A very interesting thread indeed...first some first hand info....
my first job was with a telecom embedded product company, high tech technology firm.
Company 1
Employees -550
Total HR employees: 4 (one VP , 2 senior executives, 1 junior executive)
I happened to see salary slips of all of them

(don't ask me how, i used my computer skillls to exploit a loophole in the intranet of the cmpny, i seriously regret it as it's a classic non-ethical thing to do..but i was really interested in knowing wat dese people earn)
2 senior executives and one junior executive were earning less than me:shock:(i had 1+ year of experience,BTech computer science with 20% appraised salary over wat i was offered at the campus)...,
these people were MBA-HR from unheard cllgs with 8+ yrs in the same company:dontgeti:......VP was earning huge, his earnings were only lower than CEO,CFO, VP-ENgg and few other people.
Company 2
Employees -400+
HR - One Senior Director, One senior manager , 2 staffing specialists, 3 contracted employees.company profile same as the first one, i didn't try to break into intranet but i know that apart from top two designations , oder people are earning lesser again .
Now, please don't rush to conclusions here, my post so far is only about giving some first hand info......my points mite be criticised on two grounds
1. I talked of only technology comapnies where HR's role is supposedly most insignificant.
2. 2 is not a sample size worth deriving any conclusions from.
My two cents on this is that any good earning HR (if u want to earn comparable to MARK,FIN people) will be one for atleast 100 professionals for other fields.
That is,
1.for an IB, commercial bank etc if they hire 50 fin proff, 50 marketing proff for various profiles , they will hire
1 HR person to take care of dem.
2. FMCG, consulting will hire maybe
1.5 HR proffessionals for every 50 marketing proffessionals.
3. Technology firms will hire 1 HR for 150 engineers
I hope everybody is getting where this low pay , ultimate thankless part of the HR job comes from .
If you want to earn decent u have to do exceptionally well, if u as a HR professional is given good compensation, 100 of your colleagues will be given same compensation in fin/mkts profiles.
If intake of total MBA's in a year is say 1000, there will hardly be 10 HR's in there (pleasse mind that these 10 HR's will be earning equal/greater than there fin/mktg counterparts), for routine HR jobs , there will be lot more vacancies but i am sure nobody reading this thread wud lik to think of doing that job(they get arnd 10-25K per month and job profile is better left unsaid)
So, i hope i have driven my first point across,
HR is no less imp. than anything else but since it is the cost center of the organisations and the nature of the job is such that HR professionals will always be required in miniscule numbers as compared to fin/mktg or even ops profiles, the importance of HR is always underestimated
Also, it is a well established fact that once any organisation runs into losses , HR people are the first ones to be laid off and HR people are hired only when organisation is mature enuff, it has enuff cash flows etc etc, there is no concept of HR in a startup..... that maybe indicates that it is considered the most redundant department without which any organisation can function if not grow and develop.
Now, these were only my thoughts/doubts ..plss don't get offended.
Another thing is that I have always been interested in HR mainly because of
1. I feel I am gifted enuff to read and judge people better than most
2. I can understand people
3. I have good verbal skills.
4. I see myself as a motivational speaker somewhere down the line
5. I think HR requires least amount of brains and reasoning and it will be peaceful as far as using ur mental faculties is concerned( i know it's sad but i am one of those chill types, i don't want much load at any point in my carreer

)
My mind went off from HR not beacuse i know for a fact that i have to be simply exceptionally performing and top of the line in HR to be paid decently but beacuse of the way techology people(specially engg) treat HR. I mean i shudn't be using those words here but almost all my colleagues have very bad things to say,,,, wen someone lags behind in his or her work , they say ,,apply in HR -- u will excel.......or somethin lik "inhe kaam hi kya hai, muft ki kahte hain ye log"" ( i strictly do not endorse these views)
Please don't misunderstand me but i thot that amidst such good discussion people shud know the real opinions that atleast technology firm employees have about HR as a profession. and this is what puts me off.....i know i can be labelled as somebody whose decisions are based on oders but still with that kind of image and respect among people in your organisation ,i can't think of becoming an HR professional.....
I sincerely hope and pray that people here help me in turning arnd my thots and gimme courage to pursue wat i lik
