I think if you pretty clear about Operations management, You could aslo look to do a PHD in it( IF edcuation sector/Teaching in BSchools)..you may have to do masters before it say an MA or something you may check in google but it surely would be good move too..I have a known who did the same so i suggested you.

I started my career as a .net developer in i-flex solutions (though my designation was associate consultant...it was not the real consulting)...everything was working just great till i got the call from iflex consulting (another vertical of iflex) in the 6th month...i was scared to move as I had just started my career...there was a big question mark on what next!!! With lots of if's and lots of but's..crossing my fingers and hoping for the best...i took this risk and went to the consulting (IT gov and process consulting grp)...3 months later I flew to Tokyo...it was an amazing exp there...lots and lots to learn...the world here was very diff than the development field...working with peple having an average of 15 yrs in industry was never going to be easy...during one training session we were informed about the level of risk involved for the client...believe me...i was not expecting this...there was no room for any mistakes...but i never gave up...an year later...i decided to make information security my speciality...i learnt the tricks and traits of being a good consultant...learned as many existing practices as possible...finally...i did my Lead auditor course in ISO 27001...and became one....i completed audits for few biggies (top tier banks) and i feel proud of the work i do....Today when i look back...i get this laugh on my face...what if i had not chosen to move to consulting...i would have been just another software engg in the crowd...

Sometimes taking big risks pays big dividends...never give up :thumbsup:

You seem to be a bit mistaken. Consulting != auditing.
The big 4 that you mentioned are in auditing. The traditional Big-5 in consulting (not IT consulting but proper strategy) are: McK, BCG, Bain, Booz and Monitor.

P.S.: Deloitte, Capgem, Accenture & the rest also have strategy consulting groups but they're miniscule and/or insignificant compared to the bigwigs.

Let me add few points here,The big5 also is doing a similar IT Consulting as the big4..the difference here is MAJOR..ie big 4s do IT Audits(Btech,CA/CISA etc)..& Bigs5 do IT Consulting ( Strategy/Risk etc MBA or with heavy duty working in Big4 firms still prefer MBA..)..lot of things can be interlinked if you are non mba..

My Queries:
Can any1 still help in explaining where a btech can be fit in big4..( referring to for mid-carriers)..i see btech + CISA..

- wrt an MBA what profile one can expect post mba if one has a n exp in big4 for 3 years in IT Risks & Audits.. Here , how would Big5 consider this workex..i guess pretty relevant ??
- IS work life tough in big4, as lot of travelling is expected..might cut out study hours for CAT/GMAT/CISA..plz help me with facts..(much needed working hours too stegnous )

I am a Civil Engg grad from IIT Roorkee, working for past 20 months at Manhattan Assiciates (a leading supply chain solution providing firm) as a software developer.
I am writing CAT for past 3 yrs trying to shift vertical from coding to management and I am really interested in using my work ex and doing an MBA in SCM (related field). The courses you have mentioned from MIT and Logistics institue seem really specific but I have doubts regarding how good they are.
I am in a dilemma now. I am thinking of quitting my job so that I can write GMAT and preapare for CAT yet again in peace (with no work pressure).
But then I will loose out on the work ex, which is still less than 2 years, plus there is still uncertaininty of clearing CAT.

Any advice?

I am no good person to give advices rest assured would convey to you quite strongly that there is no substiute to workex..Keep working and do anything simultaneously please.. Quiting job is absolutely ridiculous.. SCM is too good and specific too..Just try to explore what you wana do for your longer goals and fit in your desired MBA to give longer benifits..dont dare to think quitting , it could back fire ..cat is unpredictable..keep ur focus n keep working..

Il assume if you CA and getting into protivity would be too good, and b4 mba it would be a great profile and the firm brand is best in the domain ur placed..

