look dude ops is there in every funtion od an organisation whether its IT, consrtruction or for that matter any domain.. With an MBA in hand ur destinction as civil, mechanical and etc becomes minimal and ur remain as a trained techno buisness manager(if ur an enginner)... so u can push forward in any domain...

with 3 yrs exp u can expect a profile of a sr consultant comin ur way at SIOM for that matter... others i cant comment... so thats how ur exp helps..

lookin at ur field the entire organisation is field with ops work from geting to improve ur supply chain for men, material etc to managing and streamling the entire process associated with it... depending whether ur in the office level or site level ops things differ.. u would know better thn me dude... mostly consulting firms related with construction benefit from ur expertise...

As far as Operations/ SCM is concerned APICS is the only institution that carries weightage and recognition in industries. You can also go for Six Sigma Certification from KPMG and likes if you are interested in quality control.:clap:

This is just the thread i was looking for.. Am very keen to pursue a career in OPs, am a B.Tech(ECE) 2009 passout. My mock scores are ranging from 90 to 95 %ile. I have come to know that NITIE is the best insti for the course. Apart from that, which other insti should i apply to, considering that am expecting CAT percentile something around 95 %ile??

A good number of people from Bschools with established Operations and Supply Chain Mgmt dept write the CPIM, CSCP tests in tandem with their usual course curriculum. For individual modules in CPIM, on an avg an effort of 50hrs is required. I dont think taking out that much time is too difficult.

hi,thanks for your invaluable feedback.i had just given my CPIM BSCM exam few days back.i was more interested in CSCP but got to know that CSCP can be done by people who have atleast 2 years of relevent expereince or who have already done with their CPIM.

with my MBA running with full speed ,hardly get time to study for my CPIM,just wanted to know if people in MBA are pursuing CPIM along with thier regular curriculam and whats thier approach with this certification.

Both the certifications hold different value proposition. CPIM deals with the intricacies of inventory and production management with the concepts of scheduling and resource planning stealing the show. CSCP takes a holistic view of Supply chain management and IT implementation part.
So if you looking at a career in Manufacturing, CPIM is a good choice. But from a consulting point of view, CSCP holds the edge.

let me take further question in a new post cause too long a post actually becomes too boring... so no that u hae understood that Ops is in every field in the industry whether its in manufacturing or logistics or health care or IT or Banking or BPO or finacial sector or or or and or.... u also need to understand that we have our presence in very dept of an organisations... thus we have ops in marketing, ops in HR etc...

However lemme tell u that we are more of specialist than generalist.. ANd SIOM churns our techno-business managers who are super-specialists... Still u will find people here who are inclined towards becoming a generalist so that they can play with more fields, however u can already see that future belongs to specialists and not to generalists... and all who are more generalists shouls understnd that as climb up the corporate ladder the speacialisation soon vanishes... Right??

2.What do you actually learn in Operations management ??
In operations mangagement we study to deal with all the things i mentioned above... for the course curriculam u need to check the individual websites of the colleges offering ops.....

Try NITIE's and SIOM's website...
cause they deal in insustrial and ops management exclusively.... Both aew almost the same...

3.is it the whole operation of a company or something regarding that ?
The organisations is ours to play with, as we climb up the ladder...

2. pressures from both finance and marketing teams(ending up as a scapegoat)

I truely appreciate and respect ur concern.... however u mus also understand that every year along the same time newbies come into PG nad have no idea on how things work out here.. i was the same last year... Besides that this thread was started for people to discuss certain issues regarding Ops management... i m nt here to promote anything but m lookin for some genuine discussion with people who are in the field or interested in the field.. and instead of starting a new thread each time i want info on this, i would want people to come in and talk here itself...

No other forum atracts as many visitors as PG, thus we have more no. of people visiting with the right kinda experience... so i find no reason for MODS to disagree with my effort to string up a few people who might be also new out here to bring this thread alive, cause i believe threads are not created to be wasted...

still if u feel that its a waste of time for PG then i would surely rest my case....and thanks for the warning... i would appreciate it better when MODS send in a PM or post here itself citing thier apprehensions... cause that would be a more genuine concern and i would be able to understand PG and its functions better...

Hi vinod , for ops in IT and service industry there are multiple profiles available depending upon the companies requirements and ur profile too.. U could be a specialist, business analyst etc.. However it depends upon what type of profile u are looking for.. u should understand that ops is the heart of a business unit and pumps in to every functional areas available...

Well I am definitely one of them! I request all those who are into ops and who plan to take it this year, to please join in and keep the thread going.
I wish people who are already into ops to please guide us about the various requisites to get into the top institutes and which are the top institutes providing ops? NITIE, IIMs, JBIMS ............??

i understand ur concern about choosing a B school which is good at OPs.
But don't prepare for MBA exams n apply for only those intitutes.
I am telling you, I was just like you last year.
But after coming here, I understood that the decision of choosing a specialisation depends on many other parameters. Now, I am open for all the specialisations.

First, prepare well for the test, GD & PI. Don't think of any specialisation as of now (I am assuming that you don't have any experience in Operations related work)

And anyway, all the institutes that u mentioned above require a good CAT percentile anywhere from 97 percentile to 99.99 percentile. That everybody knows. So, pls keep the same in mind before starting new thread.

Alternatively, what you could have done was to visit the NITIE thread and asked the same question there.

Good luck for your future endeavors..
