It would have been a great walk if it was early morning but as it was hot afternoon got completely exhausted and drenched in sweat when i reached the college...luckily i had another set of formals ...i had to change ]


GD Topic - MANAGEMENT EDUCATION IS TOO MUCH FOCUSED ON BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

It started with the opening statement. I was the first person of my panel, so really got an odd seat and had to start proceedings. GD went good for me. After everybody's opening statement it became open.I chipped in 3-4 times with valid points. There was no fish market. Most of the members in my panel were silent listeners. After around 10 mins of discussion we concluded with closing statements in the reverse order.


ESSAY

We needed to write a brief essay on whatever we discussed in GD on the topic. 5 mins time was given to us and we were clearly told they will not consider us for the selection if we dont write the essay nicely and not a single second of extra time will be given to us after 5 mins. We should hand over the paper the moment they comes. But unfortunately i dont think they gave us full 5 mins to write. Suddenly they came and asked for my paper. I was unfortunately the first person and had no other options but handed over the paper without making a fuss. I couldn't complete the last sentence but whatever little i wrote till that point was decent...donno what will happen because of this. Could see others went on writing till their turn came to submit. Felt bad that time.


PI

P1(Sodhi Sir) and P2 (an elderly gentleman) were the two professors who took the interview. P1 (Sodhi Sir) asked most of the questions to me.As I was the first person in my panel I had to go in first.

Went in asked permission to sit and then it went kinda like below

P1- Consider yourself unlucky being the first person? (smiles everywhere)
Me- I could only smile to this and ultimately said no sir not like that ultimately everyone had to say in GD.. (then again smiles everywhere)
P1- So did you have your lunch?
Me- Yes sir, I had it in the canteen.
P1- So did you like the food in the canteen?
Me- yes it was nice.
P1- Its new and not fully functional at the moment
Me- (So adding to that i said)..Sir probably its because seniors are not there in the campus. Ordered chicken but dint get it on time ..
P1-(Smilingly)Yes your seniors have gone for internship... So Avishek Tell us something about yourself.
Me- Blah blah blah...(Which included my hobbies..playing guitar and travelling)
P1- So you like to travel...what are the places you have been?
Me- Told the names of all the places i have been to both in North India and South India. Which included Kedranath, Badrinath....to kerala..to unconventional places like Masinagudi (Tiger reserve near ooty)...Sir, I save some amount of money from my salary for the purpose of travel every month (Both P1 and P2 smiled).
I continued- Sir I have never got the chance to visit rajasthan only as yet. Its too far from my work place (Chennai) so couldnt go. I would definitely like to visit there.
P2- So then how come you have been to Kedarnath and Badrinath ?
Me- Sir they are religious places, accompanied my grandfather and grandmother there. (They started laughing)...with all smiles I said sir I developed my intent towards traveling from those tours.
P2- So in which location of TCS are you working??
Me- Chennai
P1- So what about the food in Chennai?? You like them?? (dicy qtn needed to curb my inner insticts)
Me-Sir I like Ootappam and Rava Dosa....and sir once you start having idly with sambar...slowly but surely you will get accustomed to it...
P1- Hmmm ...so what other hobbies do you have?
Me-Sir I love music,I play guitar.
P1- No something serious than those ?
Me- Sir Reading Books. (bit dangerous for me here...as i really dont read many serious english books barring one or two...my list includes all Bhagat specials,I too had a love story and books like that)
P1- So what type of books do you read?
Me- Sir, i started my reading habits with good books written in Bengali (my mothertongue), then once Bhagat started writing books in English i started reading them as those books kinda drew me...then slowly slowly the interest developed within me and I did read books of various authors at different point of time.
P1-So which was the last book you read.
Me- (dimag ki batti glew up ) Sir Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald Dahl.
P1- Roald Dahl...!!!..so can you tell me the theme of the story?
Me- Went on with the story ....Both of them listened to the storye with interest. After 5-6 minutes of monologue I was done.
P1- With smiles...so you said you have done your B.Tech right?
Me - yes Sir.
P1- Which discipline??
Me- Electronics and Communication Engineering.
P1- So what was your favorite subject??
Me- Digital Electronics
P1- So whats the difference between digital electronics and analog electronics.
Me- Told few major difference.Seemed they were convinced.
P1- OK can you tell me how the communication happens between mobile phones.
Me- I was not sure of this. Started beating around the bush but soon realized no point in that let me admit I dont know...and i did so.
P1- So in what profile do you work in TCS???
Me- Sir Oracle Database Administartor,
P2- Can you briefly describe your work.
Me- Sir we administer Oracle database for our US based client (a huge chain retail stores in US). We troubleshoot issues in database and ensure things goes smooth. we also take periodic backups for disaster recovery.
P1-So dont you think that your job is a bit monotonous??
Me- No sir , every time new errors comes up i need to do R&D; and solve them within stipulated SLA period. If its a success its quite rewarding
P1&P2; - both started smiling.
P2- Can you describe your organization structure?
Me- I asked if I can describe at my project level.P2 said yes I can and I did the same.
P2- Can you tell me what should be done for process improvement
Me- Told something
Then P1 &P2; looked at each other and said they were done and asked me whether I had any questions.

