly have any diff in their ranks...

The one main disadvantage , as ive researched about schulich , is the placements.

The placement success rank for Olin is 43 whereas for Schulich its 87... wtf???

Does schulich have so little placements???
I mean i know as far as value for money is concerned , schulich is the better option. Olin is way too expensive (62K for 1st year and 70k for 2nd year)....

But guys , anybody, please share some light on the placement record of schulich..... I mean , I for one, am honestly thinking of getting a job abroad...
So its a big risk for me.

It's great that you have all be accepted to CEIBS but this result highlights how confusing the CEIBS admissions process is that my friend, who scored a 99th percentile GMAT score and a 6.0 AWA, and who speaks Mandarin and can write and read both traditional and simplified script, was placed on the waiting list. My friend is also fluent in several other related Asian languages but it looks like his work experience wasn't good enough to get him in. But these results make me ponder why CEIBS keeps accepting so many foreign students who have no background in Chinese language, history, and culture. Maybe they are trying to attone for Mao's great quote in which he stated that if the Chinese populace marched up the Himalayas and pulled down their pants to pee then India would be washed away into the ocean. This quote summarizes the bilateral relationship pretty well. But this shouldn't prevent you from having fun with the chinky babes that abound at CEIBS.
