Hi ...
This thread is for all those who have a deep love for Dogs and are trainers themselves / interested in dog training, involve themselves actively (or passively) in pet adoption /relocation .

Post your experiences, ambitions on the same !!

About me :

i am an avid pet lover !! My experience with my first dog (a male fawn labarador) forced me to rethink why people needed pets !! My experiences with the dog introduced me to Dog trainers and breeders !! My experience with them was unique, although many had training methods I would never approve of -i was slowly enthused in dog training !! I would still call myself a amateur trainer !! I love dogs . I usually help my freind's with training their own dogs and its fun !! This is one of my favorite hobbies !!

I presume that this thread would attract only a few puys as i believe not many invollve in training but am sure a lot of puys are involved in saving pets, giving them a new home etc ....

The thread is open for all pet-savvy puys !!:

P.S : MODS - am not sure if such a thread is allowed in PG !!! But I believe ,if social service is allowed in PG ,this too will be -as pets form a part of our society !!

Hmmm....No Reply to this thread !! :devil

I am sure that everyone would come across Mongrel Indian Dogs in streets everyday !! Nowadays it has become a fashion to own "Breed Dogs" in our homes mostly ~ branding has got to DOGS too !!
Labradors and PUGS form the majority of Indian pets compared to our Native Indian breeds !!

I am no exception and i have had a Labrador and a Rat terrier ~ for those who don't know what the second one is pls GOOGLE 😛

People owning breeds would have certainly heard of DOG Training!! We Indians are usually adept in domesticating animals but nowadays the surge in the amount and Quality of "Foreign Breeds" have made this a "decent profession" mainly for the breeders !!

For all those who are totally new to this concept, pls see videos of the "Caesar Milan " and his Dog training methods~ (many of which i don't approve of 😛 ) .For those who love spending time with dogs, its just fun to train your dog to give you a hand shake ,or to fetch you, your newspaper or bike keys

Enough said ,there are a lot of activities going around everywhere for PET adoption ~ BLUE CROSS is a known organisation for this but there is a spurt in the number of local enthusiasts who volunteer to provide a better life to the innumerable stray pets ~ Do try visiting pages of "Chennai Adoption Drive " and "Bangalore Adoption Drive " in FB .

.....(to be cont)

Today morning , just as i was coming out of my locality on my bike ,I happened to see a beast ~ yes,I saw a Rottweiler ,handsome and devilish !! For all those ,who had been with dogs ,they would have read fascinating stories about this breed of dog ,the associated "killer instinct" of this breed !! They have also been banned in different localities for they have been associated with a lot of fatal accidents related with humans !!

But,i dont believe in this !! These are one of the most majestic of breeds ~ the sitting posture is next only to the majesty of a fawn colored labarador and a Doberman with its ear marked upwards !!
Rottweilers are muscular and become very difficult to manage if you train them badly !!

P.S: I had a fawn coloured Labrador, which was extremely muscular. For all those who say that LABs are the best breed ,i have a contradicting story ~ my LAb was very mischievous (at the beginning) which turned into a killer instinct (should say beginner level ) ~ It started developing its own ways ,i found it very difficult to establish a master relationship with the dog ~ It killed my own birds (which is natural for an untrained dog ) but it developed into a nasty habit of putting its mouths and paws on anything moving ~

Thats a big story and to cut it short,i would summarize this with this famous info which DOG owners should know, "There is never a thing called as a bad dog !! There are only bad owners "

I don't have any love for mongrels, I prefer feeding them to the Koreans & the Chinese..especially the strays, to clear the streets of rabid dog bites! I hope Maneka's not around.;);) Personally I love the endangered tigers, dogs won't go extinct for the next few generations at least.

ha !! Gr8 to see a fellow PUY with a taste for pets !!
Hi

I train dogs mainly using methods of positive reinforcement and correction ~ and hence it should be easy for you to infer that I train puppies a lot !!

Regarding training methods ,depends on what I want to accomplish with the dog ~ for starters I have found "clicker' to be very effective on puppies and adults alike !! many of the training objectives can be easily accomplished with proper positioning of the leash (if people prefer to leash train), although i personally feel commanding a dog without a leash is the best way and it gives you with a lot of freedom !! I had used leash primarily as a way of disciplining my dogs and my dogs are usually free to roam and I prefer not to chain them either ~ except for my LAB !!

Clicker is effective with labs? where do you get to buy it online, bcos my locality doesnt have a decent pet shop nearby..i too have a lab and i want it trained before it goes too wayward.

"Clicker " is actually a tool intended to create a sound which the dog needs to associate with an action it needs to do ~ You do not need a "clicker" to do a clicker training ~ you just have to emulate it !!

A vocal sound ,a snap using ur fingers ,a tap using ur boot on the floor ~ anything can be good - the only thing is that u should associate the sound with the action which u want the dog to do !!

