Prof SSS Kumar of IIMK is CAT 2012 Convenor. No major changes in CAT paper as yet
by Lajwanti D'Souza in IIM Kozhikide, CAT 2012, Prof SS Krishna on 25 June '12

Prof SSS Kumar, of The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIMK) has been appointed CAT (The Common Admission Test) Convenor for 2012. Prof Kumar who teaches Finance, Accounting and Control is from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh and joined IIMK in 2003.

The news was confirmed by an official from IIMK, though Prof Kumar was unavailable for comment.

An MBA from S.V. University, Prof Kumar worked in the industry for two years before sifting to academics in 1998. Before IIMK, Prof Kumar was a lecturer in ISM Dhanbad and earned his doctorate from Indian School of Mines Dhanbad. One of the more talked about papers written by this finance professor is on the subject of reforms in the Indian market, in which he discussed the introduction of "issuing shares through the book building process which finally aims at efficient price discovery."

While it is not confirmed but sources within the CAT camp say that no changes have been planned for CAT 2012 as yet. Some changes that former CAT convenors discussed when in office, included multiple CAT attempts and taking CAT offshore. Whether Prof Kumar pushes for the changes is yet to be seen. Prof Himanshu Rai from IIM Lucknow who was CAT Convenor for 2010 had discussed these ideas in a big way when he was in charge. "These changes will be good for CAT and should happen. However I envisaged these changes to happen only in 2013, a good five years since the exam went online in 2009. The online exam needs to stabilise before big changes are made."

Prof Rai said that taking CAT overseas as well as permitting multiple attempts like in GMAT require solid ground work and only when that is done can changes be implemented.

When asked what advice he would like to give the new CAT convenor, Prof Rai said that all efforts should be in the direction of making this year's exam as glitch-free as the previous two years. "The attitude should be firm and not clouded by the success of the last two years."

CAT 2011 had witnessed a major shift in the pattern. The traditional three sections were reduced to two and both the sections were timed to 70 minutes each. Another change was that candidates could not move to and fro between the sections.

    • vinayhudli @rahuldude how does the slot affect the score. i guess normalisation was brought in to make sure that comparison among the candidates will be fair.i am not so familiar with this normalisation process and slot, could you guide me

    • ABCLIKS When the sample size is on higher side, the chances that your percentile will match your potential are high. So try to choose the date when u expect, most people will take the exam. It will be a weekend/National Holiday. (better it should be a Sunday)It won't certainly be in the first week. Probably somewhere in the middle of the window or at the end.

    • Ricky25 @Omkar Bibikar: You are making a hasty generalization . If you are not a heavy scorer in mocks , I seriously advice you or anyone not to do so . GibsonLesPaul: Do not go for the first day morning/evening slot as most of the dummy candidates would turn up the same day

    • rahuldude see if u r very well prepared nd can crack paper of any level of difficulty den i wud advise you to choose a weekend slot coz papers in weekend slot are a bit tough bt ur raw score is scaled up in the normalisation process and u benefit big time .. one of my friend hd weekend slot he scored 99.99 % :) ! if u r nt fully prepared or r scared abt a difficult paper , choose a weekday slot .. papers wud be easier .. bt ur raw score wud be scaled down in the normalisation process , so evn if ur paper is great ,u may nt score accordingly ! P.S :i am nt sure abt dis , bt it has been my observation from my experience.

    • ABCLIKS @Sage Bhai, I think there is a misunderstanding. In my comment, I didn't say higher the sample size, higher the percentile. What I have written is "Higher the chances that your percentile matches your potential". Huge difference between the two. :) And yes, statistics(which is used for normalization) does say that higher the sample size, probability of error reduces. Read the more about that here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_I_and_type_II_errors

    • Ricky25 There is no misunderstanding (Utni agrezi samajhta hun ). for example : A , who averages around 80% in all his/her mocks , chooses a weekend slot along with N no of other candidates . Now let N/2 no of candidates average more than 85 percentile in mocks and the slot is of moderate-difficult difficulty or say more tough as compared to the other slots. So , even if Mr.A performs to his potential and everyone else does , Mr .A is screwed . And please do not quote wiki :D 'higher the sample size , probability of error reduces ' -this is commonsense . What I mean preferring weekend slots or slots when most people take their exams can be risky

    • cricketfreak I might appear a frustrated aspirant, but there is something wrong with this college IIMK. It's been either run by foolish people, or I am being foolish. They have such a weird admission criteria, who knows CAT this year is beyond an apti exam. IIMK is more of interested in class Xth performance, and not the current level of students. I just wish CAT2012 is a smooth experience for us

    • cricaddict @cricketfreak Every institute have their own criteria and thats coz they have identified something which they seem to believe has been working for them well.. And we can't deny the fact that IIMK has been doing really well.. So rather than worrying about criteria's it would be advisable to concentrate on things in your hand rather than those not in your hand.. If IIM's are making it acad-heavy criteria, be it.. face it and have good backups ready as there are B-Schools which lay minimal importance to Acads.. And 1 thing for sure CAT 2012 should be smooth experience as CAT seems to found a way to get rid off tech and other probs in 2009-2010.. 2011 was smooth experience for more than 98% students..
