Hi,
I have been reading a lot about the
CAT-retest and i felt the need to say something about it.
Let me start however by saying that I understand a large number of students have wasted precious minutes on the wrong questions, myself being one of them, however i feel
CAT retest is not an adequate solution.
My reasons for the above statement are as follows:
1--
CAT is conducted at great cost to the IIMs and would be too time consuming at this stage. It would postpone the 2007-09 session by 2 months. This would affect everyone, most of all the students who get into IIMs this year.
2-- It would be unfair to a large number of students who have done well, and asking would retest would result only in a series of PILs but both aggrieved parties...
3-- This is not a case of an exam paper being leaked, and hence does not require a re-test. Wrong questions are wrong and should have been treated as wrong or unsolvable questions by the candidates. If the student has wasted too much time at a question..( i repeat this includes me..) it shows his inability to make a discerning judgement and move on...after all no one expects you to solve every question in the
CAT paper.
Now...lets get into detail...
A)---------A question in RC had only 3 options in a particular paper set...( say 444)
The question should be marked normally for the other 3 sets... because eliminating the question would give a +1 mark benefit to someone who got it wrong or a -4 loss to someone who got it right.
In 444 it should be neglected.
This immediately makes it clear that cutoffs will differ according to paper set...
B)--------- The survey question in QA was printed wrong in 333.
Here also the question should be marked regularly in 111,222,444 for the aforesaid reasons...
In set 333, the question was wrong, however the correct answer was present in the options...
Now, anyone who attempted it, and marked it wrong, was foolish enough to realise the question was wrong and wasted time due to lack of judgement ( which is an important attribute for a manager). Hence he should be penalised -1.
Anyone who attempted it and marked the right answer, must have fluked. Since it is not possible to get the correct answer with the given data, hence he must be awarded -1 as well ( he is displaying characteristics unbecoming of a manager )
C)---- The free luggage question in QA... did not have the correct answer in the options...
Here anyone who marked an answer, either fluked it, or made a bad judgement...
Hence he should be penalised -1.
For anyone who did not mark it, it is consequential whether he wasted time on the question or not, since a good future manager is expected to realise the value of his time in
CAT and move ahead...
I sympathise with the
CAT takers who feel cheated because of these errors, and must add that i myself lost ten minutes due to my shortsightedness and bad decisions. However, i do not feel demanding a re-test is a right solution.
