Howver if the answer is 835, then 5+2=7
So we divid 5005/7=715.

For the 2 nd one answer is 835 I don't know how , it would b of great help if someone comes up with the explanation as well as the answer.

Thanks Jigar 4 solving the question I hav applied the concept of set /venn diagram concept to solve the problem and got the answer correct.

Thus,16 numbers in A which r divisible by both x and y

can b written in the set thoery language as XY (X intersection Y)

Similarly

50 numbers in A which r divisible by x but not by y can b written as XY`(X intersection Y complement)

34 numbers in A divisible by y but not by x

can b written as YX`

Now the application part

We know that X+Y = XY + XY`+YX`

As X+Y represents numbers which can both b divided by X and Y

So we get 16+50+34=50 (Answer for the first part. )


For the 2 nd part

ii. How many numbers in N r divisible by x

This part Jigar got the correct answer but my explanation is as follows

X = XY+XY`(The concept best understood using VEnn diagram)

So X = 50+16

Hence the amount of oxygen (excluding the one in water vapour) = 1 - x kgs
Also the amount of oxygen in water vapour = 16.66 % of x = x /6
Thus the total amount of oxygen = 1 - x + x/6 = 1 - 5x/6.
But total amount of oxygen = 0.7
Hence 1 - 5x/6 = 0.7
Hence x = 0.36

Q.2. 60% of the students of a class are boys and in an examination , 80% of the girls scored more than 40 marks( out of a maximum of 150 marks )
If 60% fo the total students scored more tahn 40 marks in the same examination , find the fraction of boys who score dmore than 40 marks or less.

Say, No of boys = 60, Hence No. of gals = 40.
No. of gals scoring more than 40 marks = 0.8 x 40 = 32.
Total No. of students who scored more than 40 marks = 0.6 x 100 = 60.
Hence the fraction of boys who scored more than 40 = (60 - 32)/60 = 28/60 = 7/15.

Posting a few questions on Percentages where I face some detailed explanations are really needed.
Q.1. Fresh watermelon contains 90% water by weight whereas dry watermelon contains 20% water by weight . What is the weight of dry watermelon obtained from 20 kgs of fresh watermelon?

( Really can't understand the problem and the solution problem , need a good explanatin with basic concept)

1) Total number of guavas = 3 + 5 = 8.
Since those are equally divided among the three, each one gets 2.66
Now Gopi contributes Rs 8 for 2.66 guavas, which means each guava costs
8/2.66 = Rs. 3
Kunal brings 3 guavas which cost 3 x 3 = Rs. 9. But each one's contribution (rather expense) is Rs 8. Hence, Kunal should receive Rs. 1.
Saurav brings 5 guavas which cost him = 5 x 3 = Rs.15. Hence he should receive 15 - 8 = Rs 7.

2) Let the length of the candle be 24 cms. The first candle burns in 6 hours, hence the rate of burning is 4 cms/hour. The second one burns in 4 hours, hence its rate of burning is 6 cms/hours.
According to the problem,

(24 - 4n)/(24 - 6n) = 2/1 where n = number of hours after which the first candle is twice the second one in length.
Solve the above equation to get n = 3 hours.

Candle1 (c1) will reduce by 4m after every hr, and candle2(c2) by 6m.

at 2pm: c1=16,c2=12
at 3pm: c1=12,c2=6
So answer is option A...

Q.30. Satish used 6 litres of oil paint to paint a map of India , 6m high .How many litres of oil paint will Santosh need for painting a proportionally scaled map of the height 18m?

(a) 54 (b) 18 (c) 30 (d) Can not be determined

For any figure, area is proportionate to side^2 (Similarity...for triangles, parallelogram...generalising...
So since proportion is 3, area wud be increased 9 times...so 6*9 = 54 litres reqd...so option A...

Now as saturn is nearer than mars then we can say that 1 day in mars is equivalent to 64/3sqrt(3) in saturn
So for calculation we can assume 1 year is consist of 366days
Then answer becomes 4490(approx)

Probably wat u can do is post the link for this thread on the Quant thread and let the ppl know tat u guys wud be discussing questions from Nishit Sinha on this dedicated thread... This wud atleast ensure tat regulars from tat thread are aware of the existence of this thread..meanwhile continue with ur discussions on this thread, if u reach a deadend wrt some problem, they u can choose to post it on the official quant thread to get the help of puys there...

I wish Nishit had given hints for all the questions in all levels - instead of being choosy about it - it so happens that he has solved the same questions that i know the answers for and not the more "complicated" ones ( where I am stumped ) ...

and oh, not to mention the irritating typos that confuse us even more !! :)

This thread is a great initiative! Personally I believe it should stay the way it is, and not be merged with the existing Quant thread because this would be a repository for 'only' Nishit Sinha questions and nothing else. Hence there wont be any confusion. Even in future, say a few years down the line, people can use this thread to get answers to questions discussed here previously. There is a similar thread for Arun Sharma's questions - that was very helpful as well. This year I did use Nishit Sinha for my preps and it certainly helped. I only wished I'd started it earlier. All the best!

It seems that no one is interested in this thread.

I had started this thread with this initiative, finding out that there is no thread / website for CAT preparation where we can openly discuss the ed by Nishit Sinha follwers while solving the book.

Please post ur queries and make this thread a succesful one.

I hope this thread with all your support can b really helpful during our CAT 2009 preparation and I myself will take some responsibility to make the thread a successful one.
