What they want to hear when they ask tell me about yourself or why mba?pls help

All they want to hear is "about yourself". You should be able to articulate your introduction for about 4-5 minutes( the panel should stop you, ideally). Its a very open ended question and can be quite useful to steer the interview your way but can be disastrous too, so prepare on it well. You can start with your background and then move into your work life (if you have experience) or your hobbies and interest. You can easily state something on which you want the panel to ask you a question.
As to why MBA, this is the question you ought to be clear about. You need to know what is it that MBA can provide you and how that would be useful for your life and how does MBA connect with what you have done in the past. You can also mention a particular field in case of BM. But then be ready to defend yourself, cause you can expect a lot many questions on why this field etc etc, same goes for HR. HR call-getters can easily expect why HR and yes the lamest answer you can give to that is I like working with people...........

ITs perfectly alright to say you have no idea of what specialization you want to do and that you want to gain more information and knowledge before embarking onto something, but you should have "some" going knowledge of various fields.........and should be clear on the WHY MBA part. Prepare this question well because you would be asked why do you want to do MBA without working in an organisation and straight after your grad

i have 20 months work-ex as of now. regarding specialization i feel i have an inclination towards strategic management (SM) but can't be sure as i don't have much idea about the others...should i say the same (having done some homework in SM) in the PI ?

also can you suggest some resources for strategic management?

I have got my BM PI on 24th,I m going to a project site for company work on 24th morning n dont know when I ll come back. I went thru the prev year threads n i havent heard of XL changing the dates. I will call the admissions office tomorrow, but getting really tense any chance that XL considers genuine requests. Is PI clashing with work travel considered a genuine request?

Call the admission office asap.Tell them the genuine reason and ask them to prepone the interview. But chances are thin that they will consider this request.

Admissions office is very reluctant about change in dates

Hey Puys,
I have received my BM call letter ( Hr is NOT mentioned in letter)
The interview is at Mumbai on the 25th at 5 40 pm
XLRI has not asked us to fill up any form
Also, there was no mention of any originals that we need to carry for the interview
The letter was dated on 2/2/12
So I guess you guys should receive it in a day or two

If you have any queries that you need to ask of me , kindly expect a delay in reply. I am in Pune today for my sibm call. Will come home on thursday!

Speak well. Initiate the discussion if you know the subject well. You wont win by being a silent observer of the goings on. Listen to others if you dont know the subject. Support you point with some facts and figures.
Make short contribution of 25-30 seconds 3-4 times. The person who initiates or concludes the discussion gets easily noticed, but take it easy if you just missed out on this. You can still score with intelligent views and appropriate behaviour. Try to lead the GD into a constructive conversation, Making a fish market can hamper the chances of all the aspirants. If its getting chaotic out there, try to manage the group. Ask them to speak one by one. It shows your leadership skill. Disagree politely and agree with what is right.

In the group discussion, you are with people you dont know well. Be alert to sound respectful and avoid anything that may sound offensive to the other people. On the other hand, some other speakers may behave aggressively or sound offensive. Dont take it personally. Stay calm, objective and voice your views/objections respectfully under all circumstances. You score by being coolheaded under provocation.Listen to the subject carefully. Summarize the discussion if the group has not reached a conclusion.

The strict No-No of XLRI GD:
Initiating the discussion if you do not have sufficient knowledge about the given topic.
Arguing and shouting during the GD.
Looking at the evaluators or a particular group member.
Talking irrelevant things and distract the discussion.
Mentioning erratic statistics.
Displaying low self-confidence with shaky voice and trembling hands.
Putting others in an embarrassing situation by asking them to speak if they dont want.

10 points were to be prioritised on a topic like Poverty in Growing Economy
How to make India's judiciary accountable.(7 points were given which were to be ranked individually and by the group).
How to improve India's Bureaucratic efficiency.(9 points were given which were to be ranked individually and by the group)
Economic slowdown and Employee layoff
How land acquisition can be done in a fair manner: consulting with the stakeholders, giving jobs, monetary compensation to displaced people?
The privatization of air travel in India - success or failure?

To convince the panellist that you are suitable for a particular course, make the panellist believe that you really are interested in doing MBA and not here just for the sake of it. Talk about your realistic future goals and objectives. Dont pretend, be yourself. Show them your enthusiasm. Brush up the current affairs well.

For HR:

They may ask you about HR policies. Although I was not asked but I heard that many of the candidates were grilled on the same. So get to know the policies of your companies. You should know the difference in PM and IR. Lastly, you should have a sound idea of why you want to choose HR as your specialization. Generic answers like I love interacting/dealing with people may not be of much help.

