It's not that. They have limited hostel accommodation. And I think it's better to invite someone for hostel after the first year rather than asking someone to vacate after first year.

Yes you will have to go and get your certificates verified after the results are out. But it is not required that you come in person, you can send anyone from your family or friends with the certificates. But it is always advisable to come and visit the campus, finalise on accommodation etc. as you will not be provided Hostels in 1st year.

-Work ex certificate for DAF: Currently i am in my 2nd job and though i have the work ex certificate for the 1st first job, but not for the current one. Is it necessary to attach the work ex for the current job too?

- My score in exam is 45.15 and the cut off is 45, so considering that written exam counts for 70 marks from 170 , how many people have been called per seat.


Pls help, as TISS is the only call that i have got, and i am keenly interested to convert it

Dear Aspirants

I believe the only way to crack any interview is too be crystal clear on why do you need what you are striving for. Personally speaking I was very clear on "Why HR" though I was never grilled on the same during my interview. Rather my interview experience was very application based, you can read the same on last year's GD-PI thread. The panel is more interested in knowing what motivates you to join the HR field and whether you can justify the same. And then comes whether you are a fit for the same or not. The latter is not in our control so it would be better to focus on the former.

Please refrain from using rationales like your good people skills etc. as a justification for your interest in HR. Just pick up a situation from your organizations where you think an HR intervention could have been a value add or for that matter any situation where you think HR excelled and motivated you to be in their role.

For freshers who do not have any such experiences to share, you can generalize it by saying that all resources being equally available to everyone it is only the development of human resources or the people of an organization that can give an advantage to any organization. There are plethora of examples of such organizations who are successful only because of their brilliant HR practices.

But the above clue is just to start your braincells working, don't use it as a template to frame the answer for the most crucial question of your interviews.

In addition here are a few other questions which are very important from an interview point of view:

Q. What has been your most significant professional achievement? What has been your toughest professional challenge and how did you address it?

Q. What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

Q. What would you do in case you are not selected?

Q. Explain your role in the organization.

Q. What made you switch from a particular field to HR? For eg. Physics in my case.

Q. Who is a true leader according to you?

Q. Explain a situation where you have faced an ethical dilemma.

Q. Why dont you work for another 2-3 years and then join TISS?

Apart from all this just be thorough with the information that you provide in the DAF. You can be grilled on anything ranging from your city, parents to any other info in the form.

TISS does reveal your score for GD and PI once the final results are out.
Now I didnt attend any of the achievers workshop etc before coming here. So for all the people who dont find such a thing, relax.
Last year, most of the GD's were case based. You just have have to be prompt enough to bring valuable points into the discussion. The interview is the make or break thing. In a 70 mark written test, the marks are very close so they dont matter a lot. In interviews, depending on how the panel percieves you, they can give anywhere between 10 to 65 on 70. So from now on, its just about cracking the interview.
Few pointers from my side. As mentioned, fill your DAF very very carefully and be original. Dissonance of any sort from what is written and what you speak can be lethal. One common question that may concern all is social issues or problems from the area you come from. Freshers, be prepared with one or two subjects of yours as your knowledge will be put to test. Also, freshers are expected to have some basic understanding of HR. May not be text book definitions but a practical understanding of what HR exactly is like in organizations. There are people here who can help you all with the same.

TISS does mention about the individual scores(Written-GD-PI). Just see the last year Results thread. You will get a lot of info there.

1. Your employer will grant you study leave/duty leave for these periods.
   
2. You will use your personal leave/vacation slots to attend classes in these period.
   
3. You will have to lose pay for these periods.
   
4. It will pose difficulty and you have not yet worked out how to manage this.
   

I didnt understand the context of this question, This is full time course and people with work ex will quit and join the course. Am I right? Please explain the context to me guys.

It was some GD/PI specialist in Matunga, who allowed a free GD session. This feedback was from him.

I do not think you will piss off the moderators at all. This is exactly the sort of myth that people outside TISS have about this place. Of course, if you show complete apathy towards the problems faced by the country, that won't help your chances much. But in TISS, you are allowed to have a personal opinion about Gandhi(ji) too. No problems with that at all.
Any place you go to, being true to yourself is the only thing that'll help you. That is what I've learnt. :)

Yes, it was very good. Totally worth the money. They give you good exposure, simulated GD/PIs, and a lot of insight in to basic management topics across streams.

It won't b a big issue if you can prepare a satisfactory answer for WHY HR? You will have to be prepared with instances from ur work ex where you demonstrated certain qualities. Also ur learnings from work ex, and how it will benefit when you take the course.

Got a quick query.

Does Work Ex count? And what if it is not relevant work ex... As in say in Finance or Consulting kind of roles?

