Hi,

I have been waitlisted at 9 in general category.

My dilemma is whether to give another crack at CAT. I am presently working in an It company. My work will allow about 2-3 hrs a day for studying.

Any suggestions or experience would help.

P.S: I know the decision lies with me.

Hey Puys Just a query. Do we need to give a crossed DD with the acceptance offer. Also in the acceptance form has a box for the Bank name. Does it refers to the bank from which the DD has been made or the bank where the DD will get credited in KGP account. I have got the DD made from SBT, Gurgaon but the payment to IIT Kharagpur is at SBI, Kharagpur.Please clarify....

You will easily convert in the first waitlist itself which will be announced on May 18th. Total 180 have been put in WL and you have no reason to worry. Congrats

@AdCom please publish the Placement Report soon. IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai have also come up with their placement reports. Please release it soon

Well its only for gen category....and its for around 88 seats...if am not wrong.
But still there will be huge WL movement...Just for info...for iitB the last rank to be called for gen category was WL 106 (as per PG...may be higher)...and for iitD as per their website it was WL73 for GEN who got final admit....So in my opinion students with wl number will convert with out much fuss...

As per my speculation and infn,for OBC category at IIT-R, out of 31 called candidates,08 are waitlisted in IIT-Delhi W/L-10,11,16,17,18,25,27,29, FINAL CONVERTS 04(IITD-01,KGP-02,NITIE-01). If all candidates in iitd waitlist convert(not sure for 25.27,29),iit-r w/l shall go up by 12-5 =07.
pl. submit if any of puys have additional infn on this movement.

I guess it became a little muddy since the guy didn't come up front with his own profile / experience correctly ... just lambasting an institute be it KgP or any other insti without disclosing your true identity will leave you in a puddle and people questioning your intentions although you may be telling the truth

i wonder why the discussion abt the controversy on VGSOM placement report with PagalGuy hasnt cropped up in this thread for the benefit of future aspirants?

When u have choices its important to look at negative aspects as well in making an informed decision
(one shouldnt rely on seniors on PG only as it is a known fact that no student would say negative things about his/her institute )

I've read this report and I was actually shocked since PG had based its report on a LinkedIn message by some of the candidates ... it said that their reporter had spoken to the same candidate and that 2 other candidates were facing the same plight but some more clear statistics by PG would've helped ... I wouldn't be surprised either if some of the students could not get placed ... its all but natural (not getting the desired profile, location, you get the idea)... My 2 cents on the issue is that B-schools are not placement centers ... you come there for an MBA ... getting a job is all upto you ... Just having an IIM/IIT degree will not get you a job ... it'll only bring the odds in your favor but its never a sureshot thing

Btw I feel VgSom is a very good institutes and so are other IIT's .Rankings never do justice to the quality of education and placements there

I completely agree with you that rankings are just another hooplah to lure unsuspecting candidates and so are the placement figures ...

Also since you've mentioned the placement report fiasco I'd also like to bring to the notice of everyone that VGSoM was barred from PG rankings for 2010 ...

Just think abt the situation in iitD where OBC wl was exhausted completely last yr and the remaining seat were given to gen category....and iit KGP released 4 WLs and if am not wrong students received calls with admission offers even after that...Of course all these are speculations....but not more than 12-13 from the first list will accept the calls...Many will have overlaps with iitM, iitK and iit KGP ..not to mention iitD.

And just to add a pt...for gen category...iit R has some 55-60 seats...but if ur rank in below 150...means an effective WL of 90 is a sure convert...

