This is a thread dedicated entirely to the problems faced by CAT Aspirants solving Nishit Sinha's Quant and LA/DI Book.
This thread will help CAt aspirants to understand the Basic concepts thoroughly for those who are using the book and will also help others who are preparing for various MBA entrance exams and following some other book.
It will be highly appreciated if the Moderators kindly allow us to start this new thread for Discussion of Nishit Sinha's Quant,DI and LA Problems which helpful for CAT preparation.
Nishit Sinha followers will be free to post any problems from the book which they feel are difficult to understand or which requires a detailed explanation , and we expect some of us who have solved it will definitely help others.
IT WILL BE OF GREAT HELP IF U MENTION : 1.THE CHAPTER 2.PAGE NUMBER 3. QUESTION (For others who are not using this book to have a feel of the problem) 4. DETAILED EXPLANATIONS(With shortcuts If any)
Hope this thread will be highly appreciated by those who are using this book and for others who are not using it.

unitary method is nothing but the method of carrying out a calculation to find the value of one unit to find the other one. you can solve the above question by this method too: formula:: {error/(true value - error value)} * 100 putting this in qs 50/(1000-50)*100 = required answer:)
See, CP is for 1000 gms , so Sp also we have to calculate for 1000 gms We know, SP of 950gms =x therefore, unitary method, SP of 1000 gms = x*1000/950... Now you can calculate the profit and tereby the profit%:)... Is the answer correct? Any problem, get back to me! :)
hey regarding problem 31. I am not very sure. Just let me know if my ans is correct or not. This is the approach which I followed.
Profit of A first time = Rs. 1500. SP of A =11500 B sells at 15% loss. CP of B=11500 SP of B = 11500 * .85 = 9775. CP of A =9775. Therefore profit made by A in the second transaction = (10000 -9775) = 225 Total profit = 1500+225 =1725 profit % = (1725/10000)*100 =17.25%

for QS 24: ANSHER SHOULD BE 18.75% sol; let the list price be x. so the retailer's cost price is 0.8x and he sold at 0.95x so % profit = {0.15x/0.80x}*100 =18.75%

could you plz help me with this ??? " SP 0f 1000 gms = x * 1000/950 profit = 50 *x /950 % profit = 5 5/19% "

Let the list price be 'a' CP(retailer) = SP (wholeseller) = a x 0.8 SP(retailer) = a x 0.95 = 38 therefore, a = 40 SP (retailer) = 38 and CP (retailer) = 40 x 0.8 =32 Profit for retailer = 38 - 32 = 6 so option C) is the answer
Time taken by Shramjivi=320 min Time taken by Magadh=288 min Let total distance= D so, speed of shramjivi Vs=D/320 speed of magadh Vm=D/288 Magadh starts 22 min before Shramjivi. So, distance covered by magadh in this duration = 22*D/288 Now let after 't' min both the trains ...
Moderate problem of Time,Distance ,Speed Q(2 Shramjeevi Express leaves Patna for New Delhi at 10:10 am and reaches New Delhi at 3:30 p.m. Magadh Express leaves New Delhi at 9:48 a.m. and reaches Patna at 2:36 p.m.If routes of both the trains are the same, then at what time will the trains meet each other? (a) 12:52 p.m. (b) 1:12p.m. (c) 1:32 p.m. (d) none of these.. plzzz help:banghead::banghead:
Time taken by Shramjivi=320 min Time taken by Magadh=288 min Let total distance= D
so, speed of shramjivi Vs=D/320 speed of magadh Vm=D/288
Magadh starts 22 min before Shramjivi. So, distance covered by magadh in this duration = 22*D/288
Now let after 't' min both the trains meet. so distance covered by both the trains in 't' min plus distance covered by magadh in previous 22 min will be equal to 'D'.
mathematically, t + 22 = D from here, t=140
Thus after 2 hours and 20 min (after 10:10 AM) both the trains will meet i.e. at 12:30 pm.
actually i guess i did a mistake in step: 9.48 am + 2hrs 42 mins -> 12.54 am it shud b 12.30 am so ur approach is also right. do u hav the actual answer of this question?
distance left = (133/3) therefore time when they will meet = (133/(3*(10+9))) where 10+9 = relative speed they will meet after 2 hrs 20 mins after shramjivi starts off therefore at 12:30 10:10 + 2hrs 20 mins...Am I correct plzz tell

The circumference of circle is 22 units speeds A = 4 units/min B = 7 units/min so, if A travels x units before meeting, (x/4) = (22-x)/7 x = 8 so they will meet after 2mins, and rest for half min now there speeds get doubled, so now they will meet at hal...
Two persons A and B are standing diametrically opposite on a circular track of radius 3.5 units. They start running in an opposite direction on the circular track with speeds 4 units/min and 7 units/min resp. on meetin each other they take rest of half minute and start running with twice the orginal speed. In five min, how many times will they take rest together?
(a) 6 times (b) 7 times (c) 10 times (d) None of these
I got answer as (a) 6 times , however, answer given in book is (d) none of these. Could any one provide right answer and solution to this problem?
The circumference of circle is 22 units
speeds A = 4 units/min B = 7 units/min
so, if A travels x units before meeting,
(x/4) = (22-x)/7 x = 8 so they will meet after 2mins, and rest for half min
now there speeds get doubled, so now they will meet at half the time reqd earlier. so they will meet after 1 min and again rest for half min then they will meet after 1/2 min and rest for half min
my take: Let the distance between Patna & New Delhi be 48 km (LCM of 16 and 24 ) the time taken by Shramjeevi to reach New Delhi : 5 hrs 20 mins the time taken by Magadh to reach Patna : 4 hrs 48 mins so speed of Shramjeevi = 48 / (5+(20/60)) = 9 km/hr speed of Magadh = 48 ...

just a bit of off topic: but i think Quantum cat by s.k.verma is a far better book compared to the other quant books available in the market. p.s.-my personal opinion having gone through both arun sharma and nishit sinha.
