Maan..I'm really getting confused..but Jose's room is so messy that his mother calls Jose a pig.-- doesn't seem correct. It should remain as 'his mother calls him a pig". I don't have any explanations, just from reading experience..
Of course I may be wrong..but what's the correct answer..??
Can't say. Even i've read far too many sentences which wouldnt need such explicit mention of the subject.
eg, "Tom's new novel made him very famous". This seems quite apt when reading. It seems 'him' over here is a pronoun for Tom. But one could also say that 'him' could be referring to 'Tom's novel', which would then require re-framing the sentence as: Tom's new novel made Tom very famous.
(I m as confused as to which one is right)
Consider a different sentence: "Tom's brother was quarrelsome which made him infamous." Here its not clear if 'him' is referring to Tom/Tom's brother.
Thus, i suppose explicit mention would be required.
So in essence, Subject and object pronouns may NOT refer back to possessive noun.
PS: I have used examples on my own to give an explanation. For the funny language that English is ... i can't say the sentences i've used are perfectly conforming to english standards myself. So better lookup more authentic sources if u want to confirm on the above discussed rules. :cheerio:
seems convincing ..!!

Please argue/refute/contest/suggest as much as possible. Let's not agree so readily to half proven theories and end up learning wrong stuff. As they say.. half knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge.

So if u dont kno the right answer, no harm in proving the other wrong, if u find it wrong.