Choose "You will have to lose pay for these periods" in case you are quitting your job. But if your employer is granting you a study leave then go for the first option.

I don't see a point why anyone would select option 2 or 4. As far as the context is concerned, it is just to check how are you planning to go about managing your job and studies in case you are not quitting.

I worked as an HR in an IT company before joining TISS. I assure you that anything your HR says will not standalone jeopardize your chances for TISS. So relax!!!
My boss was not contacted before I joined TISS. The same is true for a lot of batchmates whose HRs were not contacted before they joined TISS. So dont worry too much.

Also since you would be part of the HR community in 2 yrs time, spare some thought for the poor souls!! I am sure that they are not pathetic... :D

Hey...

Reading the Eco times or Biz Standard would help in the interview... Also make your SOP strong... Why do you want to pursue a career in HR? How would your Engineering degree help? Where do you see yourself 5 yrs down the line? Research well before you fill in your DAF. Talk to people in HR, understand what your strengths are and project them through the DAF.

Since past 2 years HRM&LR; ha focussed more on case studies related to various spheres of HR..Topics range from issues related to Labour laws, choosing between 2 people to promote, social implications of HR practices such as child labour in a factory setup etc..
This ofcourse does not RULE OUT THE FACT that they can ask normal GD topics too
So practice both of them..

Congrats to all HRM&LR; call getters.. Do realise that the real test starts from here on ...I would suggest you utlize the next 1.5 months in preparing for the GD PI phase...

You can start off with the following..
*1Thorough reflection & analysis of your life profile right from your background, childhood, education to current work profile. This will be helpful to fill the DAF. Strengths , weaknesses etc
2. Start reading any general newspaper & focussing on the issues related to society, economics, politics etc. You coul also look at a business newspaper such as Economic Times (business news is not necessary, focus more on general social awareness)
3. Social schemes such as NREGA, any policy changes, inflation deflation etc
4. Thorough knowledge about the course of TISS ( whichever you have applied to) and a clarity about why u want to join it ( an important factor that they look at )
5. Start developing opinion on social problems from an Indian context.
6. Couple of subjects/favourite subject from your graduation (especially relevant for freshers, they asked this last time). Focus on concepts.
7. Profile of organisation you have worked in, especially from HR perspective (HR structure, policies etc)

Being from an engg background,i find it quite neccesary to get aqquainted with the basics of managment and terms..senoirs pls throw some lights upon any material that can be useful at this moment..!!

The seniors from TISS will be there to tell you whatever they know about the GDPI process (rest assured, we don't know much :D).

Some initial pointers:

1. Go through as many previous years' threads as you can (most links posted in the post before this).
2. Read every word about your course from your brochure.
3. Be prepared for some serious grilling about your work-ex, if you have any. Freshers, be prepared with the basics of your field of undergraduate study.
4. Fill the DAF form after putting in some serious thought. Its very important.
5. TISS interviews are known to consist of questions about your state. So you should read well on this.
6. Its time to get aware about the burning questions of the day, starting with national and going on to international issues. More importantly, its crucial that you have an opinion on them.

I guess all this should form a good starting point. PM me for any queries or post them on this thread. Will try my best to reply and also get other current TISS students to reply.

This is what a highly respected classmate has got to say about GDPIs @ TISS - "GDs can go either way depending on the group. In case you have a noisy group, try your best not to add to the noise and try and knock some sense into your groupmates (Something to the tune of " If we dont collaborate and allow participation, the entire group would get disqualified").

For the PI, you need to be well prepared. Read up about your areas of interest, current affairs, prepare your answer to "Why HR" well and you should stand a good chance of making it.

However, please remember that selection into any BSchool is relative. you may be brilliant, but if 60 more are more brilliant than you are, then you will miss out. That doesnt mean that there is anything wrong with you. So chin up!!!"

I think its even lesser for general. there are 30-31 seats for gen category and more than 250 calls. Not very sure but i think that should be the number...the total numbers are correct as u mentioned

2. It doesnt really matter much for HRM. It is more for people like disaster management, social work etc where previous work counts

1. Do we need to fill the GD/PI dates ourselves, if yes, will there be a confirmation from TISS later?

2. All the other feilds are OK, but can someone please guide for this "Mention any work done by you relevant to the field of study selected by you." I am being an engineer have not done anything great related to HR field.

ADMISSION PROCESS FOR THE BATCH OF 2010-12
The candidates have to go through different stages mainly the written test, GD, personal
interview. The total marks on which the total assessment is done is 200. The breakup is as
shown below.
1. Objective Test (70 Marks)
2. Group Discussion (30 Marks)
