Group Discussion has evolved across these years and has become a very complex but Dissected methodology. It is a process wherein people who have been trained can become really stereotypical in terms of performances. This ensures that it becomes easy for the Panel to reject more number of people at this stage itself. For the GD processes under CAT, XAT and other exams (except MAHA-CET), it is the prime objective for the panel to excercise the Rejection formula correctly.

In earlier times, GD used to be topical and main concentration was on the content, attitude, and the body language. Content normally included awareness about the topic and attitude dealt with the tone used during the discussion. Today, things have changed.

GD has become more of an excercise of Group Dynamics rather than a discussion. It is a place wherein people are pushed into unknown territories (TOPICS) and then are expected to find a solution (Discussion). The competencies that are looked into are - Logical thinking, strategy (for solutions), listening skills, reactions and proactiveness, verbal communication, etc.

In this chapter, I will tell you about what the Bschools look into when they make you sit in a GD. It will consist of the Opening including the topic, the body of the GD and the chemistry that they want the students to have.

Opening a GD:
--------------

For many people, being the first person to talk in a GD is imperative. They feel that it will give them brownie points and that they will be perceived as Initiators. Nothing can be more foolish if someone without a solid plan in place attempts to start the GD. He/She will definitely be the first one to be booted out if the content of the Opening sentences is pathetic.

In case you are not too sure about the topic or are not good in opening a GD, WAIT for someone to start.

Normally, opening a GD involves these very important things:
1. Define the topic of the GD if there is a need to define it for others (clarity)
2. Set boundaries/parameters that you may feel will help the GD to be discussed without ambiguity.
3. In case you have a story/ incident/ experience for the topic, then start with that.
4. Creative GD will be started with your interpretation and the supporting thought process for the interpretation.

Now let us take a few examples and understand what is supposed to be done, and what is to be avoided:

Case 1:
TOPIC - "Rank the 10 most Significant things that happened in India in the last century"

Opener's tips -
1. Start by defining the key terms, which in this case are - Significant and Last century. Defining these two things would give a guiding light to the GD else everyone would come out with their own version of significance.
2. Set the tone by telling everyone the thumb rule - "bring on one point at a time and we will freeze it in terms of significance".
3. Remember - YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RANK ALL 10 IN THE STIPULATED TIME.

Many people in the above GD will start of by giving their Top 10. It may be on the basis of Date, seriousness, religion, politics, etc. This will cause chaos and the entire group will be eliminated.

Case 2:
TOPIC - "Pink Pyjamas flying high on the Red-Fort"

Opener's tips -
1. In case you don't get the essence of the topic, break down the topic into parts viz. pink pyjamas / flying high / on the Red fort. Pink pyjamas are worn by Ladies or gays and since the other part of the sentence doesn't suggest Gay prrotest, you can eliminate the second guess. Flying high indicates better status, better recognition, or independance. And lastly, "on the Red Fort" symbolizes something to do with the political perspective of India. So overall, the topic can be summed up as - the status or recognition of women in Indian Politics.
2. This kind of a topic can have different interpretation, and therefore please dont close yourself on someone else's idea.

This will be very rude and you will come across as someone who doesn't bother to listen.
3. As an Opener, get everyone to discuss and freeze on the meaning so that all are aware of what they will talk about.

Now, there are situations wherein you face two distinct problems:
1. You don't know the topic but the group knows it.
2. Neither you nor the group knows about the topic.

In the first scenario, it is okay to be quiet for sometime before entering to say something that will make sense. But what happens in the 2nd scenario? In situations like these, you have to the most daring thing one can do - ASK for a change in the Topic before anyone else does. The ignorance will be visible within 30 seconds of the panel asking you to Start. If you are the one asking for the Change in topic, chances are that you may be the only one selected.

Body of the GD & the Chemistry inside a discussion:
------------------------------------------------------

We all know that a normal GD would have a time-frame of 20-30 minutes. If there are 10 students sitting in the GD, that translates into 2-3 minutes per person. This is one of the biggest truths that GD takers forget. The ideal time for you to talk would be this duration and consider yourself lucky if someone doesn't speak and you get that extra time as a bonus.

A very big fact that many of us tend to overlook is that during the GD process, You will only have to ensure that you do your job perfectly. The other members would be either doing justice to their claims (by performing) or they would be help your cause (by being a Nuisance value).

