Well, if you want to switch from IT, then it depends on which field are you interested in ? Does Marketing is exciting for you or your interest lies in Finance ? If you are not sure, you can explore these subjects during your 1st year and then decide on the specialization.

Depending on your choice, you can later on switch the your industry. But be mindful, you'll have to convince the Companies during your placement that why you are fit to join the company especially coming from a IT background.

Until and unless they ( companies ) see that drive in you for a change of industry, they won't select you.

To finally answer your question:
1. Corporate Banking
2. Investment Banking
3. Private Equity
4. Marketing - Depends on the company that you are interested in
5. Energy - Again depends on the companies that coming in
6. Consulting - Deloitte , KPMG, Bain ( not sure if they come to IIM B ) etc.

Basically, it depends on which industry or function excites you. Your Internship can also help you in deciding on a particular industry or function.

1) Yes, would be comfortable in doing a small amount of technical work

In today’s multicultural multi-faceted world of business, it’s essential for an individual to understand the essence of management at least in relative terms. The world has become so complex with time thatin absence of management it might not function at all. ‘Management’ is the soul of every business.

When discussing on business, we need to go back into the pages of history and look at the waytransaction was done in the medieval ages. Only the nature of doing business has changed. Doing business,or possessing the qualities of a businessman is an inborn skill. It was present even when our ancestors had laid down the bases of business by moving from hunter-gatherer to agricultural mode of survival, albeit on a smaller scale.

Nevertheless, the scenariohas changed with globalization and the increasing network of goods and services around us. With industrialization bringing the entire world under one network, the need for ‘managing’ such a huge and multidimensional world is felt.And, this can’t be done without proper guidance or training.With the need of upcoming markets and trends, ‘management education’ has spread all over the world and is helping the aspirant entrepreneur, or professionals, to develop their knowledge and skills as per expectations.

The education system in India is limited to theoretical knowledge which is confined to just some degrees. But ‘management education’ gives practical embossing over the theoretical approach. This gives a complete understanding of the activities of business, and the role required to be played by individuals at a later stage. It is not that business cannot be run without management education. But, with increasing competitiveness all over the world upcoming professionals need to possess the required qualities - the zest to innovate constantly and apply logical and analytical thinking. If properly inducted, ‘management education’ can add all these qualities to an individual’s personality.

So, it can be derived that business education is required to managework in office. Both “Management” and “Business”go hand in hand, and contribute to the growth of business on a global scale.

abhimukh19 These are exceptional cases buddy
1) Due to the college he joined
2) Opportunities he/she could not convert during placement
3) Luck factor , where either due to his/her profile or the competition around he was left behind ..
4) He/she was a free rider during college
Most of the times its 2 or 4 .. people are left behind do deserve so .. but unfortunately they blame market conditions or colleges

RPI_Lally Though a bad job market has an effect on job placements, but in the end it depends on the fireworks that you have in your kit bag. Sometimes just an MBA degree is not enough and you got to accumulate something extra. If you know your interests then you got to demonstrate that by doing stuff in that direction. And that comes when you really strive in the way you see your future. Hope this helps...

nayas @Mithu28 Brand matters a lot but only at an entry level. Once you get in, its the kind of work you do that matters more. IIM is a big brand but then you can't compare the new IIM's like IIMS, or the 6 new IIM's with the likes of FMS, NITIE or JBIMS. FMS, NITIE and JB have a big alum base which help them get better placements year after year. Having said so there are some jobs for which brand is sacrosanct For example, if you want to get into top level strategy consulting, don't look beyond IIMABC or atmost XL and L. However such instances are rare.
In a nutshell it depends on you and the kind of career you want to have in long term. Most of the colleges in PG Rankings top 15 will get you there if you are good.

nihit You can get different profile(Role) but that would be linked to HR only... for example... Compensation & Benefit, Recruitment, Succession Planning, etc. Yes you can always pursue an executive MBA in a different specialization... but then if you plan to change the profile by that....you may be treated as fresher because at that time you will not be having an exposure of that particular profile.

ajaygovindg Firstly, I'm not sure why you would do that. When you have so many forums and avenues to know how exactly any particular specialization and associated job profiles may be, why would you risk your career by actually getting into it to know it better (assuming that's your objective)? You can very well do a dual specialization, as almost all leading B-Schools have it like that now, considering the dynamic job market conditions. And as @nihit has rightly said you'll be considered a fresher when you look to switch. So I'm wondering why you would want to do something like that. If its because you're interested in jobs in 2 areas then you may want to read more, speak with people and find out which suits you better.

There is no telecom management profile in top MBA colleges as far as i know . It is a business course where u get to understand every aspect of Business.Finance is a specialisation , banking is an Industry. Taking finance as a specialisation doesnt mean u can enter the banking industry alone.
