'CAT will continue to be online next year' - CAT Convenor
by Apurv Pandit in CAT 2009, Exam crash on 30 November '09

Approximately 7,000-8,000 candidates have not been able to take the computer-based CAT 2009 test due to snags in the Prometric-managed exam between Saturday and Monday, said Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad Director Dr Samir Barua at a press conference in Ahmedabad on Monday evening. A total of 47 testing labs failed on Saturday, another 33 labs collapsed on Sunday while about 30 labs could not administer the test on Monday, he added.

Sticking to the 'virus attack' theory and blaming the pitfalls of using technology, Prof Barua said, "The major reason appeared to be a virus attack. All precautions had been taken for protection against virus attack, but we did not succeed in doing so at a few labs. In some of the other centers, there were hardware problems and replacement took 2 hours."

"There are always bound to be problems in the first time such a huge exam takes place, especially if it is concerns technology. But we are working very hard to fix all the problems and accommodate all candidates," he added.

On rescheduling, he said, "We will try to accommodate the rescheduled tests within this week as we have a few empty slots available. But if required, we will stretch the CAT for two extra days on Dec 8 and 9." He added that the two-day extension would be avoided, as not all of the slots in this week were running on full capacity.

"When we reschedule, the students may not be able to choose a date or slot of their convenience. Their choice will thus get restricted. We'll try to make sure that the new slots are as convenient as per their initial choice. There would not be a single candidate who will not be able to take the test. But there will be inconvenience caused. Do we recognize and empathize with student? Yes we do. But the inconvenience is a fact of life and we cannot do anything at this stage," he said.

On some problems reported by candidates of disturbances caused by uncooperative invigilators who continued to use their mobile phones throughout the test, Prof Barua said, "We cannot be responsible if the invigilators talk on phone. The invigilators have moral responsibility too and something like this is possible even in paper based test."

"We believe that the ambience and environment has improved considerably since today," he said.

CAT Convenor Satish Deodhar ruled out the IIMs reverting back to the paper-based format and added that the CAT will be continue to be conducted online next year too.

"The preparation to make this online started in April 2007 but it took time to take off because of the tender process. We will continue to go in this direction and it's been a good beginning so far. Yes, we have somewhat failed, but we are correcting those problems now," he added.

Asked what sort of drills Prometric had conducted to prepare for the testing, Prometric Chief Operating Officer Charlie Karnan said that they had conducted mock drills at individual centers but not on a large scale. He added that 62% of affected candidates had already been rescheduled.

On problems reported by individual students of computer errors and reboots that gave some people extra time to solve problems, Prof Barua said, "If there is a genuine reason, they should report them to the center head and it would be considered. But if the students were idling their time away while the snag was being repaired then it is not the IIMs' responsibility."

Meanwhile, the Union Human Resources Development Ministry asked the IIMs to submit a report on the CAT failure.

If you have faced a serious problem while taking the CAT, please enter your experience in this form and we will try to get the take of the concerned authorities.

Edit: The quote about CAT continuing to remain online was incorrectly attributed to the IIMA Director in the title, whereas it was actually made by CAT Convenor Satish Deodhar. The error has been rectified.

    • shekys Prometric also administers tests like TOEFL and GRE.Did it face problems when it administer these tests for the first time? Would be good if PG can gather some information on this.

    • anonymous i feel the major issue is testing environment and level playing ground.why dont mr director understand that this is an exam of relative performance.it not merely about just appearing in the exam ,here if somebody gets advantage during test it may effect my result .the problem is that result wont reflect actual picture of our relative preparation.one of the people who was not even sure of getting a 80 per , is now expecting 95 per n is very happy(n he is not in favor of cat being canceled) just because he was able to cheat n share some answer during test. i dont know whether he will get it , ho sakta kuch uske bhi baap ho nakal mei.i am not against CBT , but the manner in which they are conducting it ONLY GOD CAN SAVE US.n friend what is the guarantee that all our answer would be saved ,it happened with me in mocks during hangups, n here it is hangups + VIRUS MY TEST IS ON 5TH BUT ,THE DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE , N IT SHOULD BE CANCELLED IMMEDIATELY.N A RETEST SHOULD BE HELD DOESN'T MATTER IF IT IS CBT BUT IT SHOULD BE IN A FAIR MANNER.

