Hey, can anyone shed some light on how bschools abroad view CFA... I mean considering CFA and MBA Finance greatly overlap... if one's looking to do an MBA, does CFA act as a value add or as a deterrant.. (they may say: You're already a CFA, why you doing your MBA in Finance?)

Also, in that case, does it make sense to do an MBA in a different field, say marketing, in order to get the best of both worlds.. finance taken care of by the cfa degree (assuming you clear the 3 levels, that is)


Im in a serious dilemma over this issue. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ankur,

No Uni might say that "You're already a CFA, why you doing your MBA in Finance" because an MBA is much broader concept than CFA which only focuses on finance and capital markets. A certified financial analysis is a study of core finance activities which may not teach you management skills whereas in an MBA you may not study finance at the level which you can do it in your CFA studies. So they land into different genres. Anyways MBA can be viewed as a long term progressive study. You can complete your CFA, gain some good experience and boom - Go for MBA. :)

I am a software engineer in Bangalore with 2 years
work-ex. I was planning to take the GMAT by August

better than an MBA? secondly, i also want to know if
i should join any institute which is a cfa partner,
and which would cover up 70% of the cfa CBOK and how
useful will that be? Should i take up both the
degrees? I also found that University of North
Carolina--Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler) which is one of
the top20 in US provides the MBA degree and is also a
CFA partner? Other institutes which are CFA partners,
gives the MS or MSc degree.

in some cases if your an exceptional candidate and have good acads, they consider you.

honestly i dont know much about cardiff Business School.. but if i apply to it, my main concern is how many students have successfully managed to get a job out there and wat kind of jobs. I've heard majority are freshers there and its hard to get a job.

They consider only if a person is some what short of 3 years work-ex, say if a person having 2.5 years of work-ex and good academics then they might consider that person.

About Cardiff, first and foremost it cannot be compared to LBS, Oxford ( Sad Business School) Manchester Bus School, Warwick & many more because it provides a freshers MBA which does not require students to have mandatory work-ex. Although it has RAE rating of 5 and in the last Teaching Quality Assessment exercise, teaching was described as 'Excellent'. Employment opportunities in UK are low as compared to TOP Business Schools.

Msc in investment management from ICMA center has been approved as a program partner with CFA institute, whereby u cover CFA level 1.
Am concerned about Msc in International Securities, Investment and Banking course, as am confused between an MBA & the above mentioned program.

I cant get into AMBA accredited B-schools as i dont have 3 years work-ex, which is a mandatory condition.

went to edwise, but i've got to find out some info about the school from other sources.

so if anyone like to share some inside news about CBS, what are the aids to students, no of students unable to find jobs. kind of bank loans? what kind of jobs do students get once they pas out?

Go for Warwick if you got an offer letter from WBS.

If you got 3 years work-ex after your graduation, then why dont u try and apply to AMBA accredited B-schools like Lancaster or Warwick or any other B-schools better than Carbs.