I did not associate the "click" sound with any action ~ i just used it to grab its attention -when i make a click sound ,my dog would see me immediately and come to me !!

I had a challenge with my bro and I trained my "rat terrier" to "shake hands" in 10 minutes using "clicker" method !! (bad that i don't have both my dogs with me now , but their memories remain )

YES !! clicker works on any dog - it will work on a LAB !!
BTW, train ur LAB -it will become the best pet !!

Am pleased to find an ardent dog lover 😛
I am one of those mortals who has big dreams of eradicating animal cruelty and to provide food n shelter to all the stray dogs. Alas! these vil remain only dreams considering a country like ours which is populated with street dogs and beggars(I've often been told that I care more 4 animals than humans, which is true, since animals r helpless creatures who cant earn money for food etc)

Anyway, wot I want to add here is dat, I have adopted street dogs multiple times in d past since I genuinely feel dat in dis day and age, people tend to focus more on expensive n high quality breeds and neglect the common breeds who actually need a home and loving care. And my experience tells me dat these dogs r no different from the other breeds, but of course, if u want only great looking dogs then it's a different story.

Recently I adopted a street pup( nw 6 months old) since I wanted a companion and gave her all the usual vaccinations. Though I'm not very gud with the training thing, my dog is bright and usually fetches her toys whenever I tell her to. Moreover, when she's bored, she brings her toy near me and sit there until I play wid her. I allow her to sleep wid me and its funny hw she imitates me while sleeping :).

I feed her pedigree and biscuits, sometimes rice with eggs and boiled vegetables. But she had an indigestion a few days bek(may b due to rice) and started vomiting. So, it vil b of great help if I can be advised on the types of food that I can give her other than pedigree(she gets bored of it).

Love to all the animal lovers...

Hey,

Good to see some discussion on pets here.

I have always been a dog lover but unfortunately never had a pet at home. Though i try to give food to stray dogs around my house. I happen to hear about 2 NGO's who are working to help the stray dogs and are more involved in their adoption.

1)Red Paws Rescue,Delhi
2)Friendicoes, Delhi

I recently visited Friendicoes, Delhi which is a shelter home for our four legged friends who are either homeless/stray or are left unattended by their owners. I was overwhelmed to see the kind of work that this institution is doing. They actually do not believe in mating or buying of dogs but truly in adoption of these homeless animals.

I personally have made it a point to visit the place whenever i am able to find time and also plan to visit Red paws rescue soon.

I thought of sharing this and spread the word around. A small step which may help some of these animals.

Havent been able to have a pet due to some unavoidable personal reasons and hopefully will adopt a pet soon. Yayy!!

Thanks,
GJ

Had 3 dogs since kidhood.
1. A Roadasian :)
2. A mountain terrier
3. An Irish Setter.

One thing I can tell about dogs that dogs are the most perfect creatures on earth. Everything about them is so good. It's only their lifespan that hurts! :(
I personally believe(don't know if I am sounding spiritual or not but) all dogs go to heaven.

Presently I am friend to a lot of stray-dogs out in my locality. Loves a lot spending time with them. Amazing creatures are they.

Subscribing to the thread.......

Nice thread...

My two cents

I just moved out of Chennai, had been there for almost two years. So adding to the list of well known dog welfare organizations, there is a small initiative called The Pound based out of Chennai. You can follow their FB page. And Blue Cross is obviously there. So puys from chennai wanting pets, request you to visit these places atleast once before deciding. They keep having adoption drives .

There couldn't be anything better than offering a home to a stray but even if you think you aren't ready for it yet, and want the more "safer" and tried and tested 'Pedigreed' pup , even then please avoid breeders who are willing to push off 30-35 day old pups to your homes. I was rather appalled by the nasty dog trade business people have set up in chennai and I'm sure it's the same scenario in other cities as well. The only reason such are able to run their shop is because people are willing to buy. So please read up , become aware ,spread awareness and happy petting

It is extremely coincidental and good that i found this post on pg as i was already curious about friendicoes. I would like you to tell me if you know anything about their volunteer programs. I have a few months of time this year and i would like to volunteer with a dog shelter or ngo in ncr. Any kind of volunteer position would do, as long as i get to work with them. Since you have been there, maybe you can help me out here :)

Thanks
Waiting for reply 😃

Hey @9999mansi,

Im sure our friends will love to have you there.... :))...All the best..

Thanks,
GJ

Hey,

I visited Friendicoes today. For becoming a volunteer you need to first speak to the concerned person and fill up a form with the necessary details and what are some of the activities that you would like to volunteer for. Some of the activities include taking the pets for a walk, helping them with their chores, help in cleaning the shelter, giving them food etc.

I tried getting a form for myself but unfortunately couldnt get it. In case you need further details do let me know.

Thanks,
GJ
