Hi,
I have been a member of PG and this year, I had taken a decision to join PGSEM program at IIM-B. I have 7 yrs of work ex in the IT industry and this is indeed a good course for ppl who have good amount of work ex in IT. And this course is not focussed on IT management, as the title might suggest !!

Well, one of the quarters is over...we have a quarter system with 3 courses per quarter. The first year has 13 core courses and from second year onwards, the electives start and go on for the next 6 quarters.

We've had Strategy, Microeconomics and Financial Accounting in the first quarter and this quarter we have Macroeconomics, Managing Organizations and Quantitative Methods...things are pretty good with some of the best profs teaching in class.

Let me know if someone is interested in knowing about this program and other info. There is a Yahoo group also PGSMInfo where you can post your queries and will definitely get a response from current students + pgsem alumni.

Cheers,
Amit

Hi Amit,

I have few quesries. I hope you can help me.

1. I am not able to find the syllabus for PGSEM which is scheduled to be conducted on March-19, 2006 at bangalore at Chennai. Is the pattern along the same lines as CAT?

2. I will have work experience of about 22 months by June 2006. Out of which 10 months in call-centre industry and 12 months in IT industry. Will I be eligible for selection?

3. What is placement status after PGSEM?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Amit,

I have about 3 years of work ex in the S/W industry @ Wipro Technologies, all of them in the capacity of a Technical writer. What is the breadth of industries offering placements @ the PGSEM course and what are the approx starting salaries ?

Hi,
1. PGSEM test is on the lines of CAT. I am not really sure abt the syllabus as I had taken admission through CAT. But I guess preparation on the lines of CAT will definitely help.

2. I believe that PGSEM requires 24 months of work ex on the date of joining. Anything less than this is not allowed. But I would request you to confirm this with PGSEM office before taking a call.

3. There are no placements offered for any student in PGSEM. IIM-B doesnt provide placements for PGSEM students. It is an industry sponsored program.

Thanks,
Amit

hi...

I am a fresher in the IT industry, just joined Oracle SSI at Bangalore - i wud like to know how is the PGSEM prog conducted...in the sense how are the timings on weekends etc - by wat nature is it part time, full time and so on...also once the company sponsors u for it, u also have to sign a bond to remain with ur sponsoring company for another 2-3 years - this is wat i have heard bout it...is this true? - must be, as the company sponsors u for the course...

Ashish

Hi Ashish,
You need 2 yrs of work ex to join PGSEM. You can visit the PGSEM webpage on IIM-B website. It will give you a lot of information that you require. If the company you are working for is going to sponsor your fees, then it is quite likely that there is going to be a bond. I would suggest that you check with your HR about the exact specifics of this bond !

Cheers,
Amit

I thought I could update this here...

A team of five members from PGSEM-2005 batch are going to represent IIM-Bangalore at John Molson International Case Competition, Corcordia University, Canada.

i am having a total work ex of 4 years with 2 years as a lecturer and 2 as a bank officer in a public sector bank.... what do you recommed for me..... and what is the procedure

Oh yeah.....
Just the thread I was looking for.
I am currently working in bangalore and seriously interested in the PGSEM program at IIMB.I plan to bell the CAT in 2006 and get into the PGSEM program.

Amit could you kindly tell me how strenous is the course and what is covered as part of the program?

Hi,
PGSEM requires the candidates to be from IT background. I would recommend tht you check with the PGSEM office to find out if you are eligible for the program.

Regards,
Amit

Hi Murtuza,
The course is quite strenous and requires a lot of effort from an individual's end, if one is really sincere towards learning. You need to balance work, family and MBA. Friday it half day till 1 PM or 11:45 depending on your section. There is one section which has classes from 8 AM to 1 PM on both days and the other section has classes from 8 AM to 11:45 AM on Fri and 8 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturday.

The course contents are available at IIM-B's website. As for me, my first quarter is over and Microeconomics, Strategy and Financial Accounting are over. Now in this second quarter, it is Macroeconomics, Organization Theory and Quantitative Methods -1 are there. The Profs are really good...and we have got some of the best faculty that one could get in India.

If you have specific questions, you can post them here. I will try to answer them. Or there is a yahoogroup PGSMINFO. You can subscribe to that. You will get lot of inputs there as a lot of PGSM Alumni and current students are registered there.

Cheers,
Amit

Hi,
I am actually having 2 yrs exp in software.. i am bit confused about the prospects of this course.. as you are persuing this course can you help me out how can i leverage from this course ? Means is it better to persue it after reaching some position such as TL or PL.. or as a software engineer also i can pursue it ? How do the companies normally reward to employees in terms of position after completion of this course ? It would be really great if you can help me out with these queries... Thanks in advance... :)

hi Amit

i'd like to know what appr. CAT % reqd for PGSEM and also some info regd GD/PI.is it focussed on ur work(IT) part?

Hi,
I am not sure abt the cut-offs, but I believe that a good % will definitely lead u to the interview. There might have been cases of ppl with lower percentiles (early 90s) would have been admitted, but mostly based on the no of experiences that one has. Also, there is another PGSEM test and GMAT that ppl apply with. So it is better to have a good percentile.

There was no GD till last year. And interview is quite grilling just like any other interview. So a good preparation is always recommended.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

thanks amit.that was really helpful

I am a NRI residing in US.
currently working as a tech lead.
My qualifications: B.E Electronics (74%) + 10 yrs IT
exp

Am interested to further my career by doing the MBA
program . I would be glad if my questions are
answered at the earliest.

I am planning to apply for the pgsem crse through the
GMAT
process,my questions are
q1: is there a specific time period to take the
GMAT for applying to PGSEM ?
q2: will a GMAT taken during 2001 or 2002 still hold
good for application or do i have to take the test
again for 2005/06 ?
q3: does iimb have a gmat score cut off reqd. for
selection ?
q4: what are they really expecting from the candidates
during PIs, any specific areas, do i have to brush up my engg
contents or will the job exp suffice ? are the pgsm interviews a tough nut to crack ?
q5: do they conduct GDs for pgsems ?

pls reply,
thanks in advance,

For details abt when to appear for GMAT and other details, please contact PGSM office. They will be able to help you.

For the PI, u need to justify why do you want to do MBA and are u ready to meet the challenges, cause the course is very challenging.

There is no GD, as of now.

Hi,

I am an IT professional with over 5 years of experience.
Over these years in teh industry I have acquired knowledge on Credit card industry.
I would like to do an MBA course in Finance.
Could you please suggest me options on the courses as well as the career paths that can be selected after that.

Regards,
Abhishek

Hi,
I dont think that you need to be a PL/TL to get into this course. You need to show the aptitude and determination to enter and it depends on your abilities as you go through the course.

If you really ask me, no company is going to give any weightage to you having an MBA. Neither does IIM give any guarantee that after doing your MBA, you will get a promotion or any other sort of benefit. An MBA just educates you in the various aspects of Business like Accounting, Finance, Costing, Budgeting, Organization Behavior, Modelling, Law, Marketing etc. After you complete your MBA, your abilities to fit into an organization and prove to your organization that you are capable of a higher role matters a lot. MBA is just another educational qualification you get.

Now companies/organizations have certain perceptions about the quality of education/students in a particular institution which may or maynot be the true representation of the skills of the students in that institution. But over the years these perceptions either change or solidify. So doing your MBA from a good institution always helps.

I hope I have given you some gyan on the questions you asked :D

Cheers,
Amit