You are absolutely rite buddy. But last year if i am rite OBC list moved till 45 something and got exhausted and OBC seats got merged with general category seats. More seats added tis year in few institutes but cant be sure the trend will repeat anyways my dilemma continues

If i were in ur case then i would have pain iitK fees (even though i know u will forefit it as ur iitKGP is a sure shot convert )

Still 37k is not a small amount....and the other option would be to hedge urself with iitR (as that is also a sure convert @obc wl 15)...and have u seen the placement fig of iitR ? ;-)

If iitR and iitK are comparable in ur opinion (which i think is) then u can surely wait for iit kgp in stead of paying for iitK

But as i said...its a life time opportunity...whatever u decide think twice...a few thousand rupees shouldn't spoil ur ambition and dream :-)

so much talk about money, departmental status, building size, comparing b-schools etc but none about how learning is unaffected by all of it. The profs who are going to teach us are experts and one of the best in their fields. The people you are going to study with will be as brilliant as you are...so what is this fuss all about? It's a game of survival of the fittest now. You learn good, you get good money...After some years, the b-school cap on our head would start to wear down leaving behind the brain we have...how on earth can someone consider building size as a criterion to consider a b-school's worth?
All we are thinking about is the first jump we would get but life doesn't end there, does it?
Do justice to the time and the opportunity you have got and you would be happy in failure too...there ain't any whiter truth than this

guys the negative comments I got was from 1st year students..n not 1 but 3-4 students in group and also in front of many other students..I was standing with a alumnus of my cllg studying in vgsom..n they said quite loudly in front of some other vgsom students..so many bad decision makers get chance in insti like vgsom..wow!!!

Relax dude....it happens And if u r posting something -ve then there will be backlash...need not feel bad abt that...All these arguments help us make a better decision of whr to do mba from...So just chill

Now a bit of bad blood here....its better to stop this argument here. An aspirant when applies to a b-schools, he/she does it after judging if the school fits to his/her aspirations. Now if someone suddenly says something -ve abt the school, will that opinion alone change the decision to join or not join? Instead we will be just curius to check if the opinion has any real value and so it will only help us. And if just a personal opinion disturbs us so much then i doubt our decision to apply to iit kgp is just.

VGSoM is a great institute and nyone who applied for it knows it very well. So better stop this argument here and instead start some constructive argument......err !! don't ask me what is constructive argument

PG is made 4 taking wise and informed decision and we all share our experience here n so did I.

i have the following questions sorry for the long list

1. Any reason for reducing the summer internship duration from 6 to 2 months? i feel 6 is too long and 2 too short personally :)

2. We were told hostels were shared with UG students as well.. with new hostel block will there be dedicated MBA hostel? how were urs?

3. Are there enough student lead activities and clubs in the campus like any other b school? This i am asking as i am wondering if VGSOM is just like anyother full fledged b school?

4. In what stage is the Student Exchange Programme in campus if any? did u have any of ur fellow mates join the same?

5. Lastly, do both VGSOM and IIT K UG students have common placement committee?

Ans. 1- The current HoD of VGSOM, Prof. Arabinda Tripathy, who was earlier the chairman of the PGP course at IIM-Ahmedabad for a number of years, re-evaluated and re-designed the curriculum when he took over in 2009.
Prof. Tripathy joined VGSOM in 2009 as HoD after a 25 year long stint as a faculty of Operations Management and Chairman of the PGP course at IIM-Ahmedabad.

Ans 2- VGSOM students generally share hostels with other PG students (M.Tech., PhD. etc.) but not with UG students.

IIT-Kgp runs a dual-degree B.Tech.-MBA programme for students admitted through JEE and these dual-degree students will be your batchmates along with some officers of the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force).

Ans 3- Define enough. IIT-Kgp along with VGSoM has so many activities the year round that you risk an year-back if you want to participate in all of them. VGSOM alone has two fests of its own along with the BIG FOUR institute fests (Spring Fest, Kshitij, Shaurya and the Global Entrepreneurship Summit). Add to it fests of other departments as well as the various societies ranging from Finance, Game Theory, Strategic Management to the Adventure society, CRY chapter and AIESEC etc. that exist on campus.

