P1 (Looking at my profile): Venkatesh, so you are doing your engineering and studied in DAV so tell me what is this DAV?
Me: Explained, Arya Samaj, Swami Dayanand , western education with Indian values, school also had prayers, havans etc.
P1: Do you know of any other samaj like Arya Samaj?
Me: Said Asthika Samaj.( Pretty prominent here in Chennai )
P1: Haven't you heard of Brahmo Samaj?
Me: (Somehow I couldn't remember, though I know it now) No sir I don't.
P1: Ok. Now tell me a subject that interested you in school?
Me: Sir, history was a favourite sir. I liked the teacher. She was a person who brought about this interest for the subject and I used to have a lot of discussions and debates with her. Though she is no more now I really liked her classes
P1 : Oh good. She could kindle interest. Ok. Ill give you few names take them down. Classify these names into Ancient, medieval and modern history. List : Babar, Rajaram Mohan Roy, Lord Clive, Tiruvalluvar, Samudragupta,Tulsidas and Subramania Bharathi
Me : Got all except one right, which I later corrected myself substantiating the reason.
P1: There is a senior Indian bureaucrat who has a similarity with you (pointing at my forehead, I was wearing a tilak on it).
Me : Yes sir, CEC Gopalaswami.
P1: Yes, do you know what post he was holding prior to this?
Me :Yes sir, he was the home secretary in the BJP regime under Sri L K Advani.
P1: There was something prior to that. Do you remember?
Me : No sir, this is the only thing I know.
P1 : Have you heard of IRDA?
Me : (started off saying)Industrial Rural. the arm of World Bank? No sir I dont.
P1 : Ok. Tell me something else that interests you
Me : Sir, the course in PMIR interests me sir
Gentle laugh from panelists
P1 : See, these gentlemen here are experts in the field. By saying so you are putting yourself in trouble.
Me : No sir, I dont mean to be arrogant. I am here for an interview for the same course so I wanted to just stress on that. It is not that I am throwing a challenge here or something.
P1: No no, you arent throwing a challenge, just saying that you are putting yourself into trouble thats all.
Me: (Smile)
P1:So tell me something else that interests you.
Me: Sir you can ask me about Rotaract sir, I am the vice president of my club.
P1: Accha. Interact, Rotaract and all uh. What is the motto of interact?
Me: Sir, interact is a part of school level, Rotaract is in college and I joined in my first year.etc etc. Gave a long answer here, service above self id the motto told him a little about everything. 3 minutes
P1: Ok, being a Rotaractor, what do you think about right to education bill. What impact will it have?
Me: Sir, empowerment, tool, awareness, rural education, cobbler son can be engineer/doctor etc. Family, community etc develops
P1: You are missin my question here. Do you think it will be feasible?
Me: Sir, India is vast. Implementation ll be a problem. Blah blah.
P1: How about poverty. Do you think children who work as child labourers in Sivakasi, Varanasi and Tirupur actually go to work on their own or is it compulsion? What do you think can be done.
Me: Gave an answer(Night Education). Seemed satisfied. Passes to P2
P2: Nice discussion you had(this one or gd????!!) Was going through your answers in the questionnaire. You seem to have a word here. Human capital management. Can you explain.
Me: Explained.
P2: But what you say doesnt feature in a consultant profile, if that is where you want to go. Do you know of any consultant companies in the world?
Me: Ma Foi in India, Hewitt and Watson Wyatt abroad
P2 : Is that where you want to be?
Me: Sir, if Ma Foi could have been started by a man who wanted to be an entrepreneur in this field and joined your institute, I as a person with a similar profile am sure ll be successful too.
P2: What do you think do they do?
Me: Consult for companies, provide solution. Spot talent and enhance skill.
Recruitment and profile evaluation.
P2: Is this human capital or intellectual capital?
Me: I am talking about intellectual capital sir.
P2: Do you know how it is measured?
Me: IQ sir, HDI is also there.
P2: Think HDI is used for intellectual capital?
Me: No sir, its used for a broad study on human development.
P2: But what you are saying doesnt convince me.. It doesnt match a consultants profile.
Me : That is in the later period of my career, what I want to do as a consultant is more of what I want to do in the recent future.
P2: Somehow I am not convinced.
Me: Took an example from rotaract. Told them of an incident and a solutioin to it.
P2: Such things dont work in corporate.
Me: Sir, no matter wherever they are, human beings remain the same. So I am sure it will work.
P2: People remain the same? Dont they grow, dont they change.
Me: Yes sir, they grow and learn, but their human core values is something that remains the same wherever they are. Sir, I am talking with a certain amount of experience I have. What will apply to the corporate world is something that I ll learn during the course.
P2: Hope you have seen the course details. What you say doesnt feature in the list of courses.
Me: Sir, I believe that in the future these will be the more important areas as team dynamics ll play a major role in determining the companys growth. So I still believe that motivation etc are very important in the current scenario.
Passes the baton to P3
P3 : (Coming from a relaxed position to a more intimidating position)Venkatesh, after seeing your discussion and profile, I feel that you do not fit the bill of being a HR manager.
Me: (What the hell?

) Sir what makes you think so sir? I dont see a reason why.
P3: No, its just an overall evaluation with your values, ideas etc, you dont seem to fit.
Me: Sir I bed to differ sir, but I dont see a reason I dont. Is there anything specific?
P3: Nothing specific. Just an overall evaluation.
Me: No sir. I think I am suited for the course and ll be able to do a good job wherever I go.
P3: Wherever you go I am sure. You ll do well in the course, come out in the top 5 ranks also. But somehow I dont think you fit.
Me: Why sir, do you think I exceed the courses expectations?
P3: (laughs)What do you mean by exceeding?
Me: What I meant was am I too good or not at all good for the course.
P3: Not the question of good or not good, its the question of being appropriate or inappropriate.
Me: So sir, what type of course do you think will be appropriate?
P3: Well maybe (thinks)
(Haha.. Didnt see this coming did you?

)
P1 says something about NGOs etc.
P3 : Yeah maybe more philanthropic or something in that sense.
Me: Sir is it my rotaract experience that gives you such an impression.
P3 : No no. Its just an overall impression. More to do with your values
Me: Sir, according to me values are important to any company. Blah blah (I say something for about 2 minutes totally and then) Sir am I making any sense at all here??
P3: You are making a lot of sense Venkatesh. Thank you. You may leave.(And scribbles something on a paper)
Me: (Great

)Thank you sirs
As I get up
P3: Do you have BM call also?
Me: No sir, I have only HR calls from here and TISS
P3: Oh when is the interview?
Me: Told
P3: I am sure you ll get through. Thank you
Me: (Getting up and about to leave) Sir do you mean here or TISS?? ;)
They look up with surprise and then
Me: Oh just nothing sir. Thanks a lot.
Throughout my interview, none of them made any eye contact despite my repeated attempts. They were eating chocolates, biscuits, drinking coffee, water during my interview. Someone was looking at his mobile, at the floor and at the mirror on the wall behind me.
It was a fantastic experience!!! I for a few days couldn't take anything from it.. Positives, negatives nothing.. Until the results were announced ofcourse..
Verdict : Converted!! ;):D
