I am practicing some mnemonics(a sort of) to improve the vocab... they don't comply with grammar so :cheerio:
for eg:

Clamor : we all are in a killa(Castle) ..then suddenly somebody shoots a girl n she dies...the chaos spreads & everybody starts running n shouting
Kille(Castle) me koi mar gya (dead)... kille me koi mar gya...
cla (kille) + mor (mar) = clamor
Meaning : To shout loudly; especially in a confused way.

Chagrin : u r preparing tea for the guests n the chai(Tea) fell on your white dress, which left you disappointed in front of guests
chai + giri on white dress = chai +giri = chagrin
Meaning : a feeling of being disappointed or annoyed because of your own mistake; mortification


pontificate : Ricky ponting always pontificates (he is rude n arrogant in field , sorry ponting fans )
Meaning : if someone pontificates about something, they express their opinions in arrogance.(disapproving)

Parvenu (came in cat 2008 ) : (a sort of small story) there were two friends Parveen n veenu...they belong to low social class n lives in a hut.. vo mahino tak na to nahate (take bath) the na hi kapde dhote the (wash their clothes)...one day they find a box full of gold ...they became rich but their still their cleaning habits remains same so parveen + veenu = Parvenu
Meaning : a person from low social or economic position who has suddenly become rich & powerful (disapproving).


Pandemonium : lets assume if a pandit (priest) is having a harmonium(musical instrument) then what he will do
Pandit + Harmonium = he will create noise n sing besura raag...means he will create lots of noise & confusion
Meaning : A situation in which there is lot of noise & confusion; Brouhaha; rumpus; ruckus.

I am practicing these & maintaining a list...if this is helpful for you also then i can share these mnemonics.

Vocab Made Easy

In order to understand words and not just memorize them ...here is a cool approach..
Read small stories which have employed good vocab words..
You may try your SSC and HSC English Literature CBSE Textbooks..They have those small stories which wont be a pain in reading and have couple of good words...The deal about the whole thing is tht u get to connect the words with the character and the story.. tht helps in understanding the words and easily recalling them..
For instance..If you remember the Poem of The Frog and Nightingale..when you read it you come across couple of words for the Frog and for the Nightingale..like the Frog was haughty, presumptuous n so on..On the other hand the Nightingale was meek and submissive..
This helps remebering words and understanding them..

With just two months left for CAT, just go and buy Word Power Made Easy BY Norman Lewis... Not only would u learn suffix,prefix but u will end up increasing ur vacabulary by around 2000 words depending on ur learning ability...

I would recommend you to read the book "Word Power Made Easy" by Norman Lewis. Its a good vocab tutorial, I have enriched mine through it. Moreover, one should try to implement the words learned from the book, which can be done through reading novels and editorial page of a newspaper. I hope this will work best for you all out there. This method is good but it's not completely fool-proof.. Some words like apocryphal which means "of dubious authenticity" can't be remembered..Coz u don't get appropriate images for the word.. But still this method is good for most of the words. Thanx Mate..

Well i think is reading is one part of the picture until we try and include these words in our usage vocabulary it becomes very difficult to remember these words.
As reading adds to the learning the usage of words as well....

hey can we learn vocab effectively by using mnemonics.
Plz explain it in easy way as sometimes it becomes too much confusing ..

AFAIK mnemonics is jus about giving a certain logic 2 d things u wanna learn/cram
either u take help of a pre-positioned logic(as taught in coaching or some books), or u apply ur brain 4 establishing a logic 4 urself(better 1)