    • anonymous CAT 2009 wasn't a path-breaking initiative. It was a heart-breaking initiative. They (the IIMs and Prometric) helped create a problem and now they claim that they helped create a solution. First the bailouts and now the payouts ! Bravo IIMs and Prometric !

    • anonymous Hi Puys, The IIMs will not listen to calls from anxious test-takers. This much is clear from all that we have seen over the past one week. There's an apt saying in colloquial Hindi " Laaton ke bhoot, baaton se nahin maante". While we should continue to post messages on PagalGuy and others to show that the issue is alive and we are all united, the only way we can get them to pay heed is by hitting them where it hurts the most. And, this is how we can do it. Let us all prepare an excel sheet with the full details of the test takers who have valid concerns and who are willing to lend their voice (agree to include their CAT registration details in a list that shall be prepared, with PagalGuy's support, if required) to fight this injustice. Let us write directly to the top Corporates (Indian Co's and MNCs) who regularly go there for recruitment and point out the flawed process with valid, coherent points. We should put our best foot forward. Let us also write directly to the other top institutes that take CAT as one of the inputs to select candidates and dissuade them from considering CAT 2009 as one of the valid inputs. Let us also mail the major media channels in this regard. What this multi-pronged attack will do is: (a) Make the IIMs realize that we are not a divided community (that they cannot Divide-and-Rule) and that we want our voice to be heard. (b) Make the HRD Minister realize that the issue is not going to die down. Also, that he has got an issue to pay the IIM Professors in their own coin (Remember, just a couple of months back these Professors were boycotting classes demanding higher pay). (c) Make the IIMs worried about placement record for the 2012 batch (and, who knows, for the 2010 or 2011 batch too). (d) Galvanize support even from the past and current IIM students. For the alumni, it is a question of safeguarding the reputation of their alma-mater and for the current students, it is a question of not letting their achievements go down the drain due to the blunders of some Professors. (e) If other top B-Schools refuse to take CAT 2009 as one of the inputs, it exposes the hollowness of the IIMs claims. The IIMs will have no option but to realize that they cannot go on with this failed process without inviting all round criticism and losing their hard-earned reputation. (f) Even if some media channels refuse to entertain our pleas, we should remember that today competitive journalism rules. So some or the other channel will play this up and the others will be forced to fall in line. We represent the youth of India and no one can ignore such a sizeable segment. All businesses are dependent on us to survive and thrive. If you think these arguments are valid and are willing to lend your voice, please express your views. Then we can collect the details of all test-takers, draft a single letter that will be sent to Corporates, HRD Minister, Media groups, Non-IIM B-Schools etc. with the list of the test-takers sufficing for signatories to the letter. For more of my views, you can visit - http://cat-2009-online.blogspot.com

    • anonymous Dear Sridhar Have patience. This test is a leap forward in technological mindset of the community- educated India. Lets accept that the test in first four days was not properly conducted, we agree your but line of action is valid if this mistake had repeated itself twice or more. So such strict measures are not necessary now. Secondly, analyse, the primary job of professors is imparting high standard education, test conduction is the part of administration. These are different specialized jobs.Whatever blame we attribute shoould be for the administration in the iim's not for the respected teachers. Lastly ever Indian has a right toi speak for himself bUT IT IS A POINT OF ACUTE OBSERVATION, WHEN THE TEACHERS, PROFESSORS OR THE ARMY PEOPLE SPEAK FOR SALARY INCREMENT , THE COMMON MAN THINKS THE ARE GREEDY AND MORALLY WEAK because their primary job to serve the country without asking for rewards.THIS IS A BLEAK POINT OF VIEW, ANALYSE HARD.

