Hi All,

Is Distance Learning MBA in IT a good option from Welingkar?
Does distance learning have good market value for people with work experience?

Hi,

I have a query regarding distance education. My friend completed her PGDBM from Symbiosis University via distance learning. Now she needs an equivalency stating it is equivalent to an MBA. Can anyone guide us regarding this and how to get it?

Regards,
Lisa

Hi all,

Let me introduce myself to start with. I am Nilesh D and I am an Assistant Project Manager in an IT firm in Pune with 9 yrs of experience. I am interested in a MBA to give me the boost to get into Senior Management roles.

1) I am not looking to switch industries. I like IT. :)
2) From what I know right now, I would prefer a part time course as I would like to continue with my job and that means Executive MBAs are out. (unless there are part time executive MBAs?)

What are my options?
I know of a IIM-C course that happens over video conferencing but I will keep all my options open.

Thanks in advance!
Nilesh

Hi

I have a work ex of 3.5 years in telecom industry and want to go for a MBA course.(Appeared in CAT last year but could not convert the call from SP Jain and now enough of it). My constraint with executive MBA is that I can attend classes on weekend only as my office timings dont allow me to attend the weekday classes. So I m thinking of enrolling myself into some correspondence course.

As for now I m aware of correspondence MBA from SYMBIOSIS only.

Can u plz help me with following information:
1) Other options for Correspondence MBA
2) Any executive/Part time MBA which satisfy my constraints
3) Any other better option which you can suggest me ?

Thanks

Hey Folks,

Require your suggestions on the various post graduate/executive/certificate courses offered by IIM's (EPBMs - 1 year - no diploma/masters) , XLRI, IIFT, XIM etc via video conferencing/NIIT/HugesNet.

What is the market value of these courses in Bangalore? Will they add value with respect to job opportunities?

Is it better to go for an MBA(NMIMS/Christ/TASMAC(University of Wales)/Symbiosis/Manipal/TAPMI -- Weekend MBAs) from any institute or Executive courses offered by Top institutes mentioned above.

Pls suggest.

Abhishek

Does distance learning have good market value for people with work experience?

In my opinion, No.

It would add value only if your organization just needs a MBA degree under your name for internal promotions. However, in terms of knowledge i dont find it to be a good value addition to people with work experience. ( PS: This is just my opinion on distance learning MBA in IT )

Please try contacting SIU people, they could help you in this regard.

Hi

In addition to IIM-C course that you have mentioned, you can check out similar courses for part time MBA on sites of following colleges:

1. Symbiosis International University
2. Punjab University
3. FMS Delhi ( weekend classes )
4. DMS- IIT Delhi
5. XLRI / IIFT ( through video conferencing )

Hi

Suggest to try for Part Time MBA offered by FMS, Delhi above all other options for correspondence MBA. FMS Delhi needs one to attend classes only on weekends.

Second option for part time MBA through weekend classes is Punjab University.

For correspondence MBA, you can also go for Manipal University, IGNOU etc. but again SIU is the best option among these.

Hope this helps!

Please post this query on MH-CET 2012 thread for appropiate response.
Hey Folks,

What is the market value of these courses in Bangalore? Will they add value with respect to job opportunities?

Whether to go for Executive MBA from top colleges or regular MBA from other B-Schools mentioned by you depends on your career goals.

If you want a switch in industry then regular MBA would help you more and if you want to continue in your current industry, then Executive MBA from top colleges is a decent option to go for.

As far as market value is concerned, it is there but the importance given to distance/correspondence MBA varies from company to company and not city wise.

They would definitely add job opportunities though but to a limited extent.

Hi Guys,
Does it holds any kind of value in market ? How good will it be for the career growth ? Will it be easier for me to transition from IT to HR and maintaining the same kind of position with the company ?

Hi

With the amount of work ex you have in IT, i am afraid that distance MBA in HR wont add much value in terms of enabling you to switch to a position in HR domain that is almost parallel to your current in IT domain. However it might help you in transition to HR but it also depends on your company policies. Major reason being as far as i know leading IT companies prefer to have regular MBAs in HR dept. as well , though you might find distance MBA people as well but not immediately at higher positions.

I am interested in part time mba from nmims .So i have following query regarding that:-

1)Is it really a good value-addition to my profile?
2)What is the fee structure for the course?
3)When are the classes conducted ?.Like twice or thrice a week .
4)Do they give placements for even part time mba students?

