Hi All,

I am b.Tech Graduate from BIT,Mesra,Ranchi and passed out in 2008 from ECE branch(with 67%, 12th -61% and 10th -68%).Basically i am from Jaipur.I am working from last 4.5 years in IT industry and in jaipur in private IT company.Now i am looking for MBA.I want to took guidance that for which MBA i should go and basically what is difference between 1 year Executive MBA and Regular 2 year MBA.Is executive is also equivalent same as 2 year Regular MBA.In future also i want to do job in jaipur only due to some reasons But yeah i can do 1 year Executive MBA from any good B-School .Now i m fed up of coding so want to do MBA and want to change stream and want to work in management work.It can be either Telecom company,IT company,Bank, etc etc.

Can any one guide me pls .

Neo2000 Let me break down the different types of MBA currently available to people

Regular MBA - can be both 2yr program (IIMs, MDI, SPJain etc) and 1yr program (Great Lakes, ISB, Emory-Goizueta in the US ) Yes, in India they are referred to as PGDBM but that is a technicality. World-wide, these degrees are recognized as an MBA. A fresher getting into an IIM will still be awarded a PGDBM and that will still be considered equivalent to an MBA.

A Masters in Management or MiM is a 1-2yr program that is not quite an MBA and is generally for people with 1-2years of work-ex. Couple of great programs are Duke and HEC-Paris.

Executive MBA - commonly known as EMBA that is offered to people who do not want to quit their jobs but still desire a top MBA (Wharton/Harvard, Stanford). Students in these programs generally visit campus on the weekend and return to work on Monday. Different criteria for admission that a regular MBA. The IIMs also offer an Exec-MBA and these are focussed on people with more than 4-5years of work-ex and who do not necessarily want to spend 2yrs away from their job. It's a branding decision by the IIMs but is still a great course.

@Ani_Ana is looking for a regular 1 year MBA program. Her options are a little limited since not many colleges offer 1 yr program within india. Since she wants to work in india, the IIMs, and GLIM are great options. I believe MDI and SPJ also offer 1 yr programs. Where she chooses to go is entirely up to her.

Neo2000 IIRC, the AICTE doesn't even recognize them as MBA - hence the PGDBM. Only those degrees offered by Universities are recognized as an MBA. Now, when I say world-wide recognition it's true - an IIM grad could walk into any top firm and say I did an MBA from the IIMs and they aren't going to question him and say "No, you did only an MiM". The degree is recognized as being equivalent to an MBA.

Coming to AMBA, please note that some of earliest business schools were started in the US. Thus the AACSB is the oldest body for accreditation. the AMBA is more global in nature since the AACSB, atleast in the early days, only accredited US b-schools and the AMBA was a way to focus on non-US b-schools - specifically European b-schools.

Whatever happens, this discussion is pointless. How the degree is recognized in the market is important. One can be nitpicky and say it's an MiM but nobody cares. I repeat - The degree is recognized as being equivalent to an MBA. and that is all that matters.
