"The seats at IIM Shillong will be available through the common pool of CAT 2007 admissions," he informed about the seventh IIM, which shall be called Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM), Shillong.
"The special name was chosen on the collective wish of the governments of all north-eastern states," he added. The institute will still be at par with the rest of the IIMs at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Indore and Lucknow in terms of its status and ownership, said Prof Tandon, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
The plan to lay the seventh IIM in north-east India was laid three years ago in order to provide an institute with national stature in that region. The Union HRD Ministry has in the past week issued recruitment advertisements in the media for a Director to head RGIIM, Shillong and more advertisements looking for faculty are expected to be issued in the coming months. A non-recurring expenditure fund of Rs 120 crores has been granted to the IIM, a large part of which will be used to build a campus in Shillong. Until then, the institute will function from the old premises of NEHU in Mayurbhanj complex.
Asked if RGIIM, Shillong's accessibility will be an obstacle in arranging resources and jobs for its students, Prof Tandon said, "These issues will be worked out in due time once a proper administrative team is in place. But on the whole I think that having an IIM in the region will help boost north east India's potential in natural resources, forestry, horticulture and related sectors by a huge margin," Prof Tandon said.
Sources in NEHU said that although RGIIM, Shillong will not have reservation for north east Indian students, having an IIM in the vicinity would get more students from that area to consider higher education in specialized institutes.
Will an IIM in north east work? Discuss the issue on the forum-
anonymous An IIM in north east is definitely a welcome step.Any concern regarding its capability in providing job opportunities is uncalled for considering the success of IIM Kozhikode which again is not located in an industrial hub.The quality education provided by the institute in adherence to the highest standards of the brand IIM should take care of these concerns. But somehow the special name of the institute is something that does not go very well and there is no need or reason to come up with a special name for the institute. It in fact,it does not reinforce the image of an autonomous institute committed to quality education. None of the IITs having any special name is a case in the point.#1 • 28 Jul '07 Like -
anonymous Naming an IIM after Rajiv Gandhi is the worst thing that could have been thought of by our politicians. Hope that the politicians dont fiddle around with the names of other IITs and IIMs. The famous 100-yr old King George's Medical University in Lucknow has been renamed Chatrapti Shahuji Maharaj Medical University by Mayawati!!!!!!#2 • 28 Jul '07 Like -

anonymous here we go once again... after airports, roads and what not, we now have an IIM being named after the Gandhi family by the Congress sycophants. whats the point that is point that they're trying to prove.. that all the infrastructure the country has today is a bounty by the Gandhi's? c'mon guys its out of the taxpayer's money..its no Gandhi glory.. let it just be IIM. spare us the prefix (RG) at least this time!!#4 • 30 Jul '07 Like -

anonymous Regional location of IIMs is for political reasons, so is the name. Ahmedabad inspite of bad location could do it because the local industrialist decided to fully cooperate with the institute. Most of the initial learning of Profs of IIM-A is through Textile and Pharma industry located in Gujrat. IIM-C suffered as the industrial town declined. Profs there are mostly engaged in government reports. Bangalore was a bad location and therefore concentrated on PSUs and took years to come up till industrialisation of Bangalore city happened. Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode are bad locations and IIMs located in these towns still suffer the handicap. Lucknow is trying to cover the handicap by expanding in Noida than Lucknow. MDI expanded with the growth of Gurgaon. Location of these professional schools nearer industrial town helps community, students and academia. In 1994, on visit to Kellog for renewing the UNDP fellowship program, it was suggested to Minister of HRD to drop the approach of b-schools of 60 and make them big- Go back to Delhi and merge all B-schools to make them thousand+ colleges so that Profs are not school teachers and become specialists. Who listens?. ISB has already shown the strength of being big. Who cares?#6 • 30 Jul '07 Like -
anonymous Naming should not be done like that!!! Leave it as IIM......#7 • 30 Jul '07 Like -

anonymous I think ,the thoughts that IIM Shillong will not do well due to location is misplaced. In US, universities are often located in sleepy towns and villages and they have faced hardly any handicap. Comparibly Shillong is a beatiful place providing a serene environment for education. Regarding Access, Shillong is in a way better accessible to even IIM Kolkatta. You can take a flight to Guwahati and post that 100 km of beautiful rooads taking two hours. Reaching Joka where IIM Calcutta is located from Kolkatta airport takes more than two hours coupled with noise and pollution.#13 • 18 Aug '07 Like -
anonymous Well...its good news that a new IIM is coming up but the prefix RG in the name? Its simply ridiculous!I don't understand the logic behind the name...what do the politicians want to prove? My advice to the politicians-"You have already played a lot with the sentiments of the citizens...atleast maintain the dignity of educational institutions...spare the academicians!"#14 • 24 Aug '07 Like -
anonymous Does it really make a difference to aspirants whether the name of a former prime minister of India is added. At the end of the day all that matters ina B- School are brand name, Quality of work at the school and placements. Since it is part of the IIM family, the School will have the brand tag. urther how can attaching the name of a person who has served the country be rediculous as I read in some of the other posts regarding this article. Come on people, GROW UP !! Be proud of our leaders.#15 • 03 Nov '07 Like -
