While selecting the specialization, one has to be absolutely clear about his/her interest/attitude . As some of you already have pointed out i.e. if you are good with numbers and have a very hold of arithmetic calculations etc.. Finance is your domain, like wise, if you are a people person then HR is a good fit . If you like to travel , meet new people , visit new place and explore different culture and have the gift of words then you are meant for Marketing.

I think you are not alone who get bored after some years of constant coding work.I guess you will be aware of the fact that if you look at the IT industry today there is big pool of folks who share your thought process. If you really want to get to the management side, certainly you should give MBA a full try and I am sure you will enjoy doing things more from the strategic management perspective.

@prsreek firrst of all u neeed to grasp the fact that choosing specialization is a decision which is normally not made up in a matter of days / months .. its a sincere and deliberative act of making yourself prepared for a certain field which may even take .. say 1 / 2 years ..

for this u should -

converse with various pg guys actively ; ask yourself at least 10 times every day this question "shoud i go for this .. or waht if that .. or what if" / ask urself "whats that work which i will LOVE to do , no matter the less compensation (initially) .. no matter the work load .. etc etc /

Choosing a spcialisation is basically a "soul-searching" activity which should be spread over a period of time , rather than trying to make the decison on your impulses. The final decision must be a thourough one ,a planned one , a deciison which will make u work satisfactorily no matter what the situation be . Also , u shud take the help of your family members / relatives who are in the same field u aspire for .

In the end i would like to say "Choose your Specialization as you would choose your spouse"

Do Self-Introspection & Self-Questioning .The decision of chosoing a specialization should be a thorough one in terms of - logic , Feasibility , Personal Preferences & Areas of Inerest . It should also be backed by a market research - that is , explore the various verticals and working domains & the associated working people for the area you want to specialize in. Talking to an experienced professional who is in the area you aspire for or the area which you have as an option , may also be beneficial . On a personal level , you may exercise an activity. This activity involves writing down your short/long term financial and career progression goals and then compare these goals so as to make a synchronised relationhip between these and the area in which you want to specialize. Also , there are a lot of resources on the web which are ready to assist you as a mentor. In a nutshell , since it is YOU who has to finally and ultimately take the decision , therefore perform a self check and self review of all the choices you want to make , the areas which you are inclined to .. etc. Simply put , area of specialization is something which -

1. Should come to you "Nautraly"

2. You should be able to do that "area of specialization" work easily and happily , if every work was paid equal - THIS IS APTLY PUT FORWARD IN THE ABOVE REPLY .

I am currently working in the role of a Project Manager, in IT product vertical, with a total work experience of 8 years. I am very much inclined to go for an MBA now, as I feel that the current career path is dead slow and learning via experiences is not the most efficient route. After delving on various courses, I find MBA to be the right course for me since it provides the platform to learn about various pillars of organizations (marketing, operations, finance etc) along with real life case studies based on global experiences. Now, the next task in my hand is to select the right college to go for the degree. In my pursuit, I felt I should first get a feel of various MBA course streams and opt for a college/university best known for the same. After doing a brief study, I am not sure if I have developed a great passion/liking for a particular stream. But what I could concur is that:
1. Sales - Not keenly interested as I am a person who would like to believe strongly in the product being sold before trying to convince ppl to buy. If I do not, then I am very bad at it. I guess, this is not the ideal attitude for a sales chap.
2. Marketing and Strategy- Find it interesting as its strongly based on data and postulations/decisions are supported by facts.
3. Operations - Challenging. But being in IT industry for long enough, dont know if this is the right one for me.
4. Finance- No prior background. So will have to start afresh.

Would request your help in advising me the right stream and also correct my understanding, if I am going wrong anywhere.

I'm currently a student of comp. engg.(just going to start my 3rd year) So would it be beneficial for me to persue a systems MBA or a finance/marketing/operations MBA?What exactly is an operations MBA? Is it true that most of the things they teach in systems course is similar to that taught in BE Comp?
Also I'm planning to do an MBA immediately after my BE so obviously i will have zero work experience... will it cause any trouble?

I'm a student of Pune university, Maharashtra. It is said that the state level CET is going to be cancelled which will be replaced by CMAT (which will have -ve marking ) and will be acceptable nationwide. So will symbiosis will also be admitting students on CMAT basis?

What all should i prepare for? Which exams should i appear for(apart from CAT, CMAT, SNAP, CET?!)?which books should i use?

I wanted to make a career in mass comm...sadly couldnt...Now through specialization in marketing I want to be in the advertisement field or in the market research area...

You have good grades!! Go for marketing and you can get an option of getting into Advertising/sales/marketing/market research/ Market analyst!!!

You can opt for Mktng(Major) and IT(Minor)..
Marketing doesn't mean only Sales!! Marketing has various fields like Advertising, PR, Analyst, Market Research.. Look for colleges which has good placement record as well as good faculty...

Buddy,

Marketing has sales to small or large extent esp in the initial phase no matter which institute you do MBA from. And some sales should be done by every marketing guy for having a better understanding about the market,etc.

And after MBA in IT, you dont necessarily have to do programming... you can be invovled in the Business Analyst tasks, billing tasks, Client Handling, etc.

Finance is something I do not have much idea about as I personally am not very keen on it but it involves a lot of number crunching..

You can go through the curriculums of various specializations, plus the threads on PG (like why marketing?, why operations?) to know more about them and then decide what you are interested in before making a decision.

If you are not decided, then you can work for a year in the IT sector to know more about its work culture and then decide on MBA next year... Its better to be cautious rather than making a wrong decision.

I think you should go for advertising by choosing marketing... I believe that if we have the desire to do something, we will always be good at it because we will overcome our shortcomings through sheer hard work and determination. Even though you may be good at HR, you dont WANT to go in it. On the other hand you WANT to go into advertising and that desire will take you higher than most others in your field.

In my opinion, choose what you want to do and go for advertising
