As a senior Manager i would note these points before i decide my course of action -

* Mr. Singh has been into sales for over 5 years, it means he has a lot of on field experience. It has to be a one-of-case, when such an experienced man who has been in this business for a long time, make the mistke of yelling at a client, that too on his training visit.
* I would also take into consideration his earlier profile (what kind of sales was he into?), because certian products require agressive marketing, like space selling or government sales.
* Also it is important to note that Mr.Singh has just swithched jobs and after 6 weeks he might be a little edgy to get started.

I would definately not sack Mr.Singh for the very first mistake he commits.
I would rather recomend him for a 2 day training on 'customer handling & orientation' just to make him reasize that what he did was not the best way to get on with a customer.
I will encourage him to be outspoken, but not the extent of offending a client.

I would first look into the complete induction program to see if this trend of his behavior was a pattern or just a one off incident...
If it has been a pattern of sorts then i would definitely look forward to apply the suggestion given by the senior sales rep
and
If it was a one off incident , then I would have a one to one with Mr. Singh and then decide on the course of action, which would most probably be something in the lines of a mild rap and a warning

What I understood from the case that Sahay who is a trainee is in ethical dilemma whether to go by his manager's order and make a fake delivery of goods or disobey the manager politely letting him know the consequence.

One more thing which we need to get clear idea, can Mr. Sahay act as a escort? If yes, then it would land him into trouble as the client would like to check the deliverable immediately. And second, if he can't work as escort even though he delivers the good, its ethically wrong to cheat with the client.

Moreover, as Mr Subhdeep is sure about getting the consignment within few days, he should personally talk with the client and inform him about the real scenario. And ask for extra time. And also while delivering the goods he should personally thank the client for extending the time frame and shouldn't charge him the delivery cost. This way he will definitely be winning the customer heart as well as get good and honest name for the company too. Which will be profitable in long run. As a satisfied customer may not bring good market but an unsatisfied customer may spoil the image by making the event public.

Ram should definitely be part of the recruitment process. He must interview Sham as he would interview any other candidate. If and only if Sham is upto the mark, Ram may put in a word for Sham. This way Ram can be sure not have unnecessarily interfered with the recruitment process, and by putting in a word for Sham he has also done justice to his relationship with Sham. In case of a tie, Ram's reference may work in Sham's favour. Since Ram is a respected manager in his company, his reference would definitely be respected by his company. (well i say so because in my ex-company the recruitment personnel would give preference to a candidate who has been referred by an employee of our company. Its a matter of trust and relationship. References were not looked down upon, but actively sought.)

I too reckon that Ram should not refrain from being a part of the interview pannel. On the contrary Ram should definately be there to ensure that only the right set of professionals, who fit into the organization are recruited (Remember this is also his responsibility). Though he should make it very clear to his nephew that he cannot expect any kind of liberty from him & that he will be treated just as equally as another candidate. He (Shyam) would need to prove his worth to the interviewers (including Ram) that he fits the profile offered.

if he is refraining frm attending the interview how can he become an efficient manager??
so i would say firstly he has to know the qualities to be possed by the candidate..if sham is eligible ram has to recruit him,otherwise as he is a manager he can recommend sham to someother company with his influence..thus he can make justice to his personal and proffesional life

First of all we need to address few concerns

1) what is the requirement for which Ram is recruiting and does Sham fits in?
2) If not, does he have competency level to reach up to expectation given proper training?

If Sham fits in perfectly for the requirement he is eligible enough for getting recruited and can sure enough pass from Ram's test and have discussion with the HR for further processes.

But if Ram has a pre notion that sham may not prove to be a good candidate, then he can avoid taking part in the process for sham, and can ask very well one of his colleague to take the interview for Sham, and let his colleague decide if Sham should be recruited or not. In this way he will be able to deal with the ethical concern as well as will save the relationship with relatives.

Mr Reddy works at the govt PWD and earns 3L p.a.
He also works as a LIC agent during his spare time which gives him better returns. He apparantly does very well at selling policies and is so obsessed with the work that he starts marketing the policies even when he is out partying with his wife. Mrs Reddy is fed up with his obsession and gives him an ultimatum; either its your work or its me. Decide fast.
The DO who is the LIC superviser for Mr Reddy is very happy with the business brought in and is in a quandry when Mr Reddy approaches him with the wifes ultimatum.
You are the DO what will be your course of action to resolve this crisis?
Lets discuss and have a solution by tomorrow evening.

As DO , My advice will be:
1. Try to spend quality time with your wife and make her realise that this job u do is to make her wishes come true. Take her out for shopping(that shud help )

2. Try n get her in the LIC agent line. Cos once she is in this line, she too will get a good hang of it and hopefully like this job just the way u (mr. reddy) do.If that doesnt help,try not to talk about LIC, instead talk about her family and things which she want to her.(since the main problem her is Mr reddy talks about LIC everytime)

3. Go for some long vacation. I will tell my tour planners to get in touch with u.

4.In addition to that, I will have a few juniors join u who will help you to do the marketting part so that u can spend that time with your wife.U will need to train them for some time.(Since Mr reddy has the talent in marketting, this skill should be gained by someone else, in case if Mr Reddy decides to leave his LIC agent job)

I was just listening to the posts and decided to post my take on the issue.

Mr. Reddy has taken LIC agency as his part time profession. He already holds a position in PWD. But, looking at his performance and interest, it will not be correct to loose such an important asset. Also, as Mr. DO, I do understand the importance of ultimatum in his personal life. So, I will chalk out the below plan for Mr. Reddy:

- As Reddy has already shown competency as LIC agent. So, loosing him will be like loosing hell lot of business. Also, his personal life holds paramount importance because his professional deliverance is linked with it. So, Mr. Reddy, we are ready to give u an offer of full time job with equal or better remuneration. I am sure that as it has become his interst then, if given a lucrative offer, he can easily turn out to be a valuable asset. Also, taking this as full time career, he will find out some time for his family.