State associations like Tamil, Andhra, Kerala, Punjabi etc. are very active on campus. Since you are from Chennai, you can also count the Annual Function and Pongal celebrations of the IIT-Kgp Tamil Samajam to your list of activities. It will give you a great platform to network with students, Professors and Staff members from your state from all IIT-Kgp departments as well as an opportunity to provide free food coupons for the great food at Pongal fest for your non-Tamil friends :)

IIT-Kgp has a total population of 23,000 people (students, faculty and staff) from all over India. It has around 9000 students alone, highest in any other IIT. The main campus of Kgp is 2100 acres, again largest in any IIT. It is a very vibrant campus.

Ans 4- Fully paid foreign government and private exchange scholarships like the Fulbright (USA), DAAD (German), Shastri scholarship(Canada) etc. along with University exchange like with U.C. Berkeley, MIT, Harvard etc. of various durations ranging from 9 months to 3 years are available along with many other opportunities that are notified from time to time.

But usually PhD and B.Tech. students get their advantage simply because they stay for at least four years and their coursework is more relaxed while MBA curriculum is only two years and quite jampacked. Maybe you can try for a summer internship through these scholarships as you would have only summers after your first year as a sufficeintly long break(approx > 2.5 months).

Ans 5- No, VGSOM has its own placement cell. The rest of the IIT has a Central Placement Cell comprising of students from B.Tech., M.Tech., and LLB and PhD courses. The Central Team takes care of all recruitments except MBA recruitments and MBA students have no representation in Central Placement Cell.

But when major companies like the big i-banks and consulting firms visit campus, they often do their MBA recruitments through the Central Placement Cell.

So in that sense, the Central Placement Team does have a role in VGSoM placements.

Also Mr. Jaichiku I found an inconsistency in ur PG profile details and ur supposedly "actual" profile that u have posted in VGSOM thread:

U say u work in JUSCO... are u still working or have u left JUSCO?

I have also converted IIT-Madras, Kanpur but will be joining IIT KGP.

So KGP i am coming.

Lot of stuff depends on perception
I remember, in a PG meet of bangalore edition, we had a senior from FMS, Delhi and who is also a part of placement committee
We had a discussion on this stuff as well, that is, in IIT system, we have both department and also a separate school, how does it differ?
His answer was it is easy to sell a separate school to the recruiters than a department.
So what I feel it is better to keep that parameter out of contention while selecting a b school.
What I feel is to go and select b schools, the way we select b schools under CAT. There we go by the reputation of a college, their placement stats, subjects taught, reputed departments (like which is good in that school, marketing or finance), number of students etc etc
By all above such factors, what I feel is VGSoM is one of the best place to be, specially if someone is aspiring to be in consulting.
Rest I dont think it is really needed to introduce a B School of VGSoM's stature.

IMO it wont make much of a difference whether it is a DOM or a separate B-school so dont make your decision on its basis,rather talk with seniors in both the B-schools (e.g IIT-kgp and IIT-M) IIT-D is doin quite well inspite of it being a DOM and so is SJSOM .Both a seperate B-school or a DOM can be exemplary or can be prone to mis management .

well said mate.I too have seen this from last couple of years.
Guys who use to be on the waitlist always try to sensationalize the matter for their own benefit.Bashing any college for their own purpose becomes rampant after the final results are declared.
Anyway I guess guys here are matured enough to take their own decisions.
and above all VGSOM is a brand which doesn't need clarification.

Guys I went 2 vgsom n DMS,delhi 4 interview n saw there is nothing special in vgsom like a b-school within an e-school n DMS being a department in IITD.Actualy it was other way round..vgsom was jus like a department with a building along other engg departments of kgp..but DMS stands tall in a different part of IIT as a separate entity and was damn impressive!!
A very sad xperience where actually some students looked really unhappy being part of vgsom and they actually suggested me go anywhr except vgsom and that incident was really disheartning and really shocked me as erstwhile I had a lot of respect 4 vgsom!!Dont want 2 be like 1 of them!!!sorry to post this on public forum but jus shared a sad incidence as MBA is a very important part of a student n want every1 2 know this..no offence meant 4 any1 or vgsom..even I hold a high respect 4 vgsom but dat incident really shaken my confidence 2 join vgsom if I get a chance coz MBA is all about lyftym exprience..