(I probably made a disaster here.)

Me- Sir please let me know about the extracurricular activities in the college !!!!!!!! I asked about the various clubs.

P1-yes their are various clubs you can check the site. There are ample scope of extracurriculars here but it should not compromise with the fundamental reason of joining here...academics and offcourse there is the GIM Choir.

After this I was done and said thanks and would really look forward to join GIM and asked whether I can send the next person before I left.


Probably it lasted for around 15 mins....donno how the total thing looks like. Would appreciate thoughts from seniors. Then neither asked why GIM nor why MBA..!!!!!!!

First 30 sec opening then 10 min discussion and then 30 sec conclusion. Made good points at the outset entered the discussion 3 times then satisfactory conclusion.

Essay Writing:- On the GD Topic 200-250 words. Time alloted was 5 min. It was a qualifying round. If one does not clear the cut in this round his GD/PI or Written Scores will not be considered. Made a spelling mistake. Could have added some quotations but the paper was snatched as i started it. Anyways i hope to clear this.

Yes, I remember you, ur point was good.

First of all thanks to Avinash for all the help... got my GDPI done on 7th @1.30 pm, got a hostel room as well, and reaching GIM was easy. From Pune to Mapusa via volvo sleeper bus, took a bus to Sanquelim and from there a Pilot(cost Rs. 30), reached campus at 8.30 am.
Now GD details -
Topic - Are management institutes completely irrelevant.
Experience - Made my impression in opening statement and closing statements (asked the panel how did i do in GD during PI ). The overall GD went good, and no fish market.

Written exercise - Write about the GD in any sense in 100-120 words.

PI experience - Two faculty members -

They asked me if i had any questions for them, so i asked about the Gd(specifically abt myself).
Since i was the last in my batch i was also offered snacks, i tried to refuse politely but they insisted so i had a piece and left

Overall experience - The GD was good, PI was the easiest one i have had this year. PS - I was in panel 2, from what i came to know in other panels they were asking about academics as well as more details, guess i was a bit lucky

Panel Sir D'Lima(P1) and Sir Abhishek Ranga(P2)
Both were very good and comforting ,before gd P1 gave us a brief talk and asked if we had questions and i asked one :biggrin:

GD became a fish market,every one wanted to get noticed :grin:
Gave a decent opening and closing statement and entered gd twice
gd lasted for 10-15 mins with no proper consensus :nono:
Asked to write a small para on the same !!!
Did not like the fact that all Goans were put in 1 gd of 12 each

Gd table was huge and was rather oval in shape with the ellipse not completed and i was at the end of a curve,strategically bad place to be But the best thing was i was close to the panel :biggrin::biggrin:

First of all thanks to Avinash for all the help... got my GDPI done on 7th @1.30 pm, got a hostel room as well, and reaching GIM was easy. From Pune to Mapusa via volvo sleeper bus, took a bus to Sanquelim and from there a Pilot(cost Rs. 30), reached campus at 8.30 am.
Now GD details -
Topic - Are management institutes completely irrelevant.
Experience - Made my impression in opening statement and closing statements (asked the panel how did i do in GD during PI ). The overall GD went good, and no fish market.

Written exercise - Write about the GD in any sense in 100-120 words.

PI experience - Two faculty members -

A) Told everything in the form and a little bit more
Q2) About job, company
A) Told
Q3) About the project in company and clients

They asked me if i had any questions for them, so i asked about the Gd(specifically abt myself).
Since i was the last in my batch i was also offered snacks, i tried to refuse politely but they insisted so i had a piece and left

Overall experience - The GD was good, PI was the easiest one i have had this year. PS - I was in panel 2, from what i came to know in other panels they were asking about academics as well as more details, guess i was a bit lucky

shocking to see that for PI panel just asked HR question about family, how u'll manage fees n all etc ......... not a single expected question

buddy atleast can you please tell me the xat cutoffs this year for people from other states
and what would be conversion ratio for gd/pi call getters....

