heard a question abt Ops Management...
so here is an answer posted by me last year... any other queries is most welcome....
1.What does operations management mean ?
Operations Management (OM) is a specialized and emerging body of knowledge that facilitates the process of value delivery by improving productivity, quality, cost and supply chain cycle times and providing a broad array of high quality products and services.
or
"the field of study that focuses on the effective planning, scheduling, use, and control of a manufacturing or service organization through the study of concepts from design engineering, industrial engineering, management information systems, quality management, production management, inventory management, accounting, and other functions as they affect the organization"
As people think, operations is not restricted to one particular domain or function. Its is there in every function and activity that is happening in an organization.Be it the manufacturing, retail or services sectors such as IT, finance, logistics, transportation, health care or public utility or educational, the service delivery pipelines must be carefully designed, resourced and managed effectively and efficiently
for ex in manufacturing:
the typical work invovles right from procurement to order fulfillment. In logistics, finding out the best possible routes for transportation, assigning the right materials, etc., and making sure that processes involved are effective and efficient...
or in IT
Right from job creation till a project team is assigned , there comes the work for Operations manager. He will be responsible for getting the talents , measuring their performance, estimating the time periods, assinging teams to new projects, allocating resources(computers, workspace etc.,) to the new teams, co-ordinating with Delivery Head for client interaction and many more.(source: SKYLORK)
We deal and function in every domain u can think of and are the most imp part of an organisation... we are the blood for survival and fuctioning of every dept of the organisation... the imp of ops management is being recognised in every industry and is the fastest growin career segement today..
let me take further question in a new post cause too long a post actually becomes too boring... so no that u hae understood that Ops is in every field in the industry whether its in manufacturing or logistics or health care or IT or Banking or BPO or finacial sector or or or and or.... u also need to understand that we have our presence in very dept of an organisations... thus we have ops in marketing, ops in HR etc...
However lemme tell u that we are more of specialist than generalist.. ANd SIOM churns our techno-business managers who are super-specialists... Still u will find people here who are inclined towards becoming a generalist so that they can play with more fields, however u can already see that future belongs to specialists and not to generalists... and all who are more generalists shouls understnd that as climb up the corporate ladder the speacialisation soon vanishes... Right??
2.What do you actually learn in Operations management ??
In operations mangagement we study to deal with all the things i mentioned above... for the course curriculam and subjects u need to check the website...
To add we at SIOM are given:
a. Green Belt certification in SIX SIGMA
b. SAP any one module trained with a fully functional SAP lab.
and much more for wich pls check the website....
3.is it the whole operation of a company or something regarding that ?
Mate the organisations is ours to play with, as we climb up the ladder...
regards