    • samarth141 Now that the CAT is almost over... well its MOST DEFINITELY OVER for me.. thought ill just sit back and ponder on the future of the much hyped CAT... As you all know the CAT went online this year and it has been quite a ride... Below are possible changes that you can expect in 2010 as a result of this years learnings.... 1. IIM-Prometric tie up has been terminated. Applications are invited for new test partners. As of now the top contender seems to be PVR Cinemas who claims to handle more traffic in a day than the IIM does during the entire season. PVR CEO Mr Bijili in a statement said that PVR is the right choice for the CAT given their "expertise" in the Online system. The students will now be able to order pop corn as they take their CAT. 2. In case your servers crash.. Dont panic.. The popular "Orkut" message will now be replaced with - "YES - Both Donuts and Pepsi for you" 3. Sharad Pawar has been made Managing Director of the IIMs with immediate effect. Lalit Modi will be his deputy and together they plan to make CAT 2010 a bigger success than the IPL. The CAT will now follow a standard 20-20 pattern with power plays and refreshment breaks... 4. Our very own favourite Dr Vijay Mallya has announced the start of his yet un named MBA Training institute. CATrina Kaif will be the brand ambassidor for this venture and if rumors are to be believed Yana Gupta will take classes on shapes, curves and figures.... 5. Mallya Sir also plans to bring back to India, all previous years CAT question papers that Prometric had stolen and planned to auction in various 3rd World countries like Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina. 6. IIM has come out with a press statement rubbishing reports that the servers crash was due to over load or a virus attack for that matter. IIMs have a strong reason to suspect an ISI involvement in this daring attack on the future of every Indian sudent and there might have even been some funding by the Chinese. 7. Next years CAT might very well be conducted in Kabul under the protection of the Taliban. All those who return home are promised an IIM seat. 8. Director of one of the Symbiosis Institutes (Symbi Inst of Mis Communication SIMC) has come out telling that CAT is all rubbish and that SNAP is the most competitive exam in the country. This has infuriated the director of Lovely Professional University who claims no one can match their selection process. 9. Symbiosis Group of Institues to be very soon renamed Symbiosis Group of Companies. Plan to buy a few more hills lakes villages and slums and turn them into - "Education Destinations" 10. Deadline for SNAP 2009 has been extended for the 8th time this year. A note on the site says (yes you know it) Too many applicants so the servers are busy. At this rate SNAP will possibly have problems of seating suring the exam. The last date is 31 Dec 2009 now. The exam will be conducted on Dec 20th. Samarth.

    • D.K.I We can file a case against Mr. CAT CONVENOR for causing a lot of chaos, mental physical agony to students and most important not giving equal opportunity to all students who wrote CAT. Inside testing lab not everybody got the equal opportunity and threats. Many people wrote exam where all testing radio buttons were not working properly, many got questions with missing Graphs and information. Many had testing page without Watch and question number. Many underwent through multiple system crash while writing the test. It was not at all providing equal opportunity to all students. It might possible that this online CAT jeopardizes many students further career. Even after giving DISCLAIMER in IIM CAT website Mr. CAT CONVENOR may not know that a PREMIER COACHING INSTITUTE IN DELHI HAS BEEN CONDUCTING SECRET CLASS FOR ITS ONLY REGULAR-CLASSROOM STUDENTS FOR CAT2009,DURING FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER WHEN CAT09 WAS GOING ON IN TESTING LABS ACROSS INDIA,THESE CLASSES WERE HELD LATE IN THE EVENING, THEY WERE NOT ONLY TEACHING AND SOLVING ACTUAL CAT QUESTIONS BUT ALSO PROECTING NEXT DAY PAPERS.IT IS LIKE GIVING UNDUE ADVANTAGE TO A SECTION OF PREVELEDGED STUDENTS,AND ALSO IT IS PARALLEL TO PAPER-OUT OF CAT09.many students will tell that he had attended such class. I myself called that Coaching institute and was shocked to know that even Test-Series students of that coaching were not allowed to attend those classes, only those students who had paid more than Rs. 20,000 to become regular student of that coaching institute were allowed to attend those classes. It is High time that Top B-School of India like MDI, SPAIN, MDI, MICA, IMT dissociate itself from CAT, and starts its own parallel CAT. Reasons can be many as this time we saw prestigious CAT exam going on the pattern of BANK P.O/Clerical exams. It is not fair to change CAT exam into just another exams like MAT/SNAP/Bank po.It is like playing with live career of many students. People who have set these papers, they are not in clear mind that what they want to check in a candidate, are they want to check clerical ability of students or just test writing temperament. Result of it that going to effect other B school who select students from CAT,TOP B SCHOOL will not get best students.