Thanks
Mohit

Hi

I would also like information about the above options. Is a video conferencing course from an IIM better than a weekend MBA from say Symbi?

From what I understand, for part-time MBA, these are the options
1) Video Conferencing courses (EPBMs mostly)

Pros
- Conducted by big brand names like IIMs, XLRI etc.
- Can be attended from any city.
- 1 yr courses

Cons
- Not as rigorous as weekend classes (Can somebody confirm?)
- Possibly more expensive than weekend classes?

Query
- How do they compare with weekend classes in terms of value addition?

2) Weekend/Weekday physical classes

Pros and Cons are really opposites of Video Conferencing.

3) Distance Learning - No classes. Completely based on course ware.

Pros
- Can do it from any city.
- Leeway in terms of course duration
- Much cheaper

Cons
- No exposure as such
- Not much value addition to the career (?)

If anybody can expand on these lines and provide input, it would be great.

Thank you
Nilesh

Sorry for flooding this thread but it will be awesome if somebody could gave any inputs about the IIM C EPBM program in particular - Executive Program in Business Management- EPBM Batch 16 | Hughes

This program is starting pretty soon and I would like to know anything at all that helps me decide whether this program is helpful for my career at this juncture. (9 yrs, Asst. PM, IT, No wish to switch industries).

Thanks a lot
Nilesh

What i understood is this ::

IIMC/XLRI/IIFT/Rests/Other EPBMs ( Video Conference) - is a program of 1 year .Its not equivalent to MBA as this is not a Diploma/masters program. Its kinds a certification program. They also run on weekends.

Weekend MBAs(NMIMS/Manipal in Bangalore) - Program for mostly 18 months onwards .Conducted in weekends. Will give u diploma/masters degree.

Correspondance(IMT/SIU) - using correnspondance..will give u Diploma/masters... comparatively cheaper.Value is questionable.

Please respond !!

Please also let me know what are the options available for Weekend MBAs in Bangalore ???
One I know is NMIMS Bangalore. Let me know the rests ??

Hi Nilesh,

I am under the same dilemma of whether to go in for this 1 yr EPBM program from IIMC. Just wondering if it would be worth the money (approx 3L).

At the face of it, it looks quite appropriate as you have 9 yrs experience. The only other option for people with as much experience is going in for a full time 1 yr Exec MBA from top institutes like IIM, XLRI, ISB

I knew a person who had pursued an Exec satellite program from IIMC and he seemed pretty satisfied. The greatest value is the IIM name! There would be learning (I am sure) but not same as full time resedential programs..

Do let me know of your decision and any further thoughts.

All the best!

Hi all,

The update from my end is that IIM C is now conducting an entrance test (basic math) from this year onwards and it was held on 5th Feb (EPBM - Batch 17).
I have given the test and the results are to be announced in 10-15 days.

Considering everything and my profile, I have decided to go ahead with this course (if I get selected). To be honest, the cost is a little high making it less value for money but I am looking at it as an investment that will, hopefully, give returns later in life. The course content is pretty satisfactory from what I heard.

Thanks
Nilesh

I agree. In my case, being in Pune, I think the only weekend MBA option was Symbiosis and I have heard its pretty rigorous. Given other commitments, the fact that IIM is a better brand and it doesn't have any IT/Systems major, I am hoping to the do the EPBM.

If i opt for EPGP programs from various iim's...Will it help me to find a good job??and will it be mentioned in the diploma about this long distance program?

Hi all!
I completed my graduation, i.e., BBA(G) from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in 2011. After that i filled forms for many competitive exms - MAT, CAT, XAT, IBSAT and SNAP.
I got 88 percentile in sept MAT (valid upto Sept 2012).
XAT 2012- 64 percentile
and got a call from ICFAI.

Earlier i was sure to do a regular MBA... and from the options what I have best is icfai.
But somebody told me that one of his friends had gone for MBA from Icfai, hyderabad and hasn't got any placement. The person suggested me to join a job and do MBA thru correspondence so that i dnt have any burden on me of paying back loan and searching for a job after wasting 2 years of my life.

What wil u people suggest me?
Does distance learning has value in market?
If yes, which is the best institute/university for the same?

I have many friends from ICFAI, Hyderabad and they are well-placed. So, if you get ICFAI, Hyderabad, then join it.
