heres my 2 cents......now that so many ppl have joined PG...the utility of 'Today's Birthdays' has lost utility and one cant search for bdays of people who are regulars here...

Um... good suggestion. What we can do is try to put up b'days of people who are active on PG. Say you havent been active on PG for 30 days, then the b'day wont show up..

This problem is there in most threads(that the links are not exactly related) . Also the number of related threads has to be increased(Its only 2 currently as per my knowledge.

I got a small suggestion for you. Well there are so many threads here that many threads get lost. So is it possible for you to show related threads somewhere.

For example : There's a thread for Football, one for FIFA WC 2006 and one for the best Football team ever and few others. So what I suggest is that while viewing any of the above please make provision to have links to the other related threads somewhere on the site.

I dont know how much my suggestion is practically feasible but still a small contribution to improve PG.

1. The list of Forums should be on the front page as well... with an expansion link to open into the subforums.
Some other suggestions:
2. Auto Lock of threads that have not been accessed for a while, especially in the Exam & Prep sections. n00bs ping threads that need not happen, that's why.
3. If the above is not possible, the date should be better displayed.

New Version I have never seen any version other than the current one. So looking forward to a new PG avatar :)

Anyway this one is about the SB. As every non-office SB user must have noticed ,SB eats up a lot of MB's And for users like me who have a monthly data limit, it becomes difficult to access SB for a long period of time.

Can anything can be done to make SB more sleek (if that is the word) so that it becomes a little easy on the data consumption?

New Version will look similar .. except with a bunch of more features .. We expect the version to go beta in a month and go live in under 2 months

I would let it be that way. GMAT experiences are unique for each person and also allows people to learn from individual experiences. So for now, we let them have individual threads

that was just one point and at the same time, one possibility. What i meant was, that u can't restrict any newbie like that. We were all newbies once. Think from a newbie's mind set... he joins a forum , expecting he would get help. He would share his ideas. If at the first instance he sees the message that he isn't allowed to open a new thread, then he would get a wrong image in his mind about PG.

Now instead of this, u send an automated message to every newbie who joins the forum welcoming him to PG and then telling clearly the rules of posting. This would not only make him feel welcomed by the admin and the authority, it would also inform him the correct way to browse through the forum.

Many newbies don't know what/how to go about it and our single post can guide them to do the requisite. That's all is my take on this discussion.

Is there any way that the date & time of the post be better placed, or emphasised upon?

I just came upon a two year old thread that was bumped last week. IT was named http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/b-school-student-discussions/3419-sibm-class-of-2006-a.html last post date May 2004.

Looking at the date in the title (Actually the finishing date; but confused as start date), some n00b bumped it...

Perhaps it'd have helped if the date was better positioned: the first n00b would have realised the age of the post, and restricted posting.

Hello all,

I know this post will sound very weird as I have just completed my 10+2 (Maths Economics & Commerce with 67 % marks (overall and 90% marks in maths). At this critical juncture of my life I am little confused to decide about my future course of action (what stream to opt for in Graduation ) . I am very much clear about what my Medium-term goal ,and that is to do an MBA from IIM (soon after graduation).

As my percentage is low SRCC, DSE & ST.Stephens of the world are out of my reach. So I have to do my degree from other colleges & i.e. why I think the stream selection become all the more important.

My Brother {Ahmad Azeem (ahmadazeem777), who is member of this forum} advised me to post my queries at pagalguy as you ppl have are having the same aspiration that I have & that you are in the best position to guide me & share your experiences . So Didis & Bhaiyas please advise me on which stream to select. I am open to B.Com & B.SC (maths is a must here); the ultimate aim is to maximize the chances of getting into IIMs.

1) B.com :- As my brother completed his B.com in 2000 along with ACS he says B.com is a cake walk and you need to do something extra with it but I dont want to go for course like CS or CA or CWA as it will take me at least 5 yrs to complete. So If you recommend me B.com then pl also suggest about the additional degree/ course I should pursue to build my candidature for IIMs (how about CFA etc )


2) B.SC :- If I take BSc then would be taking Maths for sure but I am not sure other sbjects like stats etc will add real value. Here in Hyderabad we dont have fundoo combinations like Maths & economics for BSC. So If your advise is to g in for BSC (maths, computer, stastics) (pl keep my % in mind) & where I could find such a combination (I am willing to move to relocate myself in north India also). Please do send the course name & college address?

I have already got admission offers from the better known colleges In hyderabad for B.com Computer & B.com (hons). But I want to take your expert advice.

Didis & Bhaiyas pls reply at the earliest As I have to make this VERY VERY IMPORTANT DECESION for my Career at the earliest.

There are people who just want chit-chat or fun, or probably some who want to debate on life-touching topics. Some poitns i like to make

1) At one point of time , spamming was necessary wheen there was less activity . But now its just used as an excuse to get pc++ ( more post count ) ... i have seen many members spamming just to be in the exclusive thread . Im sure the mods n PG are aware of this ...

You dont built reputations with 1500 + posts ... its about quality of posts & what you contribute.