Minimum time gap cud be 5-10 mins.Not more than that..The first person to speak in GD would be the first person to go for the PI and GD order is the same as PI order..Atleast in my case it was the same..

GIM does'nt take thru CAT..You have to appear for XAT..No OBC,SC,ST cutoffs..GIM do give calls at lower percentiles for people with goan domicile.

what is the cutoff for CAT under OBC category

GD Topic: A voter should have the right to reject or select all the candidates.

There were two panelists and the sitting was done in a rectangular form.
Experience: There were 10 people and one was absent. All of us were asked to give an opening statement for 20-30 secs in clock wise manner. Then the topic was open for discussion. All of us got a chance to speak and all spoke. In between for a min or so , it became a fish market, but more or less it was good. Then again all of us were asked to conclude for 20- 30 seconds in anti clockwise manner. I entered 2-3 times and gave some new points. After the gd got over, I realized some thing that all of us spoke on rejection part but not on selection. I hope dey dnt deduct marks for the same. GD got over by 9:30.

Immediately PI started, I was 5th person to go in

The panelists were same for the interview. One was p1( prof. Debu sen), p2( prof nirmalaya) and me

P2 was asking most of the questions

P2: introduce myself
Me: I did
P2: have u worked in ur company ( I had mentioned dat I want to work in my business)
Me: no
P2: what is supply chain( I am doing a logistics and supply chain management course)
Me : I said
P2: can u draw the diagram
Me: I said yes and started drawing on a page he had given me
( but he stopped me in between and didnt let me complete)
P2: what are the distribution channels
Me: I answered
P2: give me an example of 0-tier and 1-tier distribution channel
Me: gave
P2: is C&F; required at all the stages
Me: I dnt know
P2: wat is the diff between marketing and sales
Me: anwered
P2: hw are they related
Me: answered again
P2: y are u wasting two precious years of your life doing mba, wen u can rather join ur family business and learn from your dad
Me: answered ( had prepared beforehand but couldnt answer the way I wanted to , could have done better)
P2: so that means u wont be taking placement
Me: yes I will be taking placement and gave reasons for the same

Come on, Have pity on the poor souls. Those are also GD/PI exps ...these questions are what everyone will have in their minds. If not anything else, I think, to know that even others have the same doubts does make some of us, me included, feel good. Even when I post this I think the GIM threads are the better threads in PG, thank you to the seniors for that.

I know, I will get many groans for this post .. Still wanted to just add this.

Now for my Exp :

1 March 2012, Bangalore, 8:30 Batch

GD Topic : Should the child rearing be done by collective nurseries and schools and not parents (Something like that)

GD was okay, Got in 2/3 times in the 7 mins allotted for 11 participants

Essay : Same topic as the GD. Was asked to do it in 4 paragraphs. opening, Para 2, Para 3, Conclusion

Started okay, could not conclude well ..

Interview : Two panelists. The first 3 people had almost half hour interviews the rest of us had 10/15 mins

Mine went something like this :

No intro or why MBA any questions like that. Asked directly about the company I worked for. Next was about the break in my work exp and if there is a similar chance in the near future(Family Medical Emergency). Asked about my family and its members. Then they asked about other calls that I have and asked me to grade them.

In between they asked if I had the XAT score card on me, which was not in the folder. I did not have it. They said it is alright and that they will get it from the institute.

What I make of it: They will go back compare notes, and the essays and the scores and everything before making the list. That is good.

Overall the exp was pretty good. We were having GDs on different topics from movies to foods and bangalore itself while we waited for our turns to the interview.

A little something extra : I did not bluff. Though in my ranking of the calls GIM was second, I had reasons for it being there. I had not prepared for the questions they asked, and all the answers were just what I really knew or thought about the topics. Dont know if it worked or not. My interview was over in 10 mins. Dont know what to make of that either. Maybe It is because I did not have the XAT score card. They did not ask me anything from my hobbies or my graduation, though they grilled a few others on these. So beware of what you say as your hobbies and if you are fresher hit the basic books for your fav subjects. Discuss the recent news items with those waiting with you for the interview, they would have done some research into the topic in a different direction to what you have done, and you WILL pick something up.
