Hi,

I gave my GMAT exam yesterday and scored 680(Q 49,V 34). This was my third attempt and had scored 640 and 650 in the previous 2 attempts.

My average score in the Kaplan practice CATs this year was 718 and I scored 740 in GMATprep.

10th %age- 81(CBSE),12th %age-72(CBSE) and B.Tech %age-71.33(UPTU).

I have a total 5.8 years of work experience(Indian IT company with 14 months in Mexico) and I was targeting executive mba at IIMs, XLRI and ISB.

Now, with this score should I think of applying to the above mentioned schools. Also, should I try for NUS, Singapore.

Any suggestions are welcome.

With 680 you are slightly off the mark for ISB & NUS. For the IIMs your work ex will be a little low.

But I still feel if you apply in Round 1 to ISB you may stand a chance it you write good essays and have a good interview.

You may want to post on the ISB thread to get better advice on ISB:

IIMs and ISB may be a little tough but you should definitely look at Schools like NUS & NTU. With more than 5 years of work exp and international exposure, you can definitely try at a few other Schools. You could get in touch with us through the Private Message for a discussion on the same.

@tarun007kaushik - both are possibilities. Depends on what are your career objectives and what are your expectations from the MBA/MS - both in terms of academics and profession.

An MBA will enhance your knowledge about business, whereas an MS degree will be more technical, related to the field in which you do the MS. You will have to decide what will be more beneficial for your career goals.

MBA and MS are two different career scopes. It is your call whether you like to be in technical oriented roles where you would be an individual contributor or you would lik e to be  in management oriented roles where you would deal with business decisions and decision involving a  team or a business unit's performance.

@bardock Given the schools you're thinking of applying to and your GPA, you will need a higher score than 710 to land an admit and be considered for aid. The GMAT is only one of the components which is scrutinised, but it is an important one! 710 was your first attempt, so you're very likely to push your score up by another 30-40 points if you work towards it. And a score closer to 740 or so will make all the difference at some of the ambitious schools you're thinking of applying to. Good Luck and God Bless!!

Also, is there a link where I can check which colleges require TOEFL exam so I can plan whether I need to give TOEFL or not. Thanks.!

Hi,

I have just given my GMAT and got a score of 750 (Q- 50, V-41).

I have been working for over 3 years now as a market intelligence executive at a leading consumer durables (electrical goods) firm in  India, wherein I have taken care of the strategy of the entire company as well as sales intelligence and analysis. I have worked with the Top management over this period, and that has required me to constantly demonstrate leadership.

I have a B.Tech degree from YMCA university of Science and Technology (a haryana govt. undertaking) with a 7.0 CGPA.

I am very passionate about mountain cycling and have even travelled from Manali to Leh on a cycle (one of the toughest routes in the world). I have also managed groups of 100-150 professionals during offsite meetings, with a team of 3-4.

I feel that my UG record will hinder my chances. Need someone to please evaluate my profile and advise me about the schools I can apply for...

Hi @amson

I like your profile - seems like you have done some impressive work at your company. You have a good GMAT score, although my only concern is your average GPA from a not very well known university.

I have heard of people doing the Leh road on motor-bikes, but cycling there sounds far more interesting. You can invoke some attributes like grit, perseverance, tenacity (there is a Kellogg question based on these) for the essays.

I would say, focus upon the positives, and you do have quite a few of those.

Strong profile @amson! The only thing that seems lacking is international exposure. Kellogg can be targeted but is going to be difficult. School selection is not just about picking the top 5 marketing schools from a certain ranking. It requires detailed research in terms of geography, financing options, class profile etc. Each school has a personality, and it must match yours. Read the Kellogg student interview on our EssaySunday website to understand better.

@ISBmantra.com: I have in-fact worked on strategy for the exports division of the company as well. We had dealt with clients such as TheHomeDepot, Does that help?

Also, I wish to start a business in the future focus on the rural markets of India, and would thus like to work in FMCG companies in regions of APAC (Maybe Africa and Middle East as well). What Geography would you thus suggest?

