Hello all,
Took the GMAT today and got a 760(Q-51, V-43). I'm absolutely overjoyed that I've achieved my target score as I had set a target of 760 only 😃 Another reason why I feel so happy is that even though I thought that I have screwed up my Verbal section, it turned out well in the end and I managed to get a good score on Verbal. It's like the joy you feel when you meet with a bad accident and you come unscathed and you thank God for blessing you with a new life.

Don't have much to say but here are my advices on the various aspects of the GMAT

1. Preparation time : In my opinion, the ideal preparation time for the GMAT is 4 months. I think this is a good enough time as it will give you breathing space and will also not let you lose momentum.

2. Book a slot early or late ? Some people and instructors suggest that booking a slot when you start your preparation is good as it'll keep you on your toes. Some people, on the other hand book their slot only 3-4 days in advance. I think that either of this is not a very effective strategy. When I started with my prep, I had a date in mind, but I booked my date after 3 months into the preparation or 25 days before my GMAT date as by then I started realizing that I am doing good enough to take the GMAT.

3. Time management on the exam : As with any other competitive exam or sport, time management is of critical important on the exam. Even if you would have prepared well for , if you do not remain cool while taking the exam, you may blow up on the G-day

4. Handling crisis : There are going to be instances while taking the test when you'll feel like I've lost the plot. I've screwed up the exam, but you have to motivate yourself to keep giving your best on whatever part remains. While doing the Quant section, I knew that I was not doing well. My mind simply didn't seem to be working properly. In fact, I couldn't attempt the last question on the Quant section. I was so overwhelmed and disappointed that I thought of canceling the test. Then in the 8 minute break when I entered the washroom, I looked in front of the mirror and told myself that I'm going to give my best on Verbal irrespective of whatever crap happened on the Quant section and I told myself that it's not over till the exam is over.

5.Books to use : I think that the material you use for the GMAT can be a deal breaker .Good material will help you move to the next level while bad material will stagnate your preparation. Here's my review of the books:

a)Princeton Review : Throw them away if you want to score above 600
b)Kaplan : Maybe good for practice but nothing great about the books. And what I have never understood is that why do they have the different books for the same thing. Kaplan 800, Kaplan Advanced, Kaplan Verbal, Kaplan Maths. All they seem to be bothered about is sales, I guess.
c)Manhattan GMAT : Their Maths books are great.I just loved their Number properties books Liked their SC book too. However, the amount of information there is overwhelming and difficult to retain. So if you feel nervous that you're not able to understand a lot of things, don't worry, everything will be fine.

Secondly, their practice CATs are the closest to the actual GMAT. The practice CATs of other test prep companies really suck!

d) Aristotle Prep : Their SC Grail is a gem. It's very structured, concise and helps you understand things easily. I think it makes for an excellent supplement for MGMAT SC and you should start with it. Their RC sets are quite good. I think that after doing these practice sets you should be ready to take on any type of passage as your brain would have developed the stamina required to read those kind of passages.

6. G-day :On the D-day, I took a redbull with me. I had taken this suggestion from the members on this forum as it's an energy drink and will help you keep going through the 3.5 hour long journey. In the end everything turned out for the good and I think my path to the schools of my choice just got a little easier . Will keep on updating this debrief when I get more time. Hope this would be helpful. 😃

As you can see from my userid "cornell" is definitely one of the schools I am applying to . Apart from that, I have Haas, Fuqua and Kellogg as the other target schools.I'll also have Kelley and Kenan Flager as the safety schools. This list is not final and as I go about doing my research I may add/remove some schools. You're planning to apply this year or the next ?

Thats great. Congrats a lot man. I'm planning to give GMAT sometime by November '11 so that I'm in place for the second deadlines in Jan '12. I wanna know what was your work experience in which field and for how long?

I have 5 years of work experience in the Telecom field. I am from an IIT but don't have great grades. Have a strong profile though and hopefully should be able to crack a few schools.

Just a word of caution about using stimulants like Red Bull, as the body can behave strangely when it is not used to it.

Read this story about a 770 GMAT scorer and then read the comments (specially the one by Arindam).

Firstly, don't bother about your class X and XII performance because that is something which is not taken into consideration when you apply to schools. In fact, the schools don't even have any fields for entering your school performance.
Your work experience certainly is a little on the lower side and you may have to wait for one additional year to be a more competitive candidate. However, since you're not targetting the top 20, I think that getting through a couple of to 50 schools seems achievable.

@Cornell
Congrats on the fabulous score. Are you also looking at NUS/NTU or just targeting the top 10 in the US ?

@ cornell: Congratulations man..!!!
I need a suggestion from all you guys... I need a suggestion whether I can make to top 20 B-schools ; profile: 10th - 94.4% , 12th - 80% , B.Tech(engineering) - 75%
I have 2 year work experience with Fluor Daniel. I got 730 in GMAT but my co- curriculars are not very exceptional. Should I get more work experience to compensate my co-curriculars or should I simply apply?
Please guys.... need an honest and urgent answer...!! 😃

I've got a very similar profile to sanchit90.
10th CBSE - 87
12th CBSE -89.6
BTech EEE (NIT Calicut) - 7.5/10
Currently am working in Alstom in a Project Management role in the Power EPC sector with 2 years of work ex. Extra-currics in college dont amount to much, but I believe I've got some decent stuff in school. I haven't given the GMAT yet, but had got a CAT %ile 98.6. Should be able to work on the GMAT score.
I had gone through the CVs of those selected into the 2010 Batch of INSEAD, and I was literally blown out of my mind. Wanted some guidance as to whether it would be worthwhile to work for a couple of years more, add some extra-currics into that CV and then apply for the GMAT, or take the easier way to an MBA via CAT.

Hey ajith,
From where did you get the CVs of the 2010 Batch of INSEAD??I also want to look into the CVs of people in Harvard,Wharton,INSEAD,Stanford,Columbia.

Thanks in advance.

Hey agith... seems like u have very similar profile to mine.. infact I worked in EPC only for 2 yrs ....
Well.. dude please help me...where did u find the CV's of those selected in 2010 Batch of INSEAD (or maybe other top B-Schools) ?? Please message me the link... I would be highly grateful....!!

Thanks....!!!

Various clubs in INSEAD and for that matter reputed BSchools compile the CVs of their members for prospective recruiters. This one I had found was for their Social Impact club.
Googling "CV book Insead 2010" should give you a couple of links. Alternatively,

Honestly seeing some of their resumes, I just did not want to look for more.
