Whooah... Was just going through the threads and came across this thread... Puys if you don't mind, I would like to share something about how to crack the Verbal section (section-2) of CAT from my personal experience last year....
The single most important thing that helped me crack the verbal section was READING. I have been an avid reader since childhood and during my CAT year, I read a lot of good things. Guys read anything - newspapers, magazines, editorials, books - anything where you get good quality english. Spend at least 1-2 hours daily to read .... trust me it will help you much much much more than mugging word-lists or practicing questions or learning rules of grammar, etc... I will for your benefit, list out the gains you can obtain from reading more..
1.) Your speed and concentration for reading will increase helping you out a lot in RCs and Reasoning questions. And there are around 9 RC questions and 1-2 CR questions. Fast reading helps a lot in here...
2.) Good Reading practice makes you capable of connecting ideas between sentences and paragraphs... It will take some time but with enough practice, you will be able to make the connection between ideas quite easily and understanding complex articles will slowly become easy. Now the ability to connect ideas between sentences helps in all aspects of VA - RCs where you have to infer from the RC, Parajumbles and Paracompletion where obviously you need to connect the ideas properly and Reasoning questions where also you need to understand the idea behind the paragraph and the question.
3.) Even if you are not good with grammar and dont know its rules, enough reading will help you recognise the grammatically incorrect sentences or parts of it. With reading, you will form a habit of reading correct sentences. So whenever you come across an incorrect sentence, you will know its incorrect even though you wont know what the error is. Who cares what the error is, knowing the incorrect sentence will help you answer the Grammar questions in CAT!!
4.) While reading you will come across many words that you wont know the meanings of. If you have enough time, you can find out the meanings of these words and remember them. If you dont have enough time, then there will be some words that despite not knowing the meaning, won't hinder you in understanding the sentence. Ignore these words as you can guess their meaning pretty accurately from the sentence itself. Look up only those words without knowing the meaning of which, the sentence itself is not clear. This will substantially save your time.
5.) Reading will help you understand the different usages of many familiar and unfamiliar words which will come in very handy in SCs.
So, in short, if you just read and don't do much else for VA (apart from giving mock CATs) you will have a more than decent score in VA. But if you do everything else and don't read, you need to be very very lucky to get a decent score in Verbal.
That's all for the gyaan... Its free and you can take it up if you want

PS: Give and analyse mock CATs very very very seriously. They are the ticket to a good score.