    • Daemyn Surely IIM could follow the same pattern in taking the Test CBT next year too but at a higher price. The story of VIRUS is to fool the people. The reality of the failure lied somewhere else. Let us take a look on the cost of other parallel CBT tests : TOEFL - Approx $130 GRE - Approx $180 GMAT - Approx $250 (complete test though) Now what the price we paid to take CAT ? Mere $35. At this price it is really difficult to conduct a smooth tests for a couple of lacs students. The ground reality was the cost required to be spent on Technology (read it the so-called VIRUS free mechanism) was too little. So, basically the determination of test fees let down the repute of IIM as well as Prometic.

    • anonymous I think this year's CAT was a mere effort to check the temperament of exam takers rather than analysing their QA/VA/DI skills. WE as students should have known this, because this is the only time WE found the IIMs making predictions abt the entire pattern of the exam before hand. and that too 6 months before. strange enough we find people complaining still. coaching institutes all over INDIA had been crying hoarse over this particular point that this year's CAT would be checking your temperament along side skills for solving papers with agility. THAT IS THE SOLE REASON WE find the exam patterns in the so called mock tests getting entirely shifted to a more moderate difficulty level rather than what these tests were supposed to be. WE FAILED TO GET THE HINT. THE ONLY THING WE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT IS TO ARRANGE FOR ANOTHER TESTING SLOT FOR THOSE EXAMINEES WHO COULDN'T TAKE THEIR EXAMS. SO HOW COME EVERYONE START CRYING HOARSE FOR ANOTHER RETEST? DON'T WE ALL WISH FOR A RETEST EVERYTIME, WHEN WE COMEOUT AFTER TAKING ANY MOCK PAPERS. BUT THATS NOT USUALLY THE CASE. ONCE YOU HAVE SUBMITTED YOUR COPY IT HAS BEEN SENT FOR EVALUATION. BEST WISHES. THANKS.

    • anonymous @ Daemyn, The fees for CAT 2009 is not much less than that for GMAT/GRE. Consider this: TOEFL - Approx. $ 130 (Valid for 2 years) GRE - Approx. $ 180 (Valid for 5 years) GMAT - Approx. $250 (Valid for 5 years) CAT ??? Approx. $30, Valid for 1 year. Every year, the fees for CAT goes up. Fees comparisons may not be valid in this case because the test standards, reporting complexities, Salaries for employees and all are different. It was just incompetence / gross mis-management.

N finally all ma strategy went wrong just in an attempt 2 maximize ma overall attempt after seeing cent percent attempts by my other peers.... the whole strategy which i used 2 take mock tests went against d one in d final exam..... Dat was an aweful experience.....

    • Sandy.Rai tell u what, online MAT is much-much easier and simpler than online CAT. seriously, i felt online CAT was not user friendly. the way the whole online CAT was organized, it made the atmosphere much tensed. fear of prometric server, the errors and system freeze issues made me feel even more worse. we never knew what would happen when u click any button on the screen. unlike online CAT, online MAT was much better. i could jump from question 1 to question 32 easily. only one click was required. in CAT, i was forced to click the Next button repeatedly. on the whole, i am dissatisfied the way online CAT was conducted.