U say u work in JUSCO... are u still working or have u left JUSCO?

My friend.. what do u mean by "looked really unhappy"? What was the reason behind ? DO u know? can u explain a bit more?
Were these guys the ones who didnt get a job? (Before the GD PI, prof Biplab Datta was quite candid in telling that - "Barring one or two, yes we have 100% placement" :))

One more thing - dms has a bigger building than VGSOM.. but it is still a dept under IIT delhi. VGSOM is a management school under IIT Kgp (even though the building is smaller (I thought u stressed too much on the "impressive" building size... ).

I would also like to get one clarification from ur side...

VGSOM is a full fledged school under IIT Kgp whereas other 2 are Deptts.

I do hv a call from IIT M also but am going to join IIT Kgp ...

Got these details regarding financial aid.... from one of the seniors...

1. Your total family income should be less than 6 lac/annum
2. It can be get after the first semester results...as they consider ur performance during that....
3. There are different compensation options ....50% , 100% or some %
4. If you are selected for 100% compensation, they will return ur 1.5l u will be depositing now...

you may think that I'm fretting, boasting, bothering over spilt milk, I might have been into a different kinda competition for IIT-Kgp what ever...

IIT-Kgp is the only college that I've not converted this season (I'm wait listed without a no. though).

Having converted IIM-B, Raipur, Rohtak, Trichy, NITIE, NMIMS, XIMB, MDI-HR, I couldn't believe that I didn't even get a WL no. for VGSOM...

The fun starts now...

My PI hardly lasted 5mins... oops don't mind, It wasn't a PI at all. Below were the QNs asked:

1> What's ur CAT percentile
2> What do ur parents do
3> What other calls u have. What IIM calls you have.
4> Couple of technical questions.
5> List of hobbies (pls note, just 'name them')

They didn't even want to listen to the details of anything... no cross-questions, just 'name them' kind of questions... what was more annoying is that they made note of it when they said I'd IIM-B & I calls.

This really sent a '-ve' message to me -> a serious aspirant about VGSOM

I've never written such a post on PG, all of them have been very pleasing/humble... couldn't control myself from writing all these though...

I don't understand such a great insti - IIT-Kgp (even the placements etc. of VGSOM seem decent) interviewing candidates in that fashion... and for no reason rejecting/WL ppl with no nos.

P.S: sorry if my tone is harsh... but, I am surprised as well !!

P.P.S: I would be joining IIM-Bangalore. Just wanted to communicate this message to the senior community. I believe my criticism will be taken constructively:thumbsup:
P.P.P.S: A convert from IIT-Kgp wouldn't have made me change my decision, but would have loved to convert this coveted call as well

Have you received the visa or you are yet to appear for the interview?? If its the latter my suggestion would be to go in for an MBA (if you have clarity in your reasons to do an MBA). You are not guaranteed a Visa ... you need to clear the i'view first and I have umpteen examples of Visa rejects (even with people who have admits into the top 20 colleges in US)



I'm not too sure but having a college would mean more independence for making decisions ... Probably the seniors can throw more light on it



I'm not really sure if I get your point here ... 6L is quite low as compared to other institutes ... Even SPJ is charging 9L for its MBA program ... Don't even get me started on the likes of IMI and IMT ... 6L is almost half of what these instis are charging and this is only the tuition fees ... hostel and the other charges are over and above this ... and come to think of it if you're looking for the best ROI then I guess the best insti is FMS (only 10k per sem) ... Don't get me wrong but don't let money be a deterrent for you to get into a good b-school ... you can always take an education loan ...



Again the fees is high as compared to some of the other IITs but look at what you get in return for it ... Don't just let money be your only hurdle ... You can always plan your finances and repay the loan in no time after completing your MBA ...

Yes please answer this question so that we can do a proper comparison between last year's and this year's waitlist movement. No one but you seniors can give a correct estimate of how many people were present in different waitlists that came out last year.
