juss had my PMIR interview at xlri jamshedpur.
reached the centre gud 1 hr before. only 2ppl were thr. signed the sheet and waited patiently for my turn. was told that most of the int was gettin over in 7-10min.
well my turn came. entered the room. there were 3 persons in the panel. don't recognize neone of them. wil hv to chk out with the prospectus. i would address them as P1 ,P2 & P3. and myself as M.
M : may i come in sirs.
P1: do come in. hv your seat.
M : thankyou sir.(kept my file on my lap...no one asked for it)
P2: tell us about youself ( lookin at the print outs of the form ..)
M: told them regardin my goal (start an independent enterprise 12-15 yrs dwn the line) n educational bckground.
P1: well you would need alot of money to do that.
M: yes sir. its my long term goal. By that time i would gain enough experience that would giv me the confidence to go ahead with my plans.
P3: (spoke for the first time .. all the while he was observin me ..i guess) well you did your b.tech frm one of the best colleges in mining engg...then you switched to s/w (read infy) now xlri, pmir....so wats nxt.
M: xlri would be the final one.i'm sure 'bout that.
P1: laughin... wat else do you want in life yaar. you are frm a gud college, workin in a gud company, must be involved in some international projects, you hv a gud profile..why do you want to leave s/w & do pmir.
M: sir i never said i'm leavin s/w or for that i hv left mining. i can always go bck to these once i'm done with my formal pmir education. basically i want to serve the organisation in a different capacity.
P1: ok..suppose you bck to infy as an HR manager..wat would you do to bring down the attrition rate.
M: i would look into the facilities and.. (he the interrupted)
P1: kya baat kar rahe ho yaar. infy has wonderful facilities. you ppl sit in the ac rooms whole day long .still you talk 'bout facilities.Hv you been to tata steel here..you will sweat whole day. now tell me wat would you do..
M: spoke at length..'bout ppl gettin trng in one stream n thrown into projects witha a diff stream...n all that stuff.
P3: ok. why did you join s/w..in the first place.
M: sir... the yr i passed out none of the mng cos. came to our campus..in fact our entire bathch is in s/w today..n besides there's not enough room in mng industry.
P3: i don't agree.. i think it is one of the most prospective sectors today (is it so??????).
M: sir i couldn't help if cos don't come. besides s/w is the place where you find most of the jobs. sir..my basic idea was to get into an organisation n hv a hands on exp of the workin of an organisation.
P1: don't you think you are wasting your mng degree frm such a gud college (kept repeatin the same qn.
M: i don't think so sir. in fact at this point of time i would like to recall wat the GM HRM of IREL said wen i went thr for my summer trng in 2nd yr. he said ..we are in desperate need of guyz who are mng enggrs hving a formal degree in HR mgmt. kept makin my point that in mng industry the most imp. problem is labour related. so a pmir degree would really help in that regard.
P1: ok .. talkin 'bout infy now..it is not necessary that after mba you perform better than a non mba..a non mba can be more produtive that you after your mba ..so in that case you would be wasting you mba degree as well... wat do you say.
M: sir..as far as comparing their performance is concerned ...there domain areas are diff. a non mba would definetely b better in a technical. n as far as mba is concerned ..he would contribute in a diff capacity. we can't really compare them.
all the while P2 kept mum observing me. i guess he asked 1 or 2 qn ...i don't remember.
P3: i'm not an expert on mng..but tell me how do you decide wen to go for opencast n wen to go for u/g metods..
M: (told 'bout mine economics )
P3: wat type of mines are more in india..oc or u/g.
M: told
P3: talking 'bout mng sector..recently the sterlite grp now vedanta grp were hv some labour related issues. as an HR manager wat would you hv done...
M: ( i was nt aware of the problem.. but gave a general answer)
P3: ok ... wat do you think 'bout indian economy.. if i ask to explain the present scenario as a layman...
M : (sigh of relief).. (atlast sth diff.) blah..blah..blah..
P3: ok ..which sectors do you think were held responsible for the pullin the economy down..
M: (i waited for a moment) sir i think its the infrastructure sector(pata nahi kyon bola main).. (n said sth i don't remember)
P3: wat do you think 'bout the agriculture sectors.
M: (i realised my mistake) spoke 'bout agri sector.. n spelt out some figures. ( he looked satisfied)
P3 : hav you heard 'bout MAT.
M: yes sir.. it minimum alternate tax... it has been raised in this budget.
P3: (lookin satisfied) ok ...you may go
P1 n P2 : noddin their heads in affirmation.
M: Thankyou sirs. it was a pleasure meeting you.
so that was how it went.
i think it was ok. i didn't come under stress at ne poit of time. i was very patient with my answers.