So the learning is clear - "Concentrate on your role and your job as a team person. Forget the rest".

Most of the time, I have found myself telling the IIM aspirants that in case you are not an aggressive speaker, be the person who would regulate the entire GD within the group. This means that - in a situation wherein everyone (or some people) are giving in their solutions or thoughts, you should be busy noting their points and creating a lateral thinking output that will have a Strategy B or a Plan B ready for the group.

If you can manage to pitch in with this new angle to the GD, you have won the battle!!

Please resist in getting into the normal "my friend", "dear friend", "Sir" etc. Sentences can begin simply by saying - "I disagree with your point" or "I completely agree with him" in which case you use a complete hand movement to show to the group whom you are agreeing/disagreeing with.

Another important observation can be made at this juncture - Remember, the disagreement is with the Point of view or the Data that you might have provided. It is NOT personal. In GD topics that are a little emotional like "India should give away Kashmir to Pakistan", I have seen people getting involved personally which has ensured their rejections. You are there to
discuss and understand the probability to have a Plan of Action or a solution coming in from Matured person. Emotions are best left outside the GD room.

Most Business Schools ensure that they pick up those students who have some data on the topic or related discussions wherein the students can compliment their point of view or the stand they might take. It is like suggesting the changes expected in the New Budget - "Finance Minister should reduce the percentage of cess for young entrepreneurs". I am not happy with only that. Anyone can give me that. What's so special in you?? Always remember, the essence is not "What to do?" but actually "How
to do it?". Only then can the Institute understand your thought process. Only then the Institute can understand if you are creative and also support your creativity with sound logic.

I will wait for you puys to provide your comments/feedback/ discussions on the above, and will share some of the other things that I know by just being a part of the other side (B-Schools) for some years, and also by guiding & interacting with somewhere around 7000 B-School aspirants for the last 6 years.

Hello everyone
First of all I am really sorry for posting my query on this site.
My post is totally irrelevant. After hours and hours of research i couldn't find any relevant site for my post. So, finally i decided to go ahead with pagalguy for my super-pagal post.

My younger sister is preparing very very hard for her SUKHDEV COLLEGE OF BUSINESS STUDIES ENTRANCE EXAM.
She is doing really well in her mocks and is confident of clearing the entrance exam.
Her main problem is PERSONAL INTERVIEW.
She had SCIENCE in class 11th and 12th. Now, she doesn't have a very strong answer to the question-why a transition from SCIENCE TO MANAGEMENT(BBS) ?
Considering you all are experts in tackling questions, could you please give your inputs/answers to this questions?

Please suggest a couple of sites for the same too.

The answer is related to anyone who is choosing to go through an MBA program (2 yrs) after (say) - BSc, Engineering, MBBS, etc.

The relevancy is not in terms of the background as it will be to the future objectives of the student. k-12 education is a platform on which any UG degree can be taken up, but the main question is how one can relate this choice of BBS to her objectives in life. What would she do with this degree? Why is it challenging for her? What are her expectations? How does she intend to use the learning and its value later in life?

If she is asked by the panel during the PI abt how relevant her background:program is, then she can choose to define it w.r.t the objectives that she has in Life and how this program makes sense for all that.

hello puys,,,,thanks for replying my earlier queries,,,,it really did helped me...
i am facing one more problem,,, after getting rejects in GD/PI from both IIFT and SCMHRD ,, i am a bit shattered regarding my GD/PI capabilities...

i have always had good communication skills and infact at all my workplaces i am known for this particular skill (trained my fellow peers for PI and GD's) .however after these rejects,, have lost confidence... more than that,,,i am not able to understand in which area i should work so as to improve my chances... my interviews were good and i was expecting sure conversions.. my all friends and trainers are surprised that i could not convert my calls...

i think i have a wrong perception of what a good interview is.. .

how should i tackle this?? because of these GD/PI debacles,,, m not feeling encouraged to work hard again for written stages of MBA exams...

what are all the factors that the pannel considers???what should i do to avoid rejection next time?? all these questions are haunting me day and night... because of these rejections,, i am forced to join a job at accenture which i never wanted to do ( coz of my mba fixation )..

and does having work ex in IT firm really help??? i know its stupid to ask this,,, but m having a lots of confusions,, i am not able to grapple how to tackle the things that are going against my candidature

