Hey gys,

1)Brand name
2)ROI......
3)Placements
4)Chances of selection.

WORK EX: IT total 3 yrs..total.......(3.5 or 4 by the time I join....July)
HCL Tech..... Software engineer........fresher to till Jan 06........

NUS is a distant third..............Please also throw light on NUS placements............backed by facts or personla info............no 'overheard' talks please..........

hey Abhi,

Nice u've threaded one for '07 appers. me too travelling in the same boat.
Your choice of schools is too gud, infact best in europe.
Check out the adm criteria, few of those schools look for students with international exposure and loads of work ex. Nevertheless, the question boils down to our indian army recruitment line - "Do you have it in you?"

I have done some home work on US B-schools on specific specialisation.
Now my research focus is on european schools.

Me: 24/M/ 4+ wrk ex in Insurance by fall '07/ avg acads in B.E mech/ better extra currics/ 700 GMAT

Cheers
Shivanand.

Hi Abhi , Shivanand,

I'm also looking out for 2007 Firang Universities eyeing basically the US schools coz i would be having only 2.5-3.0 yrs work exp at the time of joining.

Started Preparing for GMAT would be giving it a shot in 3-4 months time hopefully aiming a score of 700+.

Can you plz..provide 2 cents....about my scope to get into decent universities....with the profile as below....

AGE :23

EDU: BE Computers; From a Private College Karnataka(2004), 71 % (among the top 10) from Visveswariah Technological University Belgaum karnataka.

Not much extra curriculars

WORK EX: IT total 1.5+ yrs..total.......(2.5-3.0 by the time I join)
Mahindra British Telecom..... Software Engineer........fresher to till June 05........
STMicroelectronics .......Software Engineer........Till Date

GMAT: Not Given as of now (aiming around 700)

Looking forward to your suggestions....Hope we all make to good universities.

Hey Mandeep,

I think that ur job ex is towards the lesser side.......and Bro .........dont worry abt college and all.......they wont really care ant ur undergrad coll brand name...........BITS/REC/DCE type college seem to have some kingda brand value in Asia.......but other that that........they only know selected IITs .....that too ,not all of them.........

So......it all boils down to ur job ex and GMAT...apart from ur essays.........I think that since u dont have enogh job ex......u shud be looking at getting a high score.....somewhere in the region of 730-740+ or alse the road is tough..........

It also depends upon ur choice of college.....If u r looking at top colleges then u have to justify ur appl with some fundoo stuff...........if u can have some solid 'fakes' .....it will help !

european schools look for more job ex and international ex.......that will help !Its not that I am trgetting only the european colleges........Just that I am looking for 1 yr courses.................frankly speaking..........if u gimme a degree rt now in 6 months and a gud placement..............i'll take that too......

what all colleges i can look forward too in US......suggest by looking at my profile guys............

MODS........u r GODS ! Please help by giving suggestions............

Hi Abhi,

Thanks a lot for your valuable information....definitely need to thing bout some...solid...:)Extra Curricilars:)....but i think it would not be a problem...if your college helps u in provinding such Certificates...but that would be a lateral part of the application.....definitely....have to think seriously bout my GMAT....at this point of time....

Well i wish you all the very best....for your Firang MBA...:)that too for 1 yr:)....yaar i think u had a solid profile...and can easily get into...INSEAD....or RSM , HEC....which are institutes of global repute....in case u r thinking beyons ISB AIM or NUS....

Well dude...keep posting any gud info....u gather....

Hey Man,

I dont think that i have solid profile..........There r many bonds out there.....who have a profile to die for ! but.......u have to live with them...........

All righty then..........I am not thinking on lines of AIM ........as of now..........i'll be applting to NUS for sure....but then it will not be one of the favoured destinations............I cud have applied this yr but decided to wait for another yr so that I can atleast take a shot at some gud colleges.............!! I'll also be applying to ISB.........there is the 'India' factor !
Actually the placements stats and feedback of aisan colleges is very disappointing...........so we have to make a call..............

By the way.......do any one of u planning to write CAT this yr...........??

Hi Guys,
First of all congratulations on Your GMAT scores and best of Luck for your MBA.

One open ended question..ifa person has say 3-5 yrs of exp then what is the weightage
of extra curriculars ( which were done before starting job may be in school or colleges)
in one's application???

him:

Hey Biswa,

I think that u have a decent profile running into things.......but it is difficult to give any sort of chances unles u have a GMAT under ur belt( with a decent core,of course!)....and without analysing ur reco/essays...........they have to reflect on ur personality..........

Remember........its is not only abt grades and ex.........specially for us Indian?IT sector guys from decent colleges......who have their job ex on the shallower side............

I think that ppl like us have to make that u with
1) Good GMAT score.........TOEFL is easy in any case !
2)Quality of work( since we will fall a little short on the quantity,as far as Eurpe is concerned )
3)Good reco/essays..........

I suggest u ppl to have a look at the profiles of guys at INSEAD/IMD........tab samjhe mein aa jaata hai..........

Colleges like RSM/HEC/Institito can be a better bet if one ahas lesser job ex..........
but if on is not looking for a top notch 1 yr MBA..........and money is not a fight .......then I wud suggest u to look at the US more seriously.............

Marzi hai aapki.......aakhir life hai aapki !!!!

hi,
I agree with you. In my view the key diffrentaiting factor for our applications would be our resumes ( gmat score yes). So we need to addd as much to our resumes as possible before applying
1. Certifications
2. Extra responsibilities taken in Job apart from usual coding ( for IT people).
3. Extra curricular for ex: social work, club memberships (like toastmaster etc).
etc etc..

am i right???

regrds:grab:

Hey buddies !

Nice to see the thread going...

