IIM Calcutta tweaks summer placement process to de-stress students, allows multiple offers
by Astha A in IIM Calcutta, summer placements, placements 2013 on 02 November '12

Despite a tight job market, in search of a dream placement offer (Photo courtesy: thegoldguys.blogspot.com/)

To help students combat placement stress, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta will allow the 2012-14 batch PGP students to have multiple summer placement offers from companies. The institute is also introducing a day break between the summer process, which companies could use to hold group discussions (GD) for students one day prior to interviews, informed an IIM Calcutta press release.

In the previous placement process at IIM-C, students had to bow out of the placement process once they had a final offer, even if it was not from their stated preferred function (marketing, finance, etc). In the new system, students with a final offer can appear for one more company's interview for an internship from their preferred function. But there's a catch --- the second interview has to be one scheduled on the same day, unlike the 'dream function' or 'dream company' choice at several b-schools wherein you can interview with a dream company regardless of which day it comes to campus on.

So does this mean that the students can have one more internship offer from their preferred function? No, Somesh Kamra, placement representative at the institute told PaGaLGuY. The option is available to students only if they have not been able to bag a job offer from their desired function, he said. Hence, if a student desires a marketing profile but has recieved a final offer from the operations function, he will be able to appear for marketing interviews on the same day while keeping his operations offer.

Since a large number of companies visit the campus each day, students will have a lot of options to choose from, Somesh said.

GDs will now be held in the day break in between the placement days. Earlier, the group discussions were held either the night before the scheduled interview slots or early morning on the same day. The addition of this day break will reduce the pressure and help both companies and students take better decisions, Somesh said.

For starters, the institute is keeping the day-break for only one day during the placement process. "Most day zero companies do not have a GD, but most companies scheduled for day one hold a GD. This is the reason we have converted day one into the day-break, where only those companies who have their interview process the next day will have their GDs," Somesh told PaGaLGuY.

The changes have been introduced in the midst of a job market that stands affected by the global economic crisis. The Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) recently declared that it will cut 10,000 jobs worldwide over the next three years, reducing its current workforce by 16%. Schools with large batch sizes are particularly on high alert, anticipating a job offer crunch. A source at IIM Indore told PaGaLGuY that even a wide alumni base spread across industries worldwide wouldn't completely ease the pressure.

IIM Calcutta's move however is in stark contrast to the likely response of b-schools to a tight job market. The multiple offer system reflects the school's belief that not only would it arrange enough job opportunities to place its entire batch of 462, but they would also have the luxury of choosing one offer out of many options. But given the job market slowdown, allowing multiple internship offers could also lead the cream of the batch to hog the jobs away from the relatively weaker students.

Interestingly, the institute may find support for the incorporated changes in the 2012-13 QS TopMBA.com Jobs and Salary Trends report. Conducted between March and July 2012, the survey has projected a growth in the demand for MBA graduates in 2013 among employers. According to the report, MBA graduate demand will grow rapidly in Asia, particularly India and China, accelerating from 15% in 2012 to 26% in 2013. The report also forecasts a 23% growth in MBA graduate demand in the Middle East and a 2% growth in North America in 2013.

How have companies reacted to the changes in the placement process? According to Prof Krishanu Rakshit, placement in-charge at IIM-C, a number of companies have voiced concerns. The main negative in such a situation is the possibility of students turning down job offers made by the companies, lured by choice.

Questioned, Prof Rakshit insisted that the changes have only been adopted on a trial basis for the summer placement process. They will apply similar changes to the final placement process after a thorough evaluation of the problems faced in the summers process, he said.

Nor will this affect the goodwill between the institute and companies, Prof Rakshit asserted, reasoning that companies would be happier if students joined them out of choice rather than desperation.

The summer placement process will start on November 5, 2012, with the day-long break scheduled for November 6.

    • sb29 The 'catch' is a big one. If the situation is good, most people will apply in their own intended specialization, say marketing. If the situation is bad, people apply to all functions just to get a job. In that case, it will create huge problems in the batch as some people will end up with multiple offers and some will struggle to get even a single offer. Given a big batch and the economic condition, I am sure when the actual placements happen, people will job offers will be pressurized to 'you-know-what' during the process. ;)

    • ayushbhalotia In this system of placements, good students with strong profile will have a huge advantage and surely will get de-stressed but the weak students will have one more reason to sweat..!!!

suppose 2 good students in morning converts HUL (marketing profile), and HUL chooses only 2 students from IIM C...but both the students want to work with a consulting firm. In the evening both the students on the same day converts Mckinsey and they leave the HUL offer...now HUL will not come back to the campus next day to find 2 more candidates.. HUL will probably hire 2 extra candidates from the next B school they will be visiting maybe XLRI or FMS or any other IIMs etc etc...Now what has happened in the process is that, suppose 2 students who really wanted marketing profile are at a huge loss ...

P.S - I do not mean to offend anyone or any Alumni...IIM C is surely one of the best B School in the country..if I am wrong anywhere then pls. correct me..