Dont be disheartened by rejects. although one might be highly accredited with something but sometimes we fail to identify certain shortcomings as you yourself realize. Although its fairly possible that you lost out on a convert because of your cumulative score rather than just the GD or the PI.
Nonetheless i'd suggest that you try out GDs with those that you consider good than those who consider you good, 2 reasons: better exposure, better feedback.
I'd also say that join some decent GDPI prep for next season. they provide a good platform for learning among other call getters and help clear all basics for GDs and PIs which would help you fine tune your skills.
But do keep your self well read especially before calls, i agree that in your interview or GD, what you read may not feature prominently but it keeps your confidence high and they do obviously look for content apart from a certain level of communication skill which you already possess.
All the best and do not be disheartened.

The reason for drop in XII is that in between of session we have to shift our house and our new house was being constructed...we stayed in a 1bhk for around 6 months..and i had to devote my time to other activities

for B.E. -- Though i stood among top 15/70 of class and had good EC--though in final year i had approx 70%-- dont know how to cover this thing

and finally after 45 months of work ex-- I am not working for past 2.5 yrs --prepairing for IAS( with partial success )--Do suggest how to cover this thing or should simple plain speaking will do.

Q-- Doesn't this show that i have a wandering attitude?

Having read your post, I found you very much similar to me. I've my profile like the following :

(1) X - 86.4% (West Bengal State Board) - year 2001
(2) XII - 77.8% (West Bengal State Board) - year 2003
(3) I took admission in Presidency College with Zoology Hons. - in 2003

(Left it after few months, and started taking rigorous preparation for Joint Entrance Medical, and was almost sure that I wouldn't be anything else but a doctor only. My parents got fumious at my decision because Presidency is the most reputed College in our state).

In 2004 Joint Entrance Medical, I failed to qualify it. Fortunately, I sat for combined exam that year. And had no option left except pursuing Engineering. I could have returned back to Presidency, but then everyone else would consider my year-drop as a big failure, I was afraid of it! I severed every contact with my old friends. I got the biggest thrust in my life. I started doing my computer engineering studies devotedly. And my college rank was 3rd. among all four departments. (CSE - 60, ECE - 60, EE - 60, IT - 60). Addition in my stat :

(4) B.Tech. - 88.6 SGPA (West Bengal University of Technology) - year 2008

During campus recruitment session, I got selected in the first company that came to recruit in our college, that was Wipro Technologies. And I was very enthusiastic to join, and was counting the days after 4th year. Then all on a sudden recession hit the market in last-phase of 2008. I got a jerk again. My parents told me to focus on Govt. jobs. Though I was planning then for higher studies, but I couldn't disregard their views, since I already faced the consequence before. I started applying for all Govt. jobs. Parallelly, started preparing for GATE exams. I knew it beforehand that my family has money constraints and MBA wasn't feasible for me at that point of time. Well, I sat for 2009 GATE exam, got 94.62%ile with a 2251 AIR which wasn't good enough to get a seat in any good NIT. In the meantime, I got a job in a PSU as an IT-Officer! Yes, finally I made an entry! I also got a posting in the Head Office which is situated in my hometown. I enrolled for a part-time M.Tech. in Jadavpur University, which is quite a reputed technical university in our state. I was pursuing well. First sem went well. After that, I analysed and found, what's the fruit that I'd be having after such a struggle of handling a full-time job and a part-time course like this! This part-time course won't open any new avenue in front of me! That course was quite low-profile, and I wanted something big in my life. However, in 2nd sem, I had long pause since my job required me to be in Pune for two months or so. After returning back, I found everything was put in a mayhem. I appeared for the 2nd sem, but later discontinued. My parents never bothered about it, since I already have spent in the PSU for past 1.6 years.. Addition in my profile:

(5) M.Tech. part-time - discontinued after 1st. yr. (Jadavpur University)

After that, I started feeling that my current job-profile doesn't really meets technical skills that much. And being in a PSU, I find quite ample of spare time to invest in a good purpose, and in past 1.8 years, I've made some impressive bank-balance too! Though it's not enough to do MBA, still I can afford it jointly with an edu-loan. I started preparing for CAT and all other related exams from this year. Let's see what happens! Fingers crossed.. Does my profile reveal my wandering nature? Everyone calls me fickle-minded, still I've my own reasons behind every decision I took. I went by my own firm decisions, I never got influenced by someone else. And I don't have any regret because whenever I made any choice, I knew that I had to face both the pros & cons related to it. So go on with your life and gather as many experiences as you can, because it's the only life we all have