Himanshu ! On your query reg the extra currics...
my 2 cents>>
These are some things that add value to ur profile coz u r adding value to urself by stepping out of ur normal course(study/ work) and doing something more.
These extra currics show that u r not a dumbo but u also have varied interests and a passion to pursue and also excel in them:wow: . they arent jus a few lines that fill the space in one's resume or eat into reader's time. They give a better picture of the person when one is reading ur profile.
If u have done something extra ordinary in schooling or some time back and not pursuing anymore.. there must be a reason. Obviously one will have. But are you not pursuing anything else now apart from ur work? If yes... evaluate yourself buddy??: .
Are u lagging somewhere?? Is work eating into ur personal life?? or u don't have any interests any more??
A good manager is a person who can balance the work life as well as personal life.

All work and no play would not have made Jack .... Welch.

Hope I did not offend. I got a new keyboard and testing it's efficiency .

Cheers
Shivanand

Hi Abhi_insane bhai .... Yes you are darn right ....

I am trying to work on a certain things ..... Like, though I will have to write some college specific Esays ..... I have started joting down answers for some of the Generic Qs asked .... :satisfie:
Like say .... Personal Profile, Why MBA, What are my goals kind of Questions :satisfie:

GMAT preps, I must admit is not going great gunns

All your words matter matters a lot to me .... so posted to get some generic views atleast !!!

You are very right ... we IT guys are at the shallow end .... .... I hope I can do something to stand out  .....

Ofcourse as I said .... US is an equally important option for me :)

Hope to hear more from you guys ..... this thread wil keep us wired till the last stages of this entire feat :)

BTW: Pls give conversion to GPA thinge ... I tried the web but all sites gave different values

Hi Himanshu,

Just to answer your question ... I reckon that it would not hold a great importance if you have not done anything atall during ur working time.

The idea of asking such things means you have also shown a certain responsibilities or carried ur Hobbies or generated new interests .... This gives an overall picture about ur attitude towards your life .....

But if u have done something during ur working time also ..... then the work done during schooling or college will give a very good impression ..... stating that u have undertaken interests and social responsibilities very early in life!

All,

wht all colleges r u ppl looking at.Can each one(most) list down ur primary shortlistings.......so that we have a diff pic for everybody in mind

All righty.........the mother of all queries..................
I do not wanna be in the field of IT post MBA...........even in Business Development( Project Mangemnt does not req an MBA at all.........he he ! )...............
I want to see myself in the line of consulting.................Now,for 'firang' colleges................unlike India....all the ppl have job ex.........do these so clled 'Management Consulting' companies....take guys only with prior 'Consulting' exp..............coz in that case there wont be too many guys with that kinda pre MBA exp.............or do they look for 'Domain expertise' say in diff sectors ??

Okay, to simplify.........i mean to say..........what kinda chance will I have to switch into 'consulting' after MBA.........and the tern 'IT Consulting' has been used a lot these days..........does this mean 'Consulting' in IT sector or 'Implementation' kinda jobs ( SAP etc.)........which r unfortunately called as consulting these days............This query has arisen coz colleges like INSEAD has almost....50% of their batch placed in the consulting side.......and it is just so iff to imagine that all of them wud have been in the same sector pre MBA................also since they diff. a lot between a 'firnag' IVY league collegite and say an IIM grad( since Indian MBA's dont have any job ex. ......thay r usually offered lower positions as compared to Ivy league......)..........will I stand a chnce to lose my pedigree..........? I mean ......does in mean that all work I have done so far goes down the dran................

PLz clarify.................MODS ........GODS! help in this matter !

All,

wht all colleges r u ppl looking at.Can each one(most) list down ur primary

Hi Abhi .... to answer ur Query ....
There is nothing that there cannot be a make shift .... I have seen a lot of make shifts happening in the past .... However your lack of experience in the field will ofcourse ask for some compromises!!! May be at the cost of ur Salary Package!!!

About all the work that is going to drain? ... May be not exactly ... but u sure will have to learn a lot of new things!!

Hi Abhi_Insane

I dont think that it would be too difficult to switch into consulting after MBA. The switch thingy is one of the main reasons why people actually take MBA for many a times.
and unless you move across a totally unrelated field say finance or marketing ... I dont thing ur pedigree 😃 would be lost.

Regards
Pinaki

hello bdsam.

this post is not intended to be rude. but i would like to point at something that u wrote a couple of posts earlier.

and it is for a lot of others like u.

u wrote: what is the gmat score i should be aiming at??

now now... what kind of a query is that.... ?? what i mean is that...suppose i tell u that u should aim at 600, even then u are gonna try ur best to get 800...or would u leave questions ananswered during the test because u feel u have reached the score u should aim at!!!!
and if i say u should aim at 790... it does not mean that u wont give the gmat because u probably cannot get that score. u will still give it ur best shot, aint it?!!?

so dont ask that question...it is a useless question. it wont do u no good and answering it will be futile.

again i say that im not being rude or anything...just am amazed at why people ask this question ( u are not the only one to have asked this).

so people please refrain. go out there and get the best that u can.

Hi guys,

As far as I have browsed the websites of the global top b-schools, I realized that the average age of the students is atleast 27 (but, the range is 24 to 34). For some of the institutes, it is as high as 31. Also, the average salary of the incoming students is atleast $40,000. In these circumstances, pls. advise me what I need to do to get into these institutes. I have around 3.5 years of exp. By the time, next year, it will be 4.5 yrs. And any insights into the assistanceships/aid/scholarships are welcome.

Thanks.

Well i am joining this group alos will be applying to some of the top schools in Us and probably one in UK.....

First things first .. giving my gmat and then finally taking a call .....

Anyone applying to Stanford and Harvard here....
