IIM Calcutta is reportedly going to seek funds from corporates and its alumni to complete its pending infrastructure projects. Sounds a bit strange, coming from IIM-C, but apparently the school does not want to leave a single stone unturned in making the campus a classy one.
Given a choice, Indian students would rather go for paper based tests than an computer-based one. The test-takers' profile of the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) held on September 6th, 2009 say it all. MAT gave the candidates a choice between taking up the offline and computer-based examination; out of the 30,000 total candidates who registered for the test, only 3,000 opted for the computer based version. Finally the online test was held only in ten out of the scheduled 30 cities which included most of the tier one cities such as Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Calcutta, with maximum people opting for online in Delhi and Bangalore. Interestingly Mumbai did not opt for online but Kanpur did.
The Supreme Court ruled and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have got cracking on admitting more students. IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has recently announced that the batch size will increase from 318 to 407 in next years admissions. IIM Calcutta (IIM-C) had gone for a big increase in seats for this years admissions itself. These numbers are heartening but increasing batch intake by 54 percent in two years time will definitely be an exercise in management for the IIMs.
There is a reason every problem has been connected with increase in population. Things in India just aren't designed for a large number of people. Think vaguely, do you remember any place/situation where things went smoothly once the number of people went even a little above normal?
