I got inspired to start this thread as I faced questions on guitar in one of my interviews. all guitarists on pagalguy can come together and discuss everything related to guitar. we can also discuss the different genres in music i.e rock, progressive rock, punk rock, metallic rock, jazz, blues. We can also chit-chat about favorite bands and guitarists as well as legendary musicians.

I encountered question on guitar and unfortunately I was not prepared that much. they asked me questions like;

.) what is most important in a guitar?
.) what is the functioning of the big hole (slang) present in a guitar?
.) Can we play guitar without a pick?
.) How is sound produced in a guitar?
.) Who is your favorite guitarist?
.) which genre do you listen to?
.) how come if we press a particular fret, different sound is played? give me engineering point of view.
.) What is the basic difference between an acoustic guitar and electric guitar?

nice to see such a thread...evn i was plannin to do a research on guitar pertainin to my forthcoming interviews

nice thread and thanks for the set of questions up there. Anyways follower of Buckethead \m/

I encountered question on guitar and unfortunately I was not prepared that much. they asked me questions like;

.) what is most important in a guitar?

Every part is as important as the rest.
.) what is the functioning of the big hole (slang) present in a guitar?

It creates resonance and thus amplifies the weak sound produced by the strings. The shape and volume of the hollow body also affects the quality of sound.
.) Can we play guitar without a pick?

Yep. Sound tends to get mellower in doing so.
.) How is sound produced in a guitar?

Strings vibrate > The sound goes into the hollow body > the hollow body vibrates and resonates > thus the big sound is produced by the body and not the strings.
.) Who is your favorite guitarist?

Joe Satriani!! I like John Petrucci too. Though a few micrometers below Satch in the fav guitarists list.
.) which genre do you listen to?

Where there is awesome lead solo/ guitarist, i am there.
.) how come if we press a particular fret, different sound is played? give me engineering point of view.

When we pluck a string, it vibrates. The length of the vibrating part of the string (L) spans from the fixed end (bridge) and the fret we are holding. Thus frequency changes.
As per string vibration theory, frequency f= (1/2L) where L= length of vibrating part of the string, T- tension in the string (constant for each string, ~6 kg under standard tuning), u- linear density (again, a constant for each string).
For a note in two octaves, eg- 12th fret E and open E, frequency ratio is 2:1. Hence the frequency between two consecutive frets differ by 2^(1/12).
.) What is the basic difference between an acoustic guitar and electric guitar?

In an acoustic guitar, sound is produced by resonance of the hollow body and sound is very audible without the need for electric amplification.
In an electric guitar, sound is generated by electromagnetic emf.
String vibrates in the magnetic field set up by the pickup magnet > It causes fluctuations in the magnetic field > This fluctuation gets picked up by the coils of wire wound around the magnet. Appears as electric signal at the output. We need electric amplification for sound reproduction.

Hey,
Nice Thread. Will be helpful to get to know questions which can be asked if playing Guitar is your hobbie.

@ aspcat,......nice job out there dude. Though I answered these answers partially, the panel grilled me on each and every answer. But had I answered the questions like you, i would have banged them. It was my experience at IIT-kanpur IME.

what a thread ! i dint even know it !! guys i too play guitar and if anyone has queries sure post them ! i also give classes to students !

visit my blog www.guitarbyrahul.blogspot.com

i too pitched my guitar skills in the gd but they dint ask anything !! :)...

Aha.. IIT! They tested ur engineering skills!
Good luck for the results mate. :cheerio:

sorry i meant the PI ... pardon me !

@veeru889..... I am also a beginner guitarist for last one year because of these preps.... Neways, what I think that once you are through with the guitar basics, you have to do three things. Practice, practice and practice. 😁

Have you watched this video? If not, look at the way his right as well as left hand moves. Now that's technical guitar playing!
YouTube - guitar shred

And John Petrucci's shredding in the song Stream of Consciousness? As they say, he loves to see people drop dead on the floor as he plays a billion notes per second. Hail Petrucci! :)

i was asked the following questions in the interviews
1)types of guitar-spanish and havain(though bass is also one i missed)
2)wat is havain guitar-(d one played wid a bar, rubbed on the string)

Hehe.. Thanks bro.. for asking me this question. (I'm no expert on playing guitars, btw )

Hawaiian guitars are the ones we keep on our lap and play. Pink Floyd used to use it's modified version a lot. It is kept horizontal on our laps and instead of using our left hand fingers to fret, we use a slide. much like a horizontal blade.. Pink Floyd's song High Hopes has a wonderful solo using slide guitar..

Spanish guitar is the usual acoustic guitar.

Hi

Thank you for posting this thread. As important as it is to know about music...it is equally important to have a technical knowhow of the instrument one plays, in this case the guitar..i have just started learning how to play the guitar and would love to know more about the basics of a guitar and tips on how to make the learning of this instrument fast and easy..

Thanks

@aspcat .. spanish guitar is not an accoustic guitar buddy !
I would like to explain the types of guitar we usually use .
1. accoustic --
1.a cut away
1.b semi acoustic
1.c classical acoustic
2.electric
2.a electric (6 string)
2.b bass ( 4 - 6 strings )
3. Jazz
4. spanish/classical
5. Hawaiaan

there are other customized types but these are the ones we normally see.

difference between spanish and acoustic .
1 . spanish has nylon string , acoustic has steel strings.
2. spanish has a broad fretboard.
3. spanish is usually played by finger picking.
4. the arrangement of the tuning machine is different as compared to acoustic and also the arrangement of the bridge .

@all ... i humble request to all .. i play guitar and truly respect it .. if any one us doesnt know anything its always better to deny than to give false information ..

Any further queries do lemme know .
