Hi everybody

I am almost a one year in IT insustry right now and palnning to take GMAT by Aug and then spend rest of time for CAT . As a college student my performance was quite good but am finding it difficult to study for GMAT/ CAT while working .
My percentile for CAT 04 ws 90.73
For CAT I somehow used to leve the office by 6 and go to bed by 7:30 -8 , get up at 2-3 and study till morning . Hwever the efficiency of my preparation was not that good as I used to be half asleep and sometimes sleep in between .

So , people who have made it to MBA while working , please let me know
1) AT what time did you used to study ( and for how many hours per day)?
2) How many hours per day u used to sleep ?
3 )Any methods u used to avoid sleep ? ( like drinking cofee etc ?)

Please reply to me no matter how silly this may seem to u .
I know I have the talent to make it to MBA in a good college but somehow no able to harness my potentila.

Ya.. thats a good question... I am in the same position as yours dude...
Thats the only downside to CATting with work ex... to make time to study...

How about we make this a discussion thing for working people who are CATing... I guess there must be a thread for that as well but after a bit of time threads lose focus... good to start again...

In my case, I get home at 7:30 on most days... and I personally just cannot deal with getting up before I wake up naturally.... i'd much rather stay up all night... I might quit my job in September... though its not something I want to do unless I have to...

Ok... so this is for everyone with Work Ex... currently planningto take '05 or have gotten through some decent place...
What gives guys?
How did you do it?
What all stuff should I be concerned about for CAT paper, GD/PI?

There is a trend of B-Schools slowly increasing their intake of people with work ex... there must be certain expectations from such people that B-Schools can't reasonably have from a fresher...

sharing of opinion in this regard will be greatly apreciated!

And before we forget...

HOW DID YOU "MANAGE" TO STUDY??

Lets see if we get replies here thou... Mods (understandably) frown upon duplication !!

where do you work? co. and city i mean...

To tell u frankly, its little difficult to make it into IIMs like b-school with work......well its not impossible.

U just need to lose 1-2 hours of your sleep. Say, if u slept for 7 hours earlier...try to make it 6 to 5.5 hours.
Also, with work-ex its little difficult to take time out for friends n family. Coz u r devoting ur attention on work. n then suddenly U have CAT prep in ur hand. So, u need to move a little away from social circuit, for the last crucial six months. Rem to work smart (coz this is a world of smart workers n not hard workers); N single minded attention to ur goal is a must. Coz unless u feel d enthu' to go for CAT, nobody can help. So u need to make some sacrifices(arre only for 6-8 months).....then u'll b in d heaven of ur choice.

People, I m myself facing d same troubles n following the above mentioned tips. N if I can do it, so can u. After all u can always take out 4-5 hours for practice.

Cheers

Ya, no magic techniques to achieve this...
so dude, are you in a b-school or are you preping for one?

well said mate...

hey u said it right....need to add a bit to it..

in the selection process to B-school....now there is priority given to working GALS(heard that gender matters here also) with 1-2 yrs ex ,preferably in NON-IT field......:whatthat:

anyways the b-schools will foresee us(working group) much ahead than a fresher ,bcz they expect us to be already put in and faced with a realtime ,stringent n hectic working environment where they expect us to show a real stamina to push through ...n finally its alll abt managing ur work and ofcourse ur BOSS ......

same here 2 yrs work ex ..not enuf time for CAT ....so i sucked at cat...so have decided for GMAT.....hope work and gmat go hand in hand......all of us have similar problem .....one of my frnd got into IIM after 2 yrs of work ex and CATing ...his funda was 3 hrs of study daily ...dunno how the hell he managed........

yeah , even mine case is pretty similar to
that of yours.2+ years of work ex.

GMAT this time around....:grab:

Hi Guys ,

There is good news for me .. got into NUS , Singapore !!!!

Some tips that I thought might help others

This is how u might utilize the time especially if you r a s/w guy

---Lunches -- Try to go outside , revise something like Word Power , formulas etc
---If u got internet , browse info sites like pagalguy and others helps during the interview where the extra gyan gives u an edge .
---I Understood u cannot possibly bring book and study !!! but u can bring part possibly
bering Newspaper , magazine etc , put it in ur table , and browse it whenever ur free
----If possible , avoid the loose talk and chit chat in coffee time Take a walk instead
making crucial decisions such as when to fill form etc
----U can also use ur free time to fill up online application and stuff

Thats it from my exp !!! .Hope that helps atleast one of u guys !!!
Keep adding post to this thread and make it popular in pagalguy !!!:)

Well I am doing my graduation in Economics ...

1. During first 2 years .... I was working with a Textile company which was more than 20 km away from my home .... and 12 hrs/day was minimum. I used to sleep for not more than 4 hrs.
2. Then I switched to a telecom company thinking that there I will have 8 hr shedule (and I was despo for an 8 hr job at that time because I was tired of sleeping for just 4 hr/day for 2 years .... and it was my final year + CAT .... so I thought that a sound sleep of 6 hr/day was must ) .... but ohh my destiny .... company changed it's organisation structure and converted my team into a cross functional-multy tasking team .... we were put at the front end of the entire back end verticle .... which means .... we work for 24 hr-365 days !!! I worked in that situation also and kept on sleeping for 3-4 hr/day for one more year. Result : Failed in a sem and clearing the CAT looked impossible.
So I left the job finally and so that I can focus on the final year exams and clear the CAT.
So it's highly demanding job to continue ur studies along with ur job.