While participating in some of the MOCK GDs, I found that, when a person stops with his point, two more than two people start at a time. hello sir,
I need your help for my interview preparation.
I am gonna face interview for specialist officer (textile) in pnb bank. Question which frightened me most is "tell me about yourself". I am not able to decide from where to start with?
I am working in Cotton yarn spinning unit as Asst. (maintenance).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:-
Preparing & Planning the Maintenance schedule & Activities
Giving Instructions to Department head fitter for Setting & Cleaning activities
Co ordinate with Quality control & Production Departments
Minimize Material consumption & Maintenance cost
reducing the Power & Energy Consumption

NATURE:- I am cool ,optimistic and shy but loud with my close friends. During the hectic working environment of heat and humidity,i try to keep myself calm. I feel myself logical in my instant thoughts. I don't like politics. Sometimes i find myself a bit introvert

HOBBIES AND EXTRA CURRICULAR:-I like net surfing, writing blog and diary,collecting quotes, watching meaningful movies, finding new and amazing softwares to increase efficiency. I am interested in badminton but don't know much about the happenings around except playing it with my friends. My extra curricular has not been very good except participating in couple of events. In one of which i won the first prize for best power point presentation on "industrial problem solution".

BETWEEN FRIENDS:-My friends call me "virus" because i am experimental in nature while working on PC, so due to my experiments few of my friend's PC got infected. Sometimes they call me witty because during longs friendly discussions I speaks on the turning points only.

MY BELIEFS:- I believe that we should use the technology in its most optimized form to improve our day to day work efficiency. I don't know the answer to every question but i know how to find the answer.

I don't like textile much so I can handle very basic questions in interview. I almost forget everything about textile during last 18 months.

This is all about me, plz help to to get it in order and concise form.

I am confused what to tell, what not to tell.
From where should i start with my answer?

Also, please review every sentence you write in your essay or anywhere else during the interview/GD process - as there are too many grammatical and spelling errors.

he was asked statistics of players, scores of matches, questions on key moments in matches and these were matches going back at least 6-7 years......my hobbies were F1 and the automotive industry (especially cars), so i prepped on everything related to them...all stats going back to the time F1 s...

When a panelist asks you to introduce yourself or to tell them about yourself, always tell them something that is not included in your resume and which will add weight. one of the primary reasons they ask you the same is so that they can go through ur resume and ur file.

in your answer, mentioning ur age, or the fact that u r the eldest and only son from a family of 5 (in my opinion) would not carry any weight. however, the opposite might be true for girls coming from the "underdeveloped" parts of india like UP, Bihar, MP, etc. similarly, the college u did ur graduation from and the fact that you got placed in CTS are not very helpful.

however, the point that you ditched CTS to join a core company will give a lot of weight (shows courage to not follow the herd and initiative to go out and search for job on ur own). talk about the project like u have done. when you mentioned ur strengths, it wud be better if u corroborated them with an example or two.

the last two points are bound to attract questions and most probably in detail - about technologies, about brands, about what goes into a vehicle manufacturing plant, the processes involved, etc. even if u dont know the manufacturing process in detail, u shud have an idea since u r saying it is ur goal in life.

also when u say something is ur hobby, be prepared to be quizzed in detail about it. a classmate of mine when he said his hobby was cricket was asked obscure statistics in his interviews. :)

My name is shivam Tiwari 23 years of age,the eldest & only son in the family of 5. My home town is ujjain.I have done schooling from my home town. I obtained bachelors of engineering degree from OIST bhopal. In the 3rd year of my engineering i got selected by CTS during a campus recruitment program.

My final year engg. project was first of its kind in India. For the same project I was interviewed by 9 National news channels & 4 National news paper. My name is enlisted in India Book of records.

After completing my engg. I drop my idea of joining CTS & started looking job in my core area. On 6 august 2009 I got selected in an open interview conducted by RTSPL & since from then i am serving the same.

My hobbies are playing cricket & sketching Cartoons.

My strength are My leadership quality & analytical skills.

My ultimate goal is to launch my own vehicle brand.

My area of interest is Latest innovations in Automobile.
