Hi everyone....I'm a Teach For India fellow into my 2nd year of fellowship. I'm currently teaching 38 grade 4 students in a Pune Municipal Corporation School. Teach For India is a nation wide movement to end educational inequity in India. It started it operations in April 2009. It is based on the model of Teach For America, which has been running successfully in US since last 20 years. It is also a part of a big network of more than 20 Teach Fors(Teach For Pakistan, Australia, China, Teach First-Britain etc.).
Teach For IndiaI've tried to answer some of the queries about TFI that I found on the thread.
1. TFI is full time 2 year fellowship programme where selected fellows will be placed as full time teachers in government schools or low income private schools.
2. Currently Teach For India has operations in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi. From next year i.e. from April 2012 it will start its operations in Chennai and Hyderabad too. Every year it plans to add 2 new cities.
3. Final year college graduates and working professionals under the age of 35 are eligible to apply for the fellowship. Applications for the 2012 fellowship are open. Log on to
Teach For India4. The first batch of TFI(April 2009) had 87 fellows. The first batch graduated in April 2011.
The second batch (April 2010 - April 2012) has 150 fellows(I am one of them).
The thrid batch has around 300 fellows.
Keeping in mind that TFI plans to expand to 2 new cities the intake of fellows would increase and could be roughly around 450. The final call on the number of fellows would be taken taking into consideration the requirement as well as the quality of applicants.
5. About the selection ratio: In 2010 around 4000 applied and 150 got selected and in 2011 around 6000 applied and 300 got selected.
6. PART TIME ROLES: If you cannot commit 2 years to the fellowship there are other ways through which you can contribute to the educational inequity in our country.
If you are a final year graduate you can apply for the Campus Ambassador(CA). If you are a working professional you can apply for the role of Youth Professional Ambassador(YPA). The basic job of a CA and a YPA is to create awareness about Teach For India in one's college or organization. For more details:
