All GMATters at Hyderabad are invited to participate in this thread - An attempt to collectively pin the beast. This is another regular thread to club up the efforts of all Hyderabad junta aspiring to crack GMAT. I would appreciate if some Master GMATters who have cracked it also participate to enlighten us.

This thread primarily focusses to bring along the people @Hyd to discuss, share and help. We can help each other with discussions, materials and experiences.

I have kickstarted it...lets pursue it to achieve the best...

Hey Venom thats a good idea .. I am sure there a lot of us from Hyd planning to take GMAT.

It will be grt to share our knowledge and resources.

You guys cud add me to ur group :D.
AM interested in taking the GMAT.

AM IN :D.

Regards,
DC.

Welcome aboard guys!! So we are sailing on the same ship :-)

A quick question... I have not been able to lay my hands on a copy of OG 11ed. at any book stores @Hyd. Could you guyz point me to a shop where I can get this book?

Any updates on this one? OG availability in hyderabad?
BTW, im planning to give the GMAT sometime in sep-Oct.

Hi guys .. I am from hyd ... me plannning to take the test too .... havent decided when though.

Just to share my pov ... After I did some research and here is what I have generally concluded:

On the test:
VA - Usually as hard as OG
QA - Harder than OG if you are targeting a high score

Prep material:
VA - Spidy/Sahil notes (found on TestMagic forums), OG
QA - This is where you need Kaplan (the GMAT book as well as K800) as they have the tougher questions. And OG

Full length tests: Idea is to get the stamina required for the duration of the test and not to estimate the score on G-day. The more you can take .. the better.

Also, for people who are yet to get started on figuring out the prep strategy, these might be helpful:

There is a dude whos put together a nice page with all the resourses that you will ever come across for GMAT ... the link to his page is here:
http://home.comcast.net/~dave.kim/index_files/Page423.htm

He has also written a "GMAT Study Strategy" page ... which I think is pretty neat. The link to this page is available on the page I have linked above.

With a more desi pov ... there is a GMAT_FAQ document that PshycoD has prepared, you can find the link to it in his signature on most posts. Its a very helpful piece too.

HTH

Zilch,

That was an useful post. The link really has enormous info.

Btw, have you been able to grab a copy of OG 11ed? Could you point me to any stores @Hyd where its available?

Thanks,
Venom.

I tried a lot to get the OG 11th Ed myself, but I couldnt get it. The options that I saw at the end were:
# Order from mba.com or amazon.com
# Order at a book stall and wait for the copy to arrive (ext time 3 weeks)

But after reading a few posts about the content of the 11th Ed in comparison with the 10th ... I feel it hasnt got much (IMHO) ... and after pondering a lot whether its worth the 1600 (est.) price I kinda voted against it and have planned to go with the 10th one.

Whsat say you guys?

The posts about OG 11ed do mention the overlaps between 10ed and 11ed. It further mentions the newer edition is better compiled. I still feel OG 10ed will be not much of a compromise.

Surprisingly, I could not grab a copy of that either!! Could you?

Hey guys I think it will be a better idea to order for OG 11th online. OG10th has retired GMAT question , but they wudld be real old and OG11th will have comparatively more recent questions.

Also the explanation in OG 11 seems to be better.

Well 10th seems to be out of stock at most book stalls too ... I presume you are talking about the Original print. But there are these photocopied-spiralbound-avatars that are available. An original might cost you 1400 or so .. but this comes at about 400 odd. Also, the original is mostly never bought-back by the store, whereas they are mostly willing to take back the pirated copies ... though I dont see the logic in that!

Availability ... I faced some problems too ... but I was promised by most stalls at Koti (hope you are familiar with the place) that they could arrange it within a day (pirated copy). And personally I have no qualms using a pirated copy ... ppl can choose to differ with that.

But moi the impatient types ... so I just hooked up with some pals and took one copy from them as soon as they were done with their test ... I should have been equally eager to read at least the first page of the book ... but I havent done that yet !!! All I had to offer in return was some essay editing services ... not to mention ... havent done that either 😃 ... not yet atleast.

But IMH study plan ... OG figues towards the end. I agree it is a bible ... but you better get ultra-super-religious first to be able to get the depth and breadth of concepts like GOD and the nature of human life. TRANSLATION: Learning tricks and tactics from OG has two drawback:
# Its too unstructured to be a great way to learn the approach we need to take towards problem types. Which is best done by more structured and somewhat advanced books like Kaplan. So you get the approach from there and fine tune it to what ETS is going to throw at you using OG ... again ... this is my impression from reading high-scorer opinions ... I havent used OG yet.
# You are already done with your most imporatnt practice material.

A 790 scorer, TwinSplitter from the TestMagic forums quotes another guy in his post saying ... Kap. is like an athelete training at altitude so that the real thing is easier by comparison. And I tend to agree.

But my issue right now is beyond getting books ... I am just not giving time to my prep ... all I am doing for GMAT is disbursing gyan at forums ... if anyone has faced the work-gmat-timebalance issue and has some pointers ... plese share them here.

zilch,
those were some very useful posts! thanks a ton mate.

I am planning to take GMAT by April, haven't started prep yet. I will definitely update my progress on this thread and if you guys ever plan to meet up or exchange material then involve me as well.

As of now, I am planning to buy Princeton Review and Kaplan to kick-start my prep. I'll scout for other books as and when needed, since I have observed that if I get too many books I don't use any ;).

I am not aware of any source of GMATPREP cd's.
For the OG 11ed hunters, I could find the book in Koti book market, priced between Rs 1500-1600. There are limited copies available, guess 2 in my knwledge. Also, the xerox copies are available @Rs 550-700.
