Hey All,

Just wanted all you PagalGuys to buzz me if you wished to talk about applying to IE Business School - Instituto de Empresa in Madrid. We're a top 10 globally ranked school and we're all real proud.

A bit about myself, I'm Canadian, and with solid work experience in India, APAC, EU and the US - Pharma background.

IE's a great school to be a part of in the EU right now, and would be happy to answer any questions about the school, applying, scholarships etc.

Thanks,

Anil

Hello Anil,
Thank you for starting this thread. I was trying to get some info on IE program but its pretty limited outside.
Please pardon me as I am about to throw a number of questions which I wanted to throw to an alum/student as soon as I get hold of one

I have the following queries:-
1) How do you see the school compared to its peers in Europe (LBS, Insead, IMD, Said etc)?
2) How good or bad is the placement situation? Does all of the class land in a job desired by them?
3) Which is the major sector which picks up students ? Is it Consulting or Finance?
4) What is the impact of the current financial crisis? Are the current students facing problems in finding jobs?
5) How about International students? Scope of scholarship for them as well the placement scenario for them?
6) IE stresses on case based study methodology if I am not wrong, so how do you find the same. I am targeting consulting and this is one of the most important criteria for me.

Shelin

1) IE Business school holds itself as a school focused on Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Driving Ethically charged Graduates into successful corporate directors. Social responsibility, Organizational Leadership are some IE's key strengths. IE cannot be compared perhaps with Said Business School because IE has been around for much longer and it's legacy is the foundational focus of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurial abilities matched with having been around for 30+ years. LBS: To me LBS is like Wharton, I'm not sure I'm heavily focused on Consulting or Finance. However LBS is creme de la financial powerhouses recruiting on campus. INSEAD: The place to be if you want to the know the in's and outs or Leadership with a sharp focus on General Management - good place to hang out for 12 mos if consulantcies are attractive to you. IMD: Superb School if you can identify yourself with school's yearbook of student profiles. I'm not sure I liked it all that much compared to the likes of INSEAD or Empresa (But I'm being subjective) IMD is a superior leadership focused school producing some of the finest graduates.
2. Placement: Well there's always BCG, Booz Allen, Microsoft, Google, AT Kearney, McKinsey that always recruit on capmus followed by L'oreal, Louis Vuitton, Lancome..etc. Then if you love industrial powerhouses like Porsche, BMW AG, VW, Airbus, they also recruit at Empresa. NOTE: There's no such real thing as on campus recruitment anymore it's a facade and a formality (I'm being harsh and subjective). It's more all about how rampantly you network and grow yourself by aggressively pursuing your interests objectively.
Scholarships - There's enough to go around for everyone. Apply early and start doing your homework on the logistics of an application process at Empresa.
Consultancies: Wouldn't be too worried about this - as I mentioned earlier all the Top consultancies do recruit on campus. Make sure you're a good student not just acads but non-acads as well play a role regardless of what the typical guys tell you.
Global Crises: Well, the EU is doing very well for employment, India is a paymaster these days for me it has been that way as my experience, the middle-east doesn't know when to stop paying for top tier talent.
International Students: I only have 30 students in my cohort - every student in my class is from a different country. How's that for diversity?

Case Based: This is the only way out.. it's practical it's real and readily applicable when you get into professional scenarios that perhaps might be (rare) or very close to kinds of cases we reviewed in class. Seriously hold on to your texts if you like a full-on read but as a Client Services Director for a start up pharma this makes far more sense to me - Case based approach has its own merits and i would ask you to research this online too.

I trust my response helped you in some meagre way.Don't hesitate to zero in on specific items you wish to have further addressed.

cheers,

anil

Nice analysis.. i looked @ the placement report of the 13 month international mba program and the average salary indicated is Euro 57,200 = us$80,000. This is low in comparison to top 15 us schools and top europe schools. Any reasons for it ?

Also regarding admissions.. is it a rolling process ? is toefl waivered for indian applicants ? What's the scholarship scene ? Are any free-rides awarded?

Wht's the core focus in terms of curriculum(finance/marketing/gnrl mgmt/ strategy) ?

Thanks in advance

Anil,
Thanks for the detailed reply, it did help me in understanding a lot about IE.
One more query I have is regarding finding jobs in EU. How much does the language factor play its part? Except UK finding jobs without knowing local language is tough, right?

Also as tank_I asked, what is the core strength of the school. Is it consulting/finance or the other streams.
Diversity do play a part and the fact that almost all of the international students in your class are from different countries go a long way in telling that IE values diversity.

How competitive is IE for a International student?