    • magnumopus22605 @ayushbhalotia: Which campus would dare to keep Mckinsey in the evening and HUL in morning of the same day.
The point I m trying to make is, even in campuses A/B/C Firms are given slots accordingly, McK is a Day 0 consult firm in all campuses across India. HUL would not even get a Day 0 slot in some campuses (A/B/C)

I dont think any MBA aspirant portal let alone website comes close to what you guys are doing ...... Kudos to @Apurv and your team

    • bkd.exe good to see this change finally coming in place.. with the huge number of companies that prefer to take candidates through the PPO route.. this move was long due ! About time that everyone realizes that the two month internship is not purely an academic expertise and students deserve to have a choice based on preferences !

    • ayushbhalotia @magnumopus22605 --- HUL and Mckinsey were just 2 examples...same thing can happen with any 2 companies in the same domain too...say Goldman Sachs and Mckinsey or Kearney etc or HUL, P&G; or Nestle...u missed the point completely i think...

    • datta123 @subhro_IITKgp I disagree...first there was NO POINT bringing that Diversity factor in here and then I believe sometimes inclusion of people from all Sectors/gender etc is necessary even at the cost of merit and whining always about Merit sacrificed and blah blah is just veiled arrogance of the hierarchical Indian Education system and its Students.

    • DEVILISHANGEL Choice is Democracy, Lets celebrate that idea. Also lets celebrate the idea that a better profile should get more choices because we live in a free world that lets better people have more choices to choose from. That very idea is what makes up the developed world developed, unline ours which is systematically based on hundreds of quotas which defunct the job market. BTW also its a very nice way for non-quota kids, given they have a better profile, to get better job opporunities and therefore its gives them that edge.

    • sb29 @DEVILISHANGEL Yes. That is a good perspective to have. However, you know what kind of chaos is there during the placement days. No one will be in a situation to think this way. :)

    • DEVILISHANGEL @sb29: Haha. yeah we know ;) But The chaos is systematically organised and seems to be how college placement committes/colelges themselves want it to happen. Since most kids don't know what they want, except higher salary, college placecoms play to that beat and try to cartelise the hiring process by trying to do the most good for the highest number. Great idea but screwed internal philosophy for the long run. I dunno why but I have a feeling such kind of hiring policy helps neither the company nor the b-school and in the long run is doomed to fail. How many Campuses Hires as Analysts and Management Trainees stay in the same company which hired them from the b-school after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years and 5 years? what the decay rate? There can be a study on that by someone. Also there should be an article on Pagalguy that lists out the entire hiring process at MBA schools in US, EU, Asia-ex-India vs India. That would be an interesting article to read for everyone.

    • sb29 @DEVILISHANGEL Very true. Yours truly is an example of people leaving after 2 years ;). I would peg the rate at around 20-30% for 2 years. I have seen that the first job is generally the 'discovery' phase when people think what exactly they want to do. Indian schools cannot follow the US/EU model as MBAs there know what they want to do in life as they have worked for almost half to three-quarters of a decade. On the other hand, we have so many freshers (again yours truly) or people with only 1-2 years work-ex making the majority of the junta in India. How many times have you heard people with 1-2 years of IT background cursing IT sector and promising never to return, based on their coding experience, little realizing that there is another side to it? So, much for perspective! Obviously, these people will try to run after the highest salary and brand till such time they get some perspective in life.

    • datta123 @subhro_IITKgp Who decides TOPPER AVERAGE MEDIOCRE??In WHAT??You may be great in solving CAT level quantz but you may not turn out to be a great manager and it can turn the other way round so they are just increasing their Interview base. Its as simple as that every other boy/girl in a college would be having crush on the best looking girl/boy but ultimately she/he decides whom to date :D You cant whine ki hey I had the biggest crush why is she dating the other guy/gal :P

    • arkuscaesar @subhro_IITKgp I think you read / place too much in to an aptitude test's ability to identify MERIT. While you may believe that the CAT is a wonderful (if not the best) test to check Aptitude (or MERIT as you prefer) you miss the point that the difference between a 99.99%iler and a 99%iler is actually very little indeed maybe 2-3 questions this way or that. If I still concede the fairness of this (and personally I don't) yardstick, your main point seems to be that diversity is what is letting the IIMs go to dogs.

Diversity of profile in incoming batches is quite the norm in even the most selective B-Schools abroad. To say that adopting/beginning to adopt this practice in India undermines the quality of incoming batches is not quite right.Peer learning is not only integral to a good B-school experience but peer learning across a diverse batch is what makes the difference between a good B-School experience and a great B-School experience.

Let's not forget that at the end of the day an MBA is a peculiar post graduation degree that is graduation discipline agnostic and encourages networking as an essential life skill (at least at the best B-schools - IIM C is probably the best on this score as well)

A diverse batch therefore adds layers of greater sophistication and depth to both your knowledge and professional network whether you like it or not , choose to use it or not.

Guess why not? food for thought - how do you compare a zamibian student vs japanese one? no the gmat score won't suffice. India is no different. Grow up.
