Hey puys.......

Surprise to see no thread on actuarial science so starting one right now.
For newbies,something abt actuarial science....
Actuary is one of the most respected field in the world and now gaining ground rapidly in India.Actuaries add value by enabling businesses and individuals to make better informed decisions, with a clearer view of the likely range of financial outcomes from different future events....basically a finance field
actuaries are the highest paid professionals in the world,a freshly qualified actuary is likely to receive an average pay of around $100 thousand per annum in UK/USA and Rs. 18 lacs in India. As a trainee the students can expect their stipend to start at Rs.50,000 per month in India.
A degree in actuarial science provides a zero unemployment profession.
The fact of how difficult it is to be an actuary(FASI) is explained that there are only around 132 actuaries in India since 1944.
To get more info, visit www.actuariesindia.org official website of the actuarial society of India which awards the FASI degree.
Eligibility to become a student of ASI is just 12th pass with min 85% or above in maths.....
So anyone in this field or planning to get in,pls post....

hi, can you tell how u preparing for ct-3? is bks provided by asi suffecient?

Sorry about restarting this old discussion but,

"actuaries are the highest paid professionals in the world,a freshly qualified actuary is likely to receive an average pay of around $100 thousand per annum in UK/USA and Rs. 18 lacs in India. As a trainee the students can expect their stipend to start at Rs.50,000 per month in India."

-
Not totally , before the Financial crisis investment bankers were highly paid due to their bonuses.

"A degree in actuarial science provides a zero unemployment profession.

The fact of how difficult it is to be an actuary(FASI) is explained that there are only around 132 actuaries in India since 1944."

- Fellowship or associateship with a actuarial society/institution with 4+ work exp. or 4-9 CT papers and 2+ work exp with a MSc. or Deg or maybe post grad in Act.Sci. = 0 unemployment , possibly in this job market.

These exams are supposed to be the most difficult in the world. why??, i don't know. Those with a math background and a strong interest for math and analysis would say Financial engineering is better( or being a Quant). It takes 8+ years to qualify. You have to work and pass exams.I've read the upper exam material of CAS (as much as i could find- exams 5, 6, 7) and its not very mathematical. But the CT series is totally mathematical. Its true a few with little math background have passed these exams( i really can't describe how they managed as i've researched the math) and those with strong math backgrounds find it difficult.

"Eligibility to become a student of ASI is just 12th pass with min 85% or above in maths....."

-Not necessarily , Even a B.com student by passing 1 SOA/CAS exam can be a member without getting 85% in 10+2 ( but 85% is a good indicator to employers in passing maximum papers in least amount of time).

About me- I'm an avg person ( 60% in all Acads), as avg as can be. How do i know all this?? i used google.

Hi,
I'm venturing into actuarial science and planning to take up Nov 2009 exams conducted by Institute of Actuaries, India. I'll probably start with CT-1 and CT-3.

Would like to see more people out here who are interested in actuarial certification. With respect to that, I have few queries:

1. I can go for it on basis of 12th(85% in maths) or Engg. (not with MBA(fin) as I'm still pursuing it). Does the eligibility criteria make a difference?

2. Does doing the certification from Institute of Actuaries of UK/Canada/US/Australia make a huge difference? How is IAI's global positioning?

Cheers!

Hello Guys, does anybody know, how long (how many months/years) does it normally take to get the fellowship from ASI. I'm planning directly to join ASI and not do the full time courses in the other institutes as I would like to continue working.