Shelin

1. Finding jobs in the EU - shouldn't really be a problem. If I wanted to widen the net I cast post-graduation a) I would identify the kind of employers I want to be a part of whilst in the program b) Learn Spanish or French or German for that matter so that you easily stand a good chance of getting scooped up - why not be as strong as your competition that's the rationale behind this point c) 2 of my friends are working here in Madrid one for MANGO here in Madrid and the other for Telefonica and both are Indian - but fluent in Spanish - how do you like that 😃

2. Core Strength: Entrepreneurship and Leadership, Corporate Governance - this is not your every day run of the mill pedigree driven MBA but highly practical, realistic, case driven, research focused institution that you get to be a part of. (Everyone likes to say that of their school but have a look at where IE was 10 years go, 5 years ago and where we are today) that should probably tell you that employers today are looking for thinkers and leaders - its what should keep you away from high tide for example - the crapshoot US economy. Important: You have to think Global to succeed, be focused on leadership and innovation and more than anything else know that IE just like INSEAD or Wharton or GSB Chicago is only a tool that allows you to build your network, grow your mind, dares you to broaden your thoughts and the brand won't always walk ahead of you instead it might just open a door or two. IE, would allow for you to thrive within a consultancy.

3. Shelin, the future as it has been foretold 200 years back if you like good literature, tells us that the world has paradigmed itself away from the United States and more toward China and India, the EMEA regions. These regions should keep you afloat for pay, growth, career, and keep you close to what reality is for the next 70 to 80 years.

Hope this helps in some way.. Will write more.. when I get a chance..

My Simple questions is regarding TOEFL.

Is TOEFL waived for indian applicants ?

I am from a reputed engineering institute and our medium is English throughout the four years.

-Akhilesh.

Hi Akhil,

TOEFL is usually waived for Indian students who've had English as the medium of instruction.

However, this is not by default; it is done on a case-to-case basis.
Please contact the admissions office, state your case, and ask for a waiver.

1)Can you give me some links for scholarship. am from India. so what all s'ships am i eligible to apply

2) bet'n Ox AND ie, which is a better school ,if i want to get a placed in the EU post work ,and with a job that involves marketing/ consulting etc

What is the age range of the students at IE madrid?

Are there any students in the age range 32 - 38?

Hola,

Anybody got an idea about the educational loan scenario with the Spanish banks ?

Specifically, IE has a tie-up with Caja Madrid.
- Is Caja Madrid still giving out loans to IE students without co-signors ?
- Are they cutting down on the funding to IE students ?

Am just a wee bit worried, and would appreciate any, repeat, any info !

Hi Guys,

I just recieved an interview notification from IE for the Sept 09 intake. I completed all my application formalities by the 9th of Jan.

My interview is scheduled on the 28th of Jan. Keeping my fingers crossed. Will go through all previous posts regarding formats of all previous interviews.

@@BlackDog and other selected candidates, please do send across your contacts. Would love to learn from your interview experiences.

Hello,

Can you please tell me what did they ask in interview....my interview is lined up . can you please help me?

I had my interview on 28 Jan. The admissions interview was pretty straight forward. I was interviewed by the India representative Karan Gupta. He will probably interview all Indians applying. Very few questions asked - mostly general ones - Why MBA, What are your strengths, and the biggest part being - take me through your resume. Mine finished in 30 minutes. That would tell you, that its mostly a general chat... to see if you are the person who wrote your application.. So, if you get a call for the interview, you can hope to almost make it through

All the best!
Subhash

Hi all,

Hi, I have got admit in Master in telecom and digital business program at IE,

Please guide me about the program, i have seen the content its good but i am not aware about the ROI, placements, average salary...etc,

would you recommend this program?

I personally had a family member attend the Telecom and Digital Biz program - who's doing quite well today by the way at SingTel. Although this is off my subject matter expertise - I would recommend our school's brand name of course I'm biased since I'm now an IXMBA 2010.

Here's how I'd structure my thoughts:

1. What is the future of the telecom industry ?
2. Where would I want to work ? If you would want to work in an emerging economy ? - You ready for India ? China ? the Middle East ?
3. Are you doing this program to to really get into telecom - Have you had any telecom experience ?
4. If you look at the description of the Master's program at IE - you really would be exposed to the fundamental framework of the industry - ie. You get all the raw material to help you get the ball rolling.

In today's economy the ROI depends on you and how hard you're willing to network, take advantage of career services, knock on prospective employers' doors starting yesterday (metaphor). Look for internships from your first period.

The one thing I can tell you is that IE is a strong brand in industry, and you will have that to support you - your success is totally contingent upon what you make of everything else.

I know all of this is not what you wanted to hear perhaps - BUT - should help you gauge your mindset and go forth in full confidence knowing you've got a strong brand backing you all the way - Globally !

Oh and start networking now !

Best.
