Hi Friends,

My exp is abt 3 yrs and GMAT score is 640.. Excellent acadmics and good progression at work..
What are my chances to ISB? Should i retake the test? Are there any bettter colleges then ISB with this score even if at abroad?

Ashish

I'd like to say "Don't retake, it's simply not worth your while", but if I were being honest, to give yourself a real fighting chance at ISB, even with a very strong profile overall, I'd look at a GMAT of 680+.

Then again, you only mention 3 years WE, but don't mention in what, so please disregard the above if you are an astronaut/marketing guru/military/you get the idea - Non-IT. My opinions strictly.

If you are talking specifically about ISB, I would suggest you retake it. I think this year ISB had a cutoff of around 690 (check on ISB's site to get the exact figure).

If you think you can score more in the GMAT, then you should give it once more. All the parts of application should be to ones best ability. Low GMAT will not necessarily keep you out.

Well If u r confident about ur profile and Academic record, you can still scrap through to ISB. However it is a bit difficult.

The important point is Try applying in Round 1. In Round 2 with such a low GMAT chances are very slim.

Now I will share profiles of some of my friends who got accepted into ISB this year if that can help you make a decision.

1. GMAT - 760 Work-Ex 2 years (IT-M) Acads - Average Selected R1

2. GMAT - 660 Work-Ex 6 years (IT-M) Acads - Average Rejected R2

3. GMAT - 680 Work-Ex 2 years (Finance-F) Acads - Good Accepted R2

4. GMAT - 720 Work-Ex 2 years (IT-M) Acads - Avg Rejected R2

5. GMAT - 690 Work-Ex 2 years (IT-M) Acads - Good Accepted R1

Subodh,

Thank you for your advice...

Ashish

Aashish,
GMAT score is not the only criterion at isb. I know of a person who had just 690 and 2 yrs workex but then he had a very good academic record and a good plan charted out for the future. The interview probably did the trick for him. So good luck!

Adding a friend's details:
GMAT 760 - Work ex 3.5 yrs (IT) Acads - Avg, Extracurriculars - good (member of professional rock band + other activities) - waitlisted in R2.
The point is - ISB is extremely cometitive - maybe the most competitive school in its category in the world right now (if you consider acceptence rate). A good GMAT score (680 +) would definitely help.

I would definitely agree, GMAT is not the only thing but probably one of the most important things for ISB, a 680+ GMAT score is an absolute must if you are not from a very diverse background and work profile...

P.S.: Well, I don't think you should have opened this thread in the first place... individual queries should be posted in relevant forums...

Abish,I got an admit with a GMAT score of 610. I didn't give myself any chance with that score. But i guess what did the trick for me was diversity(CA), 8 yrs WE,kind of WE, your career goal and how you have worked towards it.All these should come up in your essays.Lastly the confidence one shows at the interview also counts.

Hey ...

I am a B.Tech Chemical Grad, with a GPA of (9.0/10) from VIT, Vellore(good univ but not that great)
At School - got a good percentage but no extraordinary perfomance.
Was involved in a lot of sports and games at school level but nothing at college.
Right now have an exp of 2 yrs in IT.

Please let me know what are my chances for ISB, if this profile gives a total shut down in the first go ... or please let me know if there is something i can work towards it starting now.. like certifications in certain courses etc etc offered outside.

Hi Swirl ;

may be u r very new to the site and everything !!
Ur GPA is good ... Now it's lot more complicated than simple yes or no !!

Ur GMAT score , anything above 680 will be sufficient.. the more the better !!

Ur work expericne.. ur learning and noteworthy contributions at work !!! evryone will have , just think abt them and sort them ... becoz many a times we never recognize our contribution.. however small still significant !!!

Ur personal growth : show ur growth other than work, ....

And finally ur Interview...

People with 650 score have made it to Harvard... so there is no absolute mesuring system...
on a whole u need to impress them ...
THINK abt them..

Stright ans to u r question : nobody can tell unless u try ... but there are few things mentioned above which u can try !!!

Hey thanks Vamsi,
true,im new to this site,,, will catch up soon. 😃 😃
y i was asking these ques were because i was really confused abt the direction i need to take.
I wanted to give GMAT and check out my chances, but before that i wanted to make sure i wont be stuck in a puddle after writing the exam due to monetary reasons. As the MBA education abroad costs so much and people say repaying the loan amt is very difficult.(am not talkin abt top univs here, as i know the top ones cost too much).
ISB is obviously the only indian institute which accepts GMAT, and definitely a great one too, and i heard its entrants need killer profiles to make it through. So if i can get started on working towards it what do i need to do ??
Are there any other certifications etc that i can obtain to direct my line , as u can see they ll probably ask me y i did chemical and worked in IT and then now want an MBA.

Yes there will always be a question as to why chemical... IT ( but many Mbas are career switchers )...
Top MBA's are very costly but normally its not the toughest to repay them ... but yeah it depends a lot on ur personal choices....

QApart from ISB , SP Jain also accepts GMAT for 1 yr mba...

ISB is a great school but there isnt anything like killer profiles !!
To be precisee .. they are competitive profiles...

There are many certifications u can try for.. to show that u are a serious learner !!
for ex in IT sector : quality, .net, Microsoft, sun cerifications.. etc...

If u r really looking for ward to do mba get involved in extra curricular activites and contribute towards them...

if u need any other clarifications feel free to pm or call me 9885213625