2) We have seen a great decrease of Old users who contributed a lot to this place. They have either moved on from this place or from what i got from discussing from some of em is - There are very less relative threads to post on nowdays ... maybe PG needs new areas to look on for keeping us oldies here :)

On the lines like ...
Business Ideas , New setups , Entrepreneusrship , Work & On Job Discussions where people can share their knowledge about their fields... both pre b schoolers & post B schoolers

And every single time, we haven't been able to define that compelling reason which would justify under-mining the newbies' intelligence. All of us were newbies at one point in time. And frankly, each discussion forum has its own set of underlying culture that defines it. That is a curve which an member goes thro. But yes, like I said, trying to force it on people is something that goes against the spirit of a community. Instead, rather than waiting for the mods to come in and intervene, junta should take on themselves and guide the newbies around. Community moderation, which is inclusive, is a way forward than uni-lateral strictures...

As regards one-liners, yes, they are being increasingly seen, but like ppl have pointed out, there's a pretty thick line that divides chat rooms and discussion forums. Just coz we don't really come down hard on one-liner spams these days doesn't mean you can go all over town doing it

I second Sahil... chit chats are meant to be for fun and doesn't have to actually pour gyaan... all the time. Even the chit chat lines say the same..

Chit - Chat Relax , unwind and make friends. Talk about anything you wish. Its time to lay back and relax. Small talk - Chit Chat. You don't even have to make sense.

Everything is good, as long as it is relaxing...

and i remember very correctly, the defn of "spam" given by our very own Rohit Awasthi...

Spam - Any post with no relevance to the matter under discussion. Now, offcourse, it is a personal choice, whether u wanna be 'in' or 'out'..

p.s. ILLUMINATUS i dun think curbing the freedom of speech is the right way to go. That'll harm PG a lot. We can think of far better ways to do that..

Most n00bs who open such new threads are desperate for info. There are some who are there for useless matters, and thus display their (im)maturity. But one cannot generalise that all n00bs will be like that. Remember, even you were a n00b once. So was I.

We cannot say that the whole basket will be rotten just because one mango was rotten... in the same manner, we cannot say that the whole basket will be sweet because one mango is sweet... Of course, keep the rotten mango in the basket and the whole basket will rot sooner or later. I hope you get the picture.

Try to see this: Any suggestion, no matter for how much ever good of the forum, should not incorporate any kind of restrictions for any type of member, especially new members. That is against the basic funda of the forum: that of being able to express yourself freely, in bounds of the topic uder discussion. That is all.

What we are saying here is that we curtail the n00b's right to free speech because we think that the n00b is not smart enough. That's a double jhatka. One, we hold him from his fundamental right to speak freely. Two, we do that because we think he's not smart enough.

See... its not that easy. We get close to a 1000 posts per day (PG - that's the number you said, right?) And of these, only a few are by n00bs. We are among the very few forums that have strong self moderation. It makes a lot of admin sense if n00b's are not allowed to create new threads... I myself requested that some posts ago. However, by doing that, we may actually insult the intelligence of the n00b... many of whom are desperate for info when they join.

One aspect of this is that whenever such a n00b thread comes into action, it becomes a spammer's paradise. That, unfortunately, cannot be helped unless the spammers (and they know who they are) follow self moderation and hold themselves from posting in every new thread that opens up.

And if we actually curtail a n00b from opening a new thread, by saying that s/he must first have that many posts in one's account, then only can they start a new thread... in a way, isn't that an invitation to start spamming? The n00b will rush to finish that many posts ASAP, by hook or crook...

Everything has two sides, just like a coin...

Ah well, i talked to Govi yesterday, letting him know of a suggestion i feel should be implemented:

See we have a problem that people, esp newbies post their email addresses and then mods have to do this extra work of warning them and editing their post. If the php guy (imzeeshan, i suppose) can implement a small code in the forum, wherein, a pop-up display message (a small flash window which appears and then disappers after a few secs) can come up, during posting, when a person presses @ symbol

This way, if someone tries to write xyz@xyz.com then, he/she would be warned that posting of email addresses is against the forum rulz.

actually its for the users good only , not to post his or her's email id.. but to have a pop whenever @ is pressed wont be that good an idea .. as if in a post u are replying to many different ppl , u normally use @

so the it guy has to work out .. something containing @ and .com together should be blocked ..

One very important suggestion to the admin...

Lock this particular forum in such a way that older threads can be posted to, like this one, but any member without mod rights cannot create a new thread here. These ones got created here:

use advanced search...or click on the "search" in my sign..u can refine the search this way..:)

was wondering if there is a better way to search for threads cuz i simply am not able to search using keywords from the search panel..almost get no result....maybe i missing the clue somewhere so would appreciate if i can be helped out on this...
for eg, if i want to search for threads which feature the topic reservation or quota, by simply typing in the word dosnt yield anything....
so how do i go about it?

Well i just recently enrolled for the newsletter and i get the "Quant question a day" mail on my subscribed mail id. just today i received a Quant Section test #2.
Can i get the Section test #1. It must have been mailed earlier but since i just recently subscribed here i wud want to know from where can i find that testpaper.
I find these questions really good and they help me a lot in clearing my basics.
so i wud request if anyone has the link/htmlpageof the test/any information where can i get the Quant Section testpaper #1 then please let me know on my mail id.
i cant track down replies to these posts as its very difficult findind the post,.
