may be this is question from XAT but i have taken this question from one of the CR sets of GMAT in which this OA was mentioned as 3.subtle differences between seemingly correct and more appropriate anwser sometimes gives a better edge towards awnser which is more appropriate.

that is apparent and clear that reality shows are making more money than other shows from the paragraph but actual premise which leads to more revenues due to reality shows than the other shows is these shows are very much connected to the normal lives of people so that makes them watch these shows and that in turn gives more revenues.

statement B introduces the example of the accident and statement A goes onto explain the suitability of this example to our present context...

it's like A is a subset of B or nested within B so that the continuity from B to C is not interrupted..

but by going staright to C from B we leave the idea of the accident hanging mid-air...we've introduced it but have.'t said anything about it's purpose and how it's related to the Generic statement made in D....

but then again..this is like concocting a logic-any logic-to suit the conclusion....

This ordering of the sentences begins with a generic statement about a problem(i.e. interaction between 2 individuals) which is statement D
It then goes to describe a specific example of such a situation(The accident)

Statement C seems like an extension of statement B in that it appears to translate into specification the generality mentioned in statement D.

For eg: the generic statement D mentions two conditions:
1.Interaction of 2 individuals
2.Each must decide what to do without knowing what the other does.

Statement B corresponds to the first condition and statement C to the second one,so that B and C together form a single idea.

I think the answer is 4.DBAC ... All four statements speak of the strategic problem arises when two individuals interact with each other ... Statement D sort of introduces the topic... So D has got to be the opening line.. B cannot follow A .... A describes the example that B mentions ... So A follows B .... C logically follows A

I know that i'm not in a race to ELdorado but the problem is that if i read a book/an editorial i take my sweet time to finish it. So, in the end i end up reading only the editorial in an hour time (at the same time highlighting the new words, making a note of it, getting its meaning). This is the only reason i wanted to buckle up my reading speed, since i read a lot a lot. As i also read in one of the coaching institutes manual for VA that 1 need a good reading speed preferably 800+ wpm (which even i find very insane). :banghead:

That's an insanely high requirement, even though we be Puys , i don't think thats ever going to be necessary !!

Anything vicinity of 400 wpm is more than adequate. Trust me . Also, how much thinking r you doing as you read? A little bit really helps go a long way in maximising RC effectiveness.

Hat -tip:

1) A line into the passage - are you clear who's the intended audience for the passage , and what camp the author is from??

2) By line 3-4 - are you clear what the general storyline or topic of the entire passage is going to be?

3) End of para 1 are you anticipating what para 2 is going to be about?

4) If your hunch on 3 above proves right as you start para 2, you'll breeze thru the rest of the passage in no time without much pause or bother

5) If not, can you quickle reassess the flow of thoughts in the passage to arrive at a succesful stage guess at what para 3's going to be about, at end of para 2?

6) Iterative loop that resolves whenever your hunch on next para proves right

7) usually , with lots of reading you're home by para 2 end latest (my guesstimate 90% of times) and once home, the approach helps reduce errors in recollecting major points, flow of info, and aids quickly trace relevant keywords when faced with Qs

For a few tougher passsage just buck up and spend that extra coupla minutes( coz you might only get home at end of para 4/5/never. Spend that extra coupla of minutes only if you can spare it. (My approach: I never bothered waste my time ,if i didnt have it cold by end of para 2 , I would jut simply skip that entire RC set then and there)

Ok so the take from above 3 post by both fellow puys is read intensively, set a time & finish in the stipulated time, try to maintain a healthy speed 300-400 wpm.

Practically, is it not as impossible as deceiving death?
The only block of advice I'll present to someone seeking efficiency in reading is to read as extensively as a human mind can. No other technique works and lasts. And, woefully, that's the bottom-line!

U dont need that much...to solve a RC its not imp to read quick its imp to undestand the gist & mood of the RC quickly & for that even a speed of 250-300 wpm is enuf acc to me trust me i have been able to solve RCS with reasonable accuracy.