For BM:

The first and foremost thing is that you should be clear about your choice of specialization with a strong logical reasoning about the same. For e.g. If you want to choose finance then, you should have a clear idea why you want to select it and all basic finance related terms like mutual funds, investment banking, hedge fund, balance sheet, P&L; account etc. I will suggest you to read newspaper daily from now itself (especially the business page, if you cant read the pink coloured boring ET) Keep yourself informed with the current affairs of at least 6 months prior to date.
Some generic question (prepare them well):
Why MBA?
Tell us about yourself.
Why BM/HRM?
Strength and weakness
Short term and long term goals
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
One reason that we should not select you? (can be very tricky)
Tell us about a challenging situation that you faced? How did you resolve it?

Interests and Hobbies Be prepared! Questions as basic as Why do you do poetry (or any other activity may be asked.

Appreciate the efforts/time you are putting for helping juniors , I have a small query
I was going thorough XL placement brochure (http://www.xlri.ac.in/downloads/XLRI%20Placement%20Brochure.pdf). For BM 09-11 batch (page no. 37) , it mentions graduation college of 51% of the batch as 'IIT' , but after going through profiles I find hardly 8-10 guys from IIT's ( including IT-BHU !). am I missing something ?

Guys jiska darr tha wahi hua...my XL-BM and IIM K interview clashing on 25th feb..since XL wont entertain any request for interview date change so I should beg IIM K for the same , is it? ..Please confirm anyone

IIM K changed the timings for one guy in our batch, if it's in same city you can give one in morning & other in evening. No big deal.

However if you want some rest they might also change the date, many IIMs did it last year I don't know specially about IIM-K

Why are the seniors getting instigated at such trivial issues and deciding to stay away from answering queries.

I think this is a way of giving back to a forum which i think most of us have benefitted from over time.

Why do you have to take the L & XL comparison personally. If a junior asks me if he should choose Civil at IIT Delhi to Comp Scee at BITS i would give him a holistic view and not take it personally irrespective of where i study.

These are too silly issues for all of us to be wasting our time on and let's resolve to some constructive discussions by which we can project a very positive image of the support framework that exists at XLRI.
I am sure it exists, let's live up to it.

The very fact that we are replying to the queries with full dedication should imply that we haven't taken it personally, plus we have lots at hand to be bothered by such issues. As far as the rivalries are concerned we reply back to only rivals as they are the best person to argue with rather than just about anybody

That ought to be on the XLRI form you filled, so if you have kept the photostat, you can see it there.

Can you please advice on the GD/PI prep for XLRI (both BM and HRM)? I mean apart from the usual economic and academic topics, anything different on which we need to put emphasis for XLRI?

There is no GD for BM ( i have written that in bold cause many of you would have that query)
For HR the GD tropics can be found on the last year's threads. The GD topics were from the current happenings and were fairly simple ( most of you would have practiced those at your coaching centre).
Stay in touch with the latest happenings and unless your vocab is very bad or you are not aware of the PM of India is I see no reason why any of you should not fare well in an XL GD

Understand it, you are not doing any favor, you are just taking first step to build good relations with your to be juniors and this should be the good enough motivation for you.

watch your words there mate. why don't you take a hike and move on to the IIML thread. We would rather help those who appreciate it. We are not gettin paid to maintain "good relations". Hope you Understand it.

I meant you can ask your college to have a make up exam for you.....
changing interview location and date is not possible.
But still don't hurry into conclusions and rather than worrying about somethings you have no control on concentrate on your prep......
worry about these issues when you receive your letter, hopefully the two won't clash

HR is nit just someone who recruits/manages salary/compensation/exit. Its a very diverse field and has immense potential. It is a wrong perception that HR is the field where anyone can get into and you don't need much specialization. But HR goes way beyond the simple activities that you mentioned. HR roles that you may get can be easily divided into 3
1. Corp HR
2. IR
3.Consultants

Each of these is a diverse field in itself and offers multitudes of roles.
As the organizations mature, HR practices also mature. The HR function is at three different states in its evolution cycle where it starts as a Business Function, becomes a Business Partner and then a Strategic Partner. In each of these cases the role and impact of the HR department becomes progressively more strategic in nature.
At the very least, when an HR function is available in an organization, it is responsible for managing employee data, takes care of payroll, time and attendance and the setting of company policies.

The role is largely that of Personnel Administration focused on Compliance both internal & external, and on Management of employee records.

As a Business Partner, the role of HR is to meet the "existing business needs" of the organization so that the organization could grow at a measurable rate.