As you have said now that its Consulting you like post mba be it IIM C,ISB both rocks big time..get that admit and m sure for IIM calls also you have ISB defered admit onto your resume so you really have got the best chance to make it..after you get an admit from each try sharing your profile with IIM guys (A,B,C)..if you feel that you can get summers in Big 4 Global Consulting m sure you should get into that ..Regarding ISB may be you can see that Profile of Incoming candids matters..Though i feel youhave got everything right defianlty global CFA would help later into your carrier as after gaining Exp. in Consulting domain(Industries) like your are doing currently-Private Equity can be the best bit later..but yeah do check one thing as i read some where that your acads were low by your current stats which are great enough to get into "Strategic Consulting" as i have heard they(MCK,BCG,league) go for "Supirior Acads" + High Gmat (which you have)
Rest ofcourse Its all about Networking later after Education..

Sice your profile has CFA L1 i assume you looking for I.Banking your post MBA offer.. so for that i guess "Summers" is what majorly Ibankings firms are looking for since you have "IT Consulting" profile pre-mba you can with ISB get into Consulting(management) but i guess for Ibanking IIM C which is there in your kitty list of Interviews..You Should again think about it as All Consulting firms /Ibanking other Niche profile are also at C ,
But yeah ISB has all the benifts otherwise and ofcourse you have the best bit to come out of saving 1 year oppurtunity wise..

I'm looking at Strategy (Functional/Operational) consulting as a career. Although I did CFA L1, I am not really thrilled about the banking industry, and it is not just because of the recession. I know the career path I choose after MBA is most probably going to last me my entire career, and I don't want to do something which I don't think is my calling.

I have realised that satisfaction and a sense of pleasure in what one is doing matters more than the money one gets, and yes I am aware of the kind of money the BFSI (Banking and Financial services industry) can fetch. But What i've been given to understand from my limited world view and the seniors I have interacted with is that Banking (Investment banks are no more a term in use post reforms), also means the worst in terms of work/life balance as compared to other common post MBA career paths, and also means a lot of slogging, working under huge stress, and number crunching which might excite some, but although I might say I'm decently gifted at it, I don't find it very exciting.

Marketing and General management can give an even better work/life balance than Consulting (on an average, from what I understand), but then again, Strategy consulting has everything I have ever dreamt of in a career. (And a CFA L1, and L2 (in june), might still add up to my Resume, because understanding the financial statements, leverages and ratios of a company/entity you are giving advice to can only add to your value as a consultant, as far as my understanding goes)

I want to ask you, as well as others who might care to read and respond and give their $0.02, Would ISB or IIM-C make more sense if one wants to pursue a career in Strategy consulting, for a person with my profile (see signature).

I did some research , IIM-C had 42 Consulting placements, according to the website, out of 290 total placed. ISB says out of a batch of 414, 145 candidates got into Consulting sector.

Then again, Consulting is a broad term, and doesn't necessarily means Strategy Consulting, it might encapsulate HR Consulting / IT consulting (although in the same pie chart for ISB, Technology was a separate head, but well, u never know the details), which are fields I would not like to work in.

I want to know from people, especially those who have deep knowledge of placements of any or both of these 2 schools, to please spell out in a little bit detail that where is the probability of my getting a St consulting job more .

I had mentioned I was not considering C, but a kick in the backside from a few of my IIM friends, has kind of atleast goaded me on to prepare for the next stage, and they have asked me to keep the final decision pending till when/if I get a final admit from C. I am doing so, because in any case, even if I join ISB as I am more inclined to at THIS point in time, an IIM C admit wouldn't look bad on my hungry,empty resume )

Hi Buddy,
7 pointer may be less but and i think it is definately less but by far try to find some alumini or something ,if you can get a referral based call it is much better and you can play safe. Once that happens and you get a call google some docs vault guides of case studies ,behaviour interviews stuff..if you find then go through them ( if you dont find them you can send me pm il send you then)..

Please keep a back up option too ,firms which work in similar lines..
But you talked about salary,roles stuff.. MCK name on you resume it makes a lot of differnce so just keep up the chill and ya do some networking to find a referall..