Still if u need tips
1. Get into reading & understading habit
2. Set targets to complete the piece of reading in a particular amt of time & then review at after u have read it
3. Skimming & skipping unnecessary details is also one technique although i dont favour it much.

& for more google Munira lokhandala's speed reading tips i think theres an article on that on PG as well or there's a thread for improving reading speed on PG as well u can see there if u find any helpful tips there.

I want to know how to achieve a speed of 800+ wpm in RC???? What are the techincs to be followed to get an intial speed of 800 wpm & then moving onto increase it???
Should i use a clock & count the number of words in the RC (not in CAT but while reading editorials)??? Help me as i'm confused on this??

U dont need that much...to solve a RC its not imp to read quick its imp to undestand the gist & mood of the RC quickly & for that even a speed of 250-300 wpm is enuf acc to me trust me i have been able to solve RCS with reasonable accuracy.

Still if u need tips
1. Get into reading & understading habit

I want to know how to achieve a speed of 800+ wpm in RC???? What are the techincs to be followed to get an intial speed of 800 wpm & then moving onto increase it???

Should i use a clock & count the number of words in the RC (not in CAT but while reading editorials)??? Help me as i'm confused on this??

Para Completion can never have rules..it is a lot about the tone of the author and your level of knowledge in English.. But here are some basic tips from the net..

The biggest challenge,that the takers face here is the ambiguity of the options.

The point to be kept under consideration is that,the question will generally require you to "Choose the best possible answer" which insinuates that there exists a possibility of more than one correct answer
ow what to do?!Remember there are certain yardsticks that one can use as a checklist to strike-off the options that do not seem to fit in perfectly.

For example,one or two options can be clearly negated on account of being"Out of Scope",i.e. not being in direct relation to the context.

Same rule applies to an option that seems to regurgitate the same idea mentioned in the passage(That would rather qualify as the summary) Remember your correct option will NEVER be a restatement from the paragraph given


Narrow down your choice to the option that not only seems to take forward the main idea of the passage but also has the connotation of a closure(Alomost the same logic that we apply to locate the last statement in parajumbles.


Golden Rules Para Completion

1. Underline Keywords.
2. Keep in mind the Sense of continuity.
3. Last line should be in sychronization with the gist of the passage.
4. Last line could follow the tone of the passage.


5. Last line could be the probable conclusion of the passage.
6. Avoid option which has no co-relation with the passage.

... 20 minutes to VA if not too many PJs and precis are there! and 20 to RC... with ac accuracy of about 80, you ought to attempt at least 35-40 questions... this will enable you to clear cutoffs and get a cushion..
Again, try to do as many passages as you can. By now, you ought to have mastered doing the questions and reading simultaenously.. as in
read the questions, go to passage, rinse & repeat!
Keep flexible time limits... try not to overshoot by much and DEFINITELY do shorter RCs which have more questions, but remember some long RCs are easy to score in because they're not too abstract!

Vocab size does not matter in CAT. Application does. If you can understand the meaning of a word from the context, you're set for life :)

Critical reasoning depends wholly on your LA... brush up on your logic. But beware, you either have it or you don't! :D

i am from hindi medium school thats why my english is not good . when i read novel there at least one to two word in each sentence and thats why i am not able to understand .how i take up all these word so pls reply i am in tension due to english

since u have alot of time..
i wud suggest you start reading first..
read alot..
read simple stories
read simple comics like tinkle etc..
& no need to be tensed.. read magazines..
then read newspapers.. also keep reading articles on the net.. even here at pagalguy.. read articles over "how to improve your english".. search over anything u like on the net
& realise that only reading will help you..
u have finite time and getting tensed and whining wont help u..
trust me, just have confidence in yourself.. cracking these exams is just about spotting errors and comprehending..

When two qualities in the same person or thing are compared, the comparative degree is formed by using MORE, instead of r or er with the positive.
Example: She is more hardworking than intelligent.