At this stage of evolution, the focus of the HR shifts to competency based Recruitment, Total Compensation, Employee Development, Communication and Organization Design.

The HR function helps in formalizing the organization structure (who does what and reports to whom). Once that is complete, the next role is that of identifying the skills necessary for different job roles. HR further helps in defining appropriate training programs that are necessary for developing these skills, recruitment techniques to evaluate the skill levels and benchmarking the skill database against industry standards and competitors.

Total compensation (payroll and benefits) also becomes a focus area where the HR helps the organization attract and retain skilled employees by becoming a leader in compensation management.

Using the skill database and the organization structure, the HR function iteratively evolves compensation practices, improves the training function and makes the recruitment function more attuned to the skills needed by the organization.

To facilitate the above functionality, HR uses tools such as Applicant Tracking software for recruitment, Employee Portal for communication, Self Services for employees empowerment, Learning Management Systems for training & development and an Employee Database for capturing employee skills & competency profiles. Organizations even have well defined Job Descriptions with details of qualifications, experience, special skills required for the job and job roles & deliverables for each job position.

We have found that at this stage most organizations prefer some degree of automation and are using tools either built internally or procured from vendors. Another characteristic of organizations at this level of maturity is the break-up of the HR function into sub-functions such as Training, Personnel Administration, Recruitment and Compensation & Benefits, each being partly dependent on the other.

HR as a Strategic Partner

Organizations that view their HR as a strategic business partner believe in full maturity of their HR function. Such organizations are focused on attaining leadership positions rather than an year-on-year growth. Bottom-line and top-line growth are expected to be achieved automatically.

At this level, HR becomes responsible for identifying core competencies necessary for their organization to attain leadership position. Further HR facilitates in

* Aligning employees to a common set of objectives derived from the mission and value statements,
* Mitigation of risk by devising appropriate Succession Planning Strategies,
* Identification of top-performers and non-performers,
* Continuous measurement of the effectiveness of leadership and employee satisfaction,
* Increasing employee engagement through appropriate measures,
* Aligning compensation to performance,
* Adjustment of recruitment and training to competency gaps,
* And specifying well-defined Job Descriptions, which map to the organization structure. These become the basis of Recruitment, Goal Setting, Training, Performance Evaluation and Career Development.

As a strategic partner HR uses a variety of automation tools for Learning Management, Employee Performance Management, Compensation Planning, Recruitment and On-boarding, Succession Planning, Alignment and Employee feedback.

The admissions office doesn't entertain requests for change of interview dates. So have a backup plan in place.

I believe that the topic of discussing spam calls etc is hardly relevant. Infact, most of these numbers are given by the coachings to XYZ institutes.

Request all including aspirants and XLRI seniors to move on from such trivial topic...

You are doing it because you were also helped by the seniors last year and hence it's now your responsibility. Isn't that the part of XL culture?

Understand it, you are not doing any favor, you are just taking first step to build good relations with your to be juniors and this should be the good enough motivation for you.

Instead of getting pissed off by random queries, you can simply ignore them.

P.S. Even now, if you feel that you have gone extra mile to help us out then please have a look at IIM C/L thread and the kind of queries people came up with the form of IIML. Not to forget the mentorship program where each one of us call-getters have a dedicated mentor. I am not into comparison and seniors are free to guide us in any possible way but this attitude was uncalled for and will set bad examples.

The seniors do it not because someone else did for them sometime back and not because they want to build good relations (which by the way are the best among all the Indian B-schools and the examples that you have given do not even compare to the bonding that exists here at XLRI), they do it because they know they were in similar position last year. We simply do not want anyone to miss out on an opportunity of a lifetime just because of lack of information. And yeah to make things more clear, it definitely is not our RESPONSIBILITY. The attitude was inspired after a host of queries that can blow off the head of any patient sage ( and I am not just referring to queries that are posted here). But it seems you guys can manage things on your own and advice is just about the last thing you need. All the best to all of you and hope you all get through all the hurdles left and emerge out successfully.

There is no incentive for any of us to volunteer here and answer your queries. We are just doing this because we were in similar situation last year and we don't want to see anybody missing out due to lack of information/guidance. senoirs need your help...
my corresspondence address has changed and i called up the admission dept to inform the same but the lady sitting there replied that the letters have been despatched and nothing could be done unless the letter comes back to her.i've no one who can collect the letter from the prevoius corresspondence address.what should i do??
will i be able to sit for the gdpi??i am worried...please help.

I think there i still lot of time left. But to be on the safer side, I would advice you to call the admission department and ask the consignment number of the letter.Once you know the details, ask any of your friend/relative who live in that city, to collect the letter from the courier office.
