XLRI GMP placement sees pre-recession glory

With as many as 36 candidates of the batch of 97 having been able to change roles at the recently concluded placements of XLRI's one-year full-time General Management Programme (GMP) one felt that the heady days of placements of the pre-recession period of 2006-2007 was almost back.

According to Prof Madhukar Shukla who teaches OB & Strategic Management at the XLRI School of Business & Human Resources, while 17 per cent students could successfully make a shift to a different sector/industry than that they belonged to previously, around 38% students were able to change roles.
Started in 1997, XLRI's full-time one-year flagship GMP programme is claimed to be the oldest in the country and is only open to students having minimum of 5 years' quality managerial work experience.
Notable shifts at placements were made by doctors in the batch who were able to switch from medical practice to bagging leading managerial roles in the health sector.

Also many students from the IT sector were able to shift from conventional programming and project management roles to business manager/consultant's roles.

Other remarkable industry shifts noticed had been in the case of two students belonging to the IT sector who were offered roles in operations in a large retail group and in corporate sales/marketing in a leading music label respectively.

Further, several students from core sectors made a shift to IT as domain/subject matter experts/consultants.

The salaries being offered to the batch also saw a huge jump as compared to last year, with the highest salary offered being Rs 30 lakh whereas the average for the batch stood at Rs 15 lakh per annum.

The GMP placements also saw an increasing trend of corporates hiring for senior management positions.
Prominent among the corporates who took part at the B-School's GMP placements included names like Google, MindTree, SAP, Accenture, IBM, HCL, HP, Mahindra Satyam, Tech Mahindra, Wirpo, TCS, Future Group, Apollo Hospitals, Infosys, Applabs, Daimler, Exide, Genpact, Tata Motors, etc.

A break-up of the placements showed that as much as 57 percent of the batch size of 97 opted for IT & ITES sector, 9 per cent for energy & infrastructure sectors, 8per cent for the manufacturing sector, 6per cent for healthcare sector, 6 per centfor banking & financial services sector while the balance 14per cent opted for other sectors.
In terms of salary, while around 7% of the batch settled for an annual salary of Rs 18 lakh and above, 29per cent bagged an annual pay packet between Rs 15 to 18 lakh, 35% would be getting between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 15 lakh while the balance 29 per cent would be receiving compensation between Rs 10 to 12 lakh per annum.

Of the B-School's GMP batch of 97 students only 82 participated at the actual placements as 15 went back to join their previous organisations at elevated positions.

Wow. Thats very good news !!!

ADVENTURE TRIP: XLRI GMP

No pain! No gain! This couldn't be truer! We just found this out on our outbound adventure trip.
We constantly read about team building - how important it is for the functioning of a team. This outbound trip gave all of us a chance to put all this into practise.
The entire division was divided into teams of 7 to 8 players. Each of these teams was pitted against each other in different tasks like raft building, obstacle course, etc. These tasks demanded supreme mental and physical fitness from every team member.

Each task required proper planning so that the execution would be up to the mark. And on the field every member had to put in their best so that his or her team had the best finish. The camaraderie we saw between team members was exceptional. eg. In the obstacle course certain team leaders returning back to help other slower team members. Everyone tried to give his best for the team. Some people suffered injuries in the process but they saw to that they finished the obstacle course. The effort put in by people was just amazing! It was team spirit at its best!

Hi guys,
if I plan to apply for GMP@XL, do we need to specify the GMAT code of XLRI while taking GMAT ?
Is the process same as any other foreign MBA university ? If I fail to do that, will I have to pay more than the usual application fee, while applying for the course ?
Also can someone throw some light on the admission process start dates ?

The adventure trip looks very interesting :)

Rishimad, Nikunj - where are you guys? cant see you in the pics...

Hi,
ttin, regarding the GMAT score it is not a compulsion to report it officially, at least it was not so last year. They need the original copy of the score card. Also, the application process starts somewhere by the end of Sept or the beginning of October. Keep checking the xlri website for details.

Vikram

Can anyone guide abut how much loan is provided by banks for PGP course. It is deciding factor for my further planning. Do the banks do partial or 100% Funding of fees? Do they take any gaurauntee? Anyone pls share their experience.

HI Frnds
I have a query regarding work exp. After completing my B.Tech I had joined as Graduate Trainee Engr. from Aug 2006 to Nov.2007 (1yrs and 3 months) and then i got Permanent As Asst Mgr in Nov. 2007 and working there still now. My work exp as Graduate Trainee Engineer will taken in consideration for my work experience. Pls help.

Hi Mandar,

No need to worry about fees. SBI offers "scholar" education loan of Rs 10L for XLRI GMP students. No collateral is required.

Cheers!

Hello Folks,

Sorry if my questions are a bit offbeat..I wanted to clarify a few things with the current students. Would appreciate if someone can spare some time in answering these questions :

1) Is there a place to look at the current student profiles....work ex, median age, median GMAT
And

2) Placement prospects for the previous batches

Thank you folks.....

Hi Onlinearora,

Just want to thank you for starting this thread first. I was lost in the last 2 months and b4 that silently followed the XLRI batch and read all threads till the results.

I saw a couple of threads of the guys including yours, when you guys were waiting for the wait list and bla bla....My heartiest congrats to all again.....

Coming to the point...I will be taking GMAT in 1 or 2 months and aspiring to apply for XLRI.
1. When does the admission process start (any tentative dates)?
2. I am also applying to IMI (exe), GLakes, and SP Jain (singapore), can anyone please throw some light on these institutes programs as well. Know that it may not b a relevant Q here but saw that someone converted IMI and GLakes and then preferred XLRI to them.

Thanks in advance.

HI Mandar,
As long as you have proof of the work experience of the trainee period, it would be considered for the application. Cheers

Hi Motivation,
Below mentioned are the answers to your questions:
1. The admission dates for the GMP program would be around the month of November. You can give GMAT or XAT to apply for GMAT. Check on the website of XLRI for the exact dates.
2. I did apply for GL before i joined XLRI. GL also has a 1 year program. I heard that it recently got an affiliation. The course in XL is meant for people who have 5 or more years of management experience. I think in GL it is a little less. GL has lot of visiting faculty and Xl focusses more on permanent faculty. This is older than the one at GL.As per the decision, its is your own call. You would have to look at a variety of factors before choosing any college.
If you have any further queries do feel free to ask. We would be glad to help as much as we can.
