I am a current student at The Nanyang MBA and will take your questions regarding the application process for the academic year 2010.

Upfront I would like to suggest the following:
1) Please visit the Nanyang MBA website and go through it carefully. Most of the questions one would have about the school, the application process would be answered there.
2) Please do a thorough research before posting your questions. No open-ended questions like evaluate my chances or what do you think ... ? Truth is no one can evaluate your chances because there are too many factors in the admission process.
3) The trick is to apply as early as possible without compromising the quality of your applications.
4) Be as truthful as possible else it shows through. The admissions team is quite experienced and has dealt with thousands of students in the past. Dont think you can outsmart them.
5) Think from the shoes of the admissions team. They evaluate mediocre/average/common profiles by the hundreds. Focus, Focus, Focus on your differentiation points/your strengths/you unique abilities.

Feel free to throw as many questions you want to. I shall get some more current students on board to bring their perspective as well.

I am the first to question you here I guess. I am a technology analyst and hence, I want to specialize in Technology Management at NTU.. so here are a few questions to start off..

1) What are the career prospects for a MBA in Tech Management student from NTU?

2) Is tech management a strongly preferred specialization at NTU?

To be honest, the choice of specialisation does not affect the admission intake. Why? Well, quite frankly is because along the way if your interest shifted to another sector, you are allowed to change. However, your choice of specialisation will be asked during the interview process. You'll need to be able to explain why you want to be in that specialisation. Your answer has to be solid. Bottomline, you need to know what you want.

I remember reading somewhere in the FAQ that NTU also gives students the option of doing a general mba... can u pls tell wats the diff. between this general mba and specialised mba's... like whether there is separated intake for each of them etc etc... wat abt students applying for general mba? do they also need to be specific abt what spln they mite want to take?

Specialized MBA - 4 or more elective modules in that specialization
General MBA - Any mixture of the elective modules (to make up the required 7 modules)

No separate intake. All come in during the same time.

No. If you're going to general, you're basically just need to go along the "keep my option open" or "yet to discover your area of interest". You'll never know what you'll end up with at the end of the day as certain topics may interest you more than the rest.

just wanted to know that what are expences one need to spend during the course including tution fee and other daily living (fooding, lodging) expences........just want an average amount..............

I have an admit for the SP Jain GMBA course which starts in April 2010 in Singapore (and then 6 months in Dubai). This was when I worked in India. Recently I have moved to singapore and I am now working here.
My profile:
Exp: IT (4+ years)
GMAT: 700 (5.5)
Internation Exp: Worked in US for 10 months and now working in Singapore

I have applied to ISB and I am thinking of Applying to Nanyang as well as NUS. I want to specialize in marketing in the services sector.
1) Would the NUS MBA suite me or the Nanyang MBA? (seems like NUS is known for finance)
2) Any idea about how SP Jain is rated in the markets here compared to the other univs?
3) Currently working in the IT sector as a techie i earn around 60K SGD. Do you think that an MBA in marketing would fetch me a salary greater than that in singapore? (This shudnt change my decision to take up MBA but wud want to know even otherwise)

Hi Jaydutt,

Congrats on your admit to SP Jain GMBA program.

1) I would not be able to comment on the strength of the NUS MBA program. As far as the Nanyang MBA goes, marketing is definitely not the core competency the program. But you could look at doing the NTU - ESSEC double masters that shall give you an edge in Marketing. Please refer to the website for further details.
2) Again, I would not be able to comment on SP Jain's market reputation in Singapore but one difference between SP Jain and Nanyang is that SP Jain has campus placements whereas Nanyang doesnt have one. So if Job Security is of utmost importance to you, SP Jain would be of more interest to you. Having said that Nanyang has an active career services division, that helps you in every which way to secure a placement but securing a job is primarily your responsibility.
3) Fetching a higher salary post mba is a function of many variables. If the job that you land up with post-mba does not value your previous experience at all then you may not get a salary higher than your current one. But if by the time you graduate, the job market becomes an employee's market as opposed to an employer's market you may still get a salary more than you are receiving currently. There is no guaranteeing anything. I hope you get my drift.

To the rest of the applicants,

Please come to the Nanyang MBA for the experience, for the learning, for opening up your world. Nobody in this world is going to guarantee you a job post your education. The onus of landing a job rests primarily on you.

Post an MBA in Tech Mgmt, what industry and job function are you looking to get into ?

Tech Mgmt is not a strongly preferred specialization at NTU but that is because of the general preference of students for the more glamorous functions like finance and marketing. As far as my experience till now goes, Nanyang does have good subjects in technology mgmt which you can combine with strategy subjects as well.

I shall be able to help you more if you could share you immediate plans post-mba with respect to the job profile you are looking for. Pls try and be as specific as possible.

Hi Daxesh,

Any business school does not look at your GMAT score in isolation. It is an important yet a small part of your entire application to a business school. If you feel you have a strong overall application, strong reasons for applying to Nanyang Business School then by all means go ahead and apply. Truth is that people with GMAT scores of 700+ have been rejected by the business schools all over and people with sub 700 scores have been accepted because of a strong overall application.

If you are interested in Entrepreneurship, what are you looking to do post MBA? What kind of resources, help are you expecting from Nanyang Business School (NBS)? You need to ask yourself these questions.
NBS does not have a dedicated cells for entrepreneurship at the moment. Though Nanyang Technological University has a center called Nanyang Technopreneurship Center. You might want to give that a look as well.

Can I know your motivations for applying to the Nanyang Waseda Course?
Meanwhile, I shall try to get some colleagues on this course currently to speak about it.
Also, you could email the school and ask for some alumni details from the Waseda course who would be able to give you a better insight into the course.