- If he rejects the offer and decided to take it as a part time option only then, I will hold a discussion with him regarding this issue. Making him understand the importance of work - life balance is vital. If nothing works then only, I will lower the target so that he can devote some time to his family. But, as his obsession is not from meeting the targets but from his own iterest , so I don't think this option will work for long.

So, first responsibility of Mr DO is to see how to save the matter getting worse. If he don't take any action, serious consequence will happen which will eventually effect the work. As marketing/socializing needs clear mind without any problem going underneath, Reddy wont be able to do the work properly. Hence I, as "DO" will decrease the target expectation from Reddy and will also tell him to use the free time to have some quality moment with his family. And will also see how Reddy is getting so much of business, if the market is there, hiring an additional part-time staff wont effect the profit and eventually make the business more profitable.

Right now Mr Reddy is working so hard that his wife has started having problems. I beleive increasing the target expectation will really prove to be counter productive. We must also keep in mind that he already has a fulltime job with PwD so the spare time that he gets may be limited. The solution earlier suggested by Dhiraj about reducing the target expectation and exploring avenues for parttimers is a good one, but Mr Reddy is already a part timer.
Since Mr Reddy is apparantly bringing in good business, it is imperative tha the DO retains him. I suggest to present Mr Reddy with a token of appreciation for his hard work. This can be a vacation package for the couple to Goa/ Kulu Manali etc. This way Mrs Reddy may realise the hardwork put in by her husband, they will have a vacation away from work and get to spend real quality time together.
After they return from the vacation, a decision can be made of reducing the target. But it must be kept in mind that since he is a star performer, he must surely be surpassing his present target .

I THINK WE CAN PUT EXAMPLES IN CASE STUDIES.. If So.. here I go..

Take my case, I am working with my father in Safety related and signages business..
Since the time I started working I alwys tend to see the signage and other safety related products whenever I go to mall or multiplex..

So, whenever one gets into a certain type of work and he/she starts taking keen interest, his/her mind can't stop searching for work related things, even though he/she is there to enjoy..

So, DO can explain all this stuff to the man's wife and also advise the man to maintain a balance between his work and leisure...

Before it gets too late (mid feb is when the calls will be out), l am making the assumption that i will get a call. :rockedov: And even if i don't I know my post(and your replies to it) will be helpful to others. So my problem is, I really don't know how to start off preparing for GD-PIs.
I am not sure about what to expect at GIM GD-PIs.
My profile is something like this:
Xth - 81.8% from Delhi, CBSE
XIIth - 79.2% from Delhi, CBSE
B.E. - 60.34% First Class from the University of Pune, in Electronics and Telecom
Work Ex - 22months as a coder. No flashy stuff on the extra curriculars/sports etc. Average achievements, awards n stuff at my workplace. I know why I want to do my MBA and in which stream.So, on the basis of my profile i just wanted to know what all can i expect in the PI?

And also what is the GD process like? Is it more like a GT or a case study or what?

shortlist of diff colls will start coming from jan end . u can expect shortlist of gim in first half of the month . once shortlist comes out of all d colls , u dont hv much time to prepare .... i ll advice u to make full use of this period. brush up ur basics , etc.... each n every min is precious ... u can always discuss things here .... n m sure there would be many ready for it ....

I have a workex of 19 months and have done my Btech CSE and working in an IT company.. would I be expected to know detailed knowledge of subjects in my B-Tech or just their basics... or would my workex and project related questions would be given weightage....

Also is GD/case study and elimination round or everyone who appears in GD gives the PI??

gd is not d elimination round. Ur pi would likely to consist ques from ur current responsibility @ ur company , achievement of urs & value addition from ur side for the company. n yes , do clear ur basics of IT . as i already mentioned they can ask u few very basic n practical ques which ur expected to ans...

i was in d same position as u r ... n first ques in any PI is going to be about 1 yr gap. so prepare it properly . as per acad ques in cse , clear ur basics once... n do concentrate on practical ques .. for example , last yr i was asked following ques regarding my acads-->
why computer get hanged or does not respond?
is 1mbps lan in the college is gud option?
of what material is LAN (outercover) made of ?
what are different type of versions available of vista?
is vista gud option over xp?

these r d few ques tht m able to recollect now......

4. why should we select (or not select) you
5. what are your strengths and weaknesses
6. tell us about your interests and goals in life (where do you see yourself in 5-10 years)
7. one event in your life where you displayed your ability to
--a. handle stress
--b. deliver results
--c. ability to handle people (leadership skills)/ work in team (teamplayer/ team skills)
8. tell us about job responsibilities, achievements and failures at work.

Do they have Case studies every year or some other GD method like group activity?

yes , u can expect ques from ur acad.u being a fresher , ur acad is very imp part in PI ... n ofcourse u need d basic knowledge of the things as well as u should be aware abt some imp concepts/theories of ur grad. abt the imp subjects , i guess jha can throw some light on it ....

last year we had case study . we can not predict anything about this year but most probably it is going to be case study . Case given to u would be based on some real life situations . for example case that i got was about the kirana shop which is loosing business , as most of his business is based upon credit from customers. few more constraints were given and we were suppose to discuss the possible solution . i ll suggest all of u to read more n more as knowledge is d most imp ... if u hv knowledge u can apply it anywhere - case/gd whtever.