Hello. I am a B.com graduate, planning to take the GMAT exam next year, by which time I would have completed 15 months working in the Income Tax department for the Central Government of India. However, my scores in class X, XII and graduation have been, to put it bluntly, really poor. Could anyone shed some light over the GMAT score I need to obtain in order to make B-schools overlook my poor grades and relatively lesser work experience?

I am looking for a score of 720-plus, which is what I usually get in the mock tests. Which are the B-schools (non-American) that I should look into?

Thanks.

Hi Jai, a good GMAT score for a 2-year MBA in the USA can be in the range of 680-780.  You good keep your options of applying to schools like Harvard Business School and MIT (Sloan) to name a few.

jaiganesh1989

Is just  over a 2 year work experience enough to get into a 2 year MBA profram in USA?

mba-help
MBA Decoder @mba-help 1.0 k

@jaiganesh1989 - depends upon what b-schools you are targeting and what you have to offer to them. Almost all b-schools prefer applicants with 4-6 years of work experience but they do take in applicants with lesser work experience (less than 3 years at the time of joining is extremely rare) if you have something interesting/exceptional to offer to them, by way of your profile.

So if you are not in a hurry, work another year and get into the MBA game once you have a stronger professional profile.

If you think you have performed very well over the MS (academics and extra curricular) and the work, then it may be worthwhile applying this year.

You can share your resume with us at contact@mbadecoder.com for an analysis.

chances of getting into the top B Schools with a 2 yr work exp would be very rare, unless you have an exceptional profile. consider working for a year before your MBA goals. You will have to target a score of 700 and above to get into top B Schools.

@divya2304  - Sorry Divya- I read your work experience as 2 years 01 months - I have been staring at the laptop screen to long and too hard

So please ignore the MiM comment- but my new concern now is that you will have to get a reign on your time schedule. If you take GMAT in November, you will still have the R2 deadlines open for you  - make a time plan and stick to it otherwise if you are planning to apply to 5-6 b-schools, its going to get out of hand.

You should do your profiling exercise now (which means putting down everything about you on paper) so that you do not start teh process only in November

Hi @Score-matters! We were busy with the Wharton-Oxford-Duke workshops over the weekend. :)

Schools ask for full-time employment after your graduation. If you were involved full-time, it should ideally be considered as work experience, though the designation will have an impact on how they rate your experience. So it should not effect the quantity, but the quality. What have you been doing from April 2013 to March 2014 by the way?

Paid full time work experience should be considered. If you are in doubt, you could also write to the Admissions committee of the  B School you are applying to. In the trend you have mentioned, you have already been in 3 assignments. It would be good to stick to a particular assignment/job before a decision for applying to ISB or any other B School

Your work experience is not less in quantity to target the top 15 US b-schools. But yes, your GMAT score is a little lower.

Your candidacy at any b-school will  depend upon your profile which includes your work related and extra curricular achievements, your career goals and your need for an MBA. Please throw some light on these for us to give you a more detailed answer.

Hi guys this is Vishal. I am a BMS graduate.

I have an query regarding work experience and ngo.

Is working with ngo required for a strong  profile?

Reason is that my work does not leaves me with time for NGO's

I have worked as Mergers and acquisition associate for 13 months.

Currently working as Associate consultant in infrastructure and public policy domain. My job involves lots of inter state travelling and  international travelling. We advise governments on infrastructure and policy making.

Can my work experience fill the gap for me lacking ngo work experience since my job is related to society?

Does for an Indians having non IT work experience have some edge?

I am planning to give GMAT in 2015 and start my MBA (Consulting) from 2016 or 2017.

Target: Tuck, Darden, Ross.

Thanks and Regards,

Hi @hardilsarao2213! Taking GRE or GMAT depends on how much time you have in hand. If you have enough to start afresh then GMAT stands as a better option, but if you have just enough time to retake the test with some extra effort, GRE should be the way to go. Don't worry about schools not accepting GRE. There are enough number of options through GRE as well if you are able to secure a good score.

A GMAT score above 700 with an AWA of 5 would be desirable to get into top B Schools. But as already pointed out, the decision for appearing for GMAT/GRE should be based on the time and preparation that you can afford.
