Disclaimer: This thread is based on the assumption that CAT will continue with the pattern that it introduced in 2011
i.e. Section I - QA + DI
Section II - VA + LR
Rationale for the thread ( What this thread will provide): Why have a separate thread for this when there already exist threads separately for different topics of VA and LR?
1. To provide answers to queries related to the VA section ( RC + VA) and LR problems that aspirants may come across.A forum for discussion on all difficult questions from VA + LR.
2. To provide a stucture for students to prepare for the VA + LR section prep.
3. To provide tips, tricks, short cuts, reference resources, practice materials etc. to ace this section

I had given an illustrative type of each problem in the previous post ( professors, socks) Broadly speaking AR will require you to play around with data while puzzles expect you to decipher situations.
Where do you start learning words? Not by memorising them ... rather by internalising them.. How does a baby learn words?? Not by going to KG and memorising a word list!! It experiences a lot of the words - Mamma Papa Water..in its native language and reels them in in In a similar ma...
As you have divide LR into 1) Analytical Reasoning 2) Puzzles Can we classify the type of problems that come under each of them so that we dont miss it during preparation?
For the LR section ( 10 Qs out of 30) you will find 2 types of questions -
1) Analytical Reasoning Qs - 4 profs teaching, 4 diff subjects , on 4 diff days of the week - arrangement of table etc.., Switches which need to be pressed in a particular sequence etc. You can expect 1-2 sets like these. Total of 6-7 questions. You can practice from an AR guide book / Mocks of any major Insti will serve the purpose as well.
2) Puzzles - You will find one-off puzzle questions. 3-4 of them in the paper Example from CAT 1999 - Three bags contain blue socks, red socks and a mix of red and blue socks (not repectively) . the bags have all been mislabelled. Take out one sock from any one bag of your choice and correctly label all the socks. Refer to puzzles of Martin Gardner/ George Summers for these types of problems
You should not ignore CR questions . Keep it as an element of your VA prep.

Task : To crack the English section of the CAT Method: If you are going to crack the English section it will depend on how friendly you are with words. ( Vocabulary) . Next you are going to use these words as per certain rules to form sentences. ( Grammar) V + G = RC ( also Reasoning)

The mistake that most CAT preppers make while preparing for CAT English is to think of it in terms of sections. I will do words. I will not do grammar. Or I will do RC I will not do words and so on.
Whereas - Actually You have no choice but to start at the basics - start at the basics of the language - start with how the language developed - how words formed.. how they began to be used in sentences .. and finally how those sentences were grouped into paragraphs ... and finally how those paras can be used for logic and reasoning and comprehension
Here in Kolkata - I find that any of the Arihant Publications will do for basics. Then it's a matter of practising more and more Mocks. Yes LR formed approx 10/30 questions in Section II. Check out Flipkart for Martin Gardner CR questions were variable. Occurring in some slots and not oc...

I want to improve my LR skills. But I find that the question types in guides available in market are usually different from question asked in cat 2011. I want to build concepts ,strategy and practise cat 2011 type questions. Can anyone suggest any books? Also is CR part of cat now? Did anyone get any CR questions like strengthening , weakening, last sentence of the para, boldface questions, assumption etc in cat 2011? If yes how many questions? Should we prep for it or is it a waste of time?
